Great Wall

Worth going if you’re hankering for spicy food cooked by Chinese people in Germany.
The place was easy to find from Burgmauer… the issue was the entrance was on the street below. The handwritten note indicating the new entrance was in German, which does not help this Asian American…
When I did find it, it was very small, but tastefully decorated in vaguely Asian décor. However, there was 3 flights to the restaurant, all of which was accessible by a small, tight spiral staircase. The staff all spoke Mandarin, German and some English.
The menu was in German and English, with pictures of the food. It was interesting to note that the meat and vegetable dishes were similarly priced. Is this because it’s hard to get other vegetables (beside cabbage)? Or is this frequented by vegetarians? Or both?
I opted for the dry noodles with sesame paste, beef with chili (3 peppers) and pu erh tea. The noodles and beef tasted very good together, although both were rather greasy. The other thing that bothered me was the use of pickled chili rather than the dried red Thai chili which would be easy to procure. The final grouse is the cost – the meal came close to 30 euros. All of which knocked the potential 3 star down to 2 star.
However, this may be the best Chinese food you can get in the area, as when I was there, there were a few Asian diners, most of whom spoke Mandarin.

The restaurant was easy to find just right next to the Cathedral.
We loved the food a lot and I found many of my favorite dishes on the menu. We wanted to order everything to be honest.
There is always speciality that you have to ask but most of the time the speciality is worth trying. The quality of the food was amazing. Would be happy to come back again.

Hallo, sie renovieren, am 25. oder so machen sie für zwei Wochen (?) zu.

My husband and I LOVE this restaurant! We have eaten here about a dozen times now and each time we return we love it more! The menu is high quality, authentic and delicious. They offer fantastic mapo tofu, lamb with cumin, roasted pork, hot pot (both Szechuan and Hunan style) just to name a few of our favorites.

Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und noch witzig dazu. Die Gerichte sind superlecker. Auch wenn diese eher im oberen Preissegment angesiedelt sind, sind sie es auf jeden Fall wert.
Die Wermutstropfen sind leider die Enge des Speisebereiches sowie die unangenehme Lautstärke.

Ausgefallene Gerichte, große Portionen, exotischer und authentischer kann man in Köln die chinesische Küche nicht erleben.

Outstanding meal. One of the most authentic Chinese menus we found in Köln. The water-​spinach and tea-​cooked pork belly were fantastic. Friendly, considerate, multi lingual staff. Great experience.

On a blistering rain i found this restaurant. The main door is full of awards and recognition prizes. So, i think … perfect location. I was so wrong. I didn’t have a reservation, I admit that. But the personnel is very rude and they prove a serious lack of education. They yell at me that no reservation, this is full and to wait outside … in heavy rain. They don’t allow me to wait inside. I left the location with a bitter taste in my mouth. This is a disgrace behavior and I think those guys are a shame for entire people of China. Perhaps food is awesome but ease avoid this place, attitude is terrible.

We got to know this place by the recommendation from one of our friend. The restaurant isn’t difficult to find, it actually just couple mins on foot from Kölner Dom. Well, and the name of the restaurant quite hard to miss.
The place isn’t so big, but quite cosy. Not a bad place to hang out with friends at all. I came here also friends, we all like it. The service is also quite friendly as well, even joke with us. The other I like is that they are quite efficient. We got our orders not so long right after we ordered and the place was full. The price is acceptable. For nice dinner is total alright.
So let’s talk about the food. Their menu just like the menu people can find in China. Everything with picture, that’s great, in this case, peoole will always know what they are having. Most of the food here are spicy, they list out how hot of each dish. They also got something no hot or no meats. I did enjoy the dish I ordered, although was a big spicy for me. It seem like all my friends also enjoyed their food. If you’re hungre for some Chinese food and around the tourist area. This could be a great choice.

Authentische chinesische Küche und die Tatsache, dass dieses Restaurant zu den Top 35 in Deutschland gehört waren der Grund, warum ich dort war.
Beim Betreten des Restaurants war ich zunächst etwas ernüchtert. Das Ambiente eines der Top-​Restaurants in Deutschland hatte ich mir anders vorgestellt. Aber, das Essen hat dann doch den entscheidenen Eindruck hinterlassen. Ich war zwar noch nie in China und kann daher nicht wirklich beurteilen, ob das Essen authentisch ist, aber, es schmeckte anders und besser als in den Chinarestaurants in denen ich bisher gewesen bin.
Also, ich wünsche den Chinesen, dass es in deren Heimat so gut schmeckt wie hier.

After many days traveling through Europe and having our fill of bread and cheese, we desperately needed rice. U C, koreans can go only so many days without eating rice. Our mind and body starts to shut down if we go too long sans rice. So we ate lunch at this szechuan restaurant.
The mapo tofu was not bad. But the soups were overly salted. Maybe too msg’ed. And the fried rice was nothing special. Also, the prices were kind of high.
If you are desperate to eat Asian cuisine (ie, rice), then I guess this place will do. But if you can hold out a few more days of eating bread and cheese, then you’ll find better Chinese/​Szechuan restaurant in your hometown.

Was möchtest Du essen? Entenzunge, Schweineblut oder Froschschenkel?
Wer die chinesische Küche im Original erleben möchte, sollte hier her kommen. Bestätigt wird die für mich «extravagante» Speisekarte durch den hohen Anteil chinesischer Restaurantbesucher.
Für mich ist das leider nichts, ich genieße lieber die traditionelle «deutsch/​chinesische» Küche. Es gibt auch ein paar klassischere Gerichte, die frisch zubereitet geschmeckt haben.
Die Bedienung war eher unfreundlich und nicht sehr professionell. Die Preise sind eher gehoben. Die Einrichtung ist eher nüchtern und lädt nicht besonders zum gemütlichen Verweilen ein.

Wunderbare Anlaufstelle für alle die, die den Einheitsfraß der europäisierten ‘chinesischen’ Küche leid sind. DIe Karte offenbart ungewöhnliches und exotisches, auf das man sich erst einlassen muss, aber der Abenteuermut lohnt sich. Schweinedarm klingt zunächst eklig, genau wie Froschschenkel, aber es schmeckt einfach sensationell.
Ich empfehle dieses Restaurant jedem.

Soll angeblich ein authentisches Chinesisches Restaurant sein und der erste Blick in die Speisekarte scheint das auch zu bestätigen. Ungewöhnliche Speisen wie Darm oder andere Innereien, aber auch klassische Fleisch und Fisch Gerichte auf der Karte. Inneneinrichtung minimalistisch chinesisch. Allerdings ist der Service sehr zurückhaltend, nach Getränke wurde erst nach 15 Minuten gefragt, als das erste Bier leer war gar nicht mehr. Die Vorspeise sauer scharfe Suppe war weder das eine, noch das andere, Frühlingsrolle dagegen war sehr gut. Meine Hauptspeise war Schweinefilet Peking Art, kaum gewürzt und bei Ankunft schon kalt, das andere war Peking Ente, sehr lecker, aber auch nur lauwarm… Während ich das schreibe hat immer noch keiner nach Getränken gefragt. Bin sehr enttäuscht!!! Kein gutes chinesisches Restaurant, nicht empfehlenswert!

I was there for a meal before going to the christmas markets. We had Ma Po Tofu, Chilli Crab, and a cold tofu dish. It was really good. My favourite was the Ma Po which had loads of szechuan pepper and chillis in and the flavour was out of this world. I would defintely eat here again.

I struggled between 3 to 4 stars… let me point it this way: this is the best authentic Chinese food (specifically Taiwanese food) that I’ve had in Germany! But why not 5 stars then? Because I’m comparing it to my standards of Chinese food, not just in Germany.
–Mapo tofu: spicy, good flavor, a bit on the runny and oily side.
–Pi Dan tofu: a simple dish that’d hard to mess up. Refreshing and light!
–Spiced chili crab: chunks of perfectly cooked crab, lightly deep fried then tossed in peppers, garlic and spices! tasty!
–Dan Dan mein: definitely good flavor but a major disappointment as they serve it more like a soup. It was oily and the noodles that were used were different than typically used.
Overall, this did remind me of real authentic chinese food… and I know for sure I will be back!

As vegans we weren’t interested in «Frogs’ legs à la Sichuan» or «Pig blood with prawns, squid and mushrooms» but found very authentic and tasty food non the less.
The restaurant offers a good range of vegetables and we shared «Water spinach with garlic» and «House special aubergine» which both were very tasty. As a starter we had the «Vegetable soup with tofu» which was also exceptionally good.

Das ist mit Abstand der beste chinese bei dem ich Je war, traditionelle Küche auf hohem Niveau zu fairen preisen.

Das Great Wall ist eines der besten China Restaurants die jemals besucht habe. Hier ist alles spitze, angefangen vom Lokal selber über die tollen gerichte bis hin zum sehr guten Personal. In diesem Restaurant fühlt man sich am richtigen Ort. Hier schmecken die Menue’s nicht nach ⁰⁸⁄₁₅ wie in vielen pseudo China Lokalen. Nur Schade das der weg hierher für uns etwas weit ist, so ca. 171 km !!! Aber deswegen ist dieses Lokal trotzdem sehr Empfehlenswert !!

We were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The menu looked incredibly authentic and the service was great. Food was reasonably priced. We will go back this locationw when the Chinese cravings return. For authentic Chinese food, absolutely recommended.

Wir waren durch Zufall im Great Wall. Die Speisekarte ist sehr umfangreich und geht weit über das eingedeutschte Chinaessen hinaus. Ich habe hier Sachen auf der Karte gefunden die ich so in Europa noch nie gesehen habe. Das war wohl eines der besten chinesischen Essen die ich je hatte. Wer also eine kleines Stück China in Deutschland sucht ist hier genau richtig. Etwas nachteilig ist wohl der Preis, der nicht ganz billig ist, aber angesichts der Qualität gerechtfertigt.

Got takeout here: hot and sour soup, spring roll, and dandan noodle. All pretty good, no complaints. They were very helpful and friendly even though I was ordering about 15 minutes prior to closing time. I will be back next time in Cologne. Interior was nicely decorated, but fairly small.

und ich bin bist jetzt auch immer zufrieden mit Speis und Trank.
Über das Mittagsbuffet kann ich nichts sagen bin bisher immer nur abends eingekehrt.
Das Essen überzeugt durch frische Zutaten und die Speisekarte hat wirklich einige Exoten (jedenfalls für uns Mitteleuropäer der heutigen Zeit) wie z.B. Schweineinnereien, Froschschenkel u.ä. zu bieten. Ich bevorzuge eher die Klassiker wie etwa Ente oder den Tintenfisch und muss sagen jedesmal lecker. Der Service ist freundlich und zuvorkommend, allerdings ist die Verständigung manchmal etwas schwierig, wofür ich einen Stern abziehe, da ich der Meinung bin das Menschen die im Service arbeiten auch soweit deutsch sprechen können um Informationen über die Speisekarte o.ä. Fragen auch beantworten zu können, was zum Glück nicht immer war.

Das all you can eat Mittagsbuffet ist nicht schlecht, aber man darf bei Speisen, die ständig warm gehalten werden müssen keine Highlights erwarten. Das Restaurant meist sehr voll. Reservieren lohnt sich.

Located one street over from the main train station, Great Wall. charges a reasonable € 7.99 for lunch if you sit in or € 3.99 for a takeaway box
There are 25 dishes covering soups to meat and vegetable savoury courses to starch fillers like rice and noodles. As with all buffets, hit it early and the food’s not bad. However, once it’s been sitting in food warmers for awhile, Chinese food tends to get a bit gloopy

Das Great Wall liegt zwar zentral in der Nähe des Dom, aber nicht an einem der Hauptlaufwege so das man es schon mal übersehen kann. Mich hat ein Freund darauf aufmerksam gemacht der in Singapur (!) angesprochen wurde mit «If you’re from Cologne you know the Great Wall?».
Das Restaurant ist über drei Etagen verteilt. Unten (Zugang über die Komödienstraße) gibt es das Buffet was sich nicht groß von den anderen Buffet-​Chinesen unterscheidet, außer das kein Glutamat verwendet wird. Spannend wird es in den anderen zwei, dort waren wir jedes Mal Mittags die einzigen «Langnasen», was wir ganz lustig fanden.
Ab der mittleren Etage (auch zu erreichen über die Straße Burgmauer) wird a la Card gespeist und hier kommen die für uns ungewöhnlichere chinesischen Gerichte auf den Tisch. Wir hatten u.a. Quallensalat mit Gurke (erstaunlich fest im Fleisch und nicht klitschig, geschmacklich dezent), Entenmagen (mit reichlich Chili), Mapo Doufu (Tofu nach Sichuan-​Art in einer Chili-​Sauce), Rind mit Chili und Koriander. Die Portionen sind groß und kommen relativ zeitgleich in die Mitte des Tisches, so das sich alle davon auftun können.
Das Essen war rundum lecker, gut scharf an der Grenze zu unangenehm scharf. Getränke technisch habe ich nichts in Erinnerung behalten, bin mir auch nicht sicher ob ich ein Tsingtao oder ein Kölsch hatte :-) Der Service war freundlich zurückhaltend.
Die obersten Etage, in der auch die Toiletten (sauber und hell) sind, ist stillsicher dekoriert und für das Abendgeschäft reserviert. Hier kann man auch größere Tischgesellschaften gut unterbringen.
Wer Lust auf authentische chinesische Küche hat ist hier gut aufgehoben.

Der erste Blick in die Speisekarte besonders in der Kategorie Spezialitäten war für mich erst mal sehr gewöhnungsbedürftig. In der Touri-​Abzock-​Zone rund um den Dom hatte ich alles, aber kein typisch chinesisches Restaurant erwartet.
An sich bin ich geschmacklich sehr experimentierfreudig, nur mit Innereien kann ich gar nicht, doch zum Glück bietet die Karte neben Schweineblut, Magen & Co. auch viele andere Gerichte so dass jeder etwas findet. Besonders hervorzuheben ist die gute Auswahl an vegetarischen Gerichten. Alles was ich dort bisher probiert habe war wirklich toll, super abgeschmeckt und ein absolutes Geschmackserlebnis. Das Restaurant wird auch von vielen Chinesen besucht, was ebenfalls für die Qualität der Küche sprechen dürfte.
Ein Stern Abzug gibt es von mir leider für die etwas mürrische Bedienung und die teilweise sehr beengten Sitzverhältnisse. Wir hatten leider schon häufiger das Pech, so eng zwischen anderen Tischen zu sitzen, dass man sich quasi mit unterhalten konnte. Für ein gemütliches Essen zu zweit also nicht ganz das richtige.

Qualle mit Gurke, gem. kalte Innereien von Rind u. Schwein als Vorspeisen.
Beides ganz exzellent, ungewöhnlich und gut zubereitet. Dazu der offene Riesling des Hauses, auch ein Treffer.
Ich konnte es kaum glauben, in der Regel ist die offene Weinauswahl in Köln ja eher mäßig.
Froschschenkel Szechuan und Rindflesch mit Staudensellerie als Hauptgang. Auch hier beide Gerichte ganz fantastisch, gute Bedienung, gute Preise.
Wir waren sehr zufrieden und kommen gerne wieder!

ich hatte erst kurz überlegt ob es an mir lag: hatte ich zu hohe ansprüche? war es mein fehler, dass ich das buffet genommen habe? vermutlich nicht. ich war wirklich enttäuscht. was von anfang sehr unangenehm war: der kellner war offensichtlich sehr erkältet, jedenfalls stand er die ganze zeit quasi hinter mit und hustete und zog extrem stark die nase hoch. generell fand ich auch das buffet wirklich nicht gut. ich hatte erwartet etwas mehr zu bekommen, als in einem china imbiss. was ich vorfand, war wirklich weniger als in einem china imbiss. kaum auswahl, extrem fettig, speisen sahen aus wie lange nicht nachgefüllt. vielleicht hätte ich aus der karte bestellen sollen, aber wenn ich das z.b. mit buffet chen oder gar yummie town vergleiche, ist es wirklich ganz traurig.

UPDATE: We went there again and another 5-​star rating! Highly recommended. We loved the food their. Real cozy environment and easy-​going mood. This is the place for some authentic Chinese cusine. The food we ordered at dinner were fantastic and the original Chinese flavours are something we miss in generic Chinese Restaurants in Germany. And this Restaurant kept the roots to its origin which is important when it comes to food and spices. Many would brag about the use of oil or spices, but you have to taste the food as it’s meant to be. Otherwise just go for a Brötchen with some Wurst!

Hier muss man zwischen dem Mittagbuffet und der Abendkarte unterscheiden. Mittags gibt es ein günstiges Büffend für 7,90 Euro dass allerdings ziemlich dem deutschen Geschmack angepasst ist. Schmeckt aber ordentlich und ist immer gut besucht! Abend und natürlich auch mittags, wenn man die normal a la Carte bestellt, bekommt man authentisches chineisches Essen. Mein Begleiter hat die sehr scharfe Erfahrung mit den Sezchuan Gerichten gemacht, die wie in China auch, mit reichlich Chils versehen sind. Also testen

Best Chinese restaurant in town! Super quality, great taste, wonderful staff!

Wer zum Chinesen geht und Buffet nimmt kann kein chinesisches essen erwarten! Soviel zu den Vorrednern hier.
Sieht man sich die Spezialitätenkarte mal an findet man absolut authentisches essen! Schweinsohr war leider n bisschen hart, geschmacklich aber gut.
Zu bemängeln sind die absolut viel zu großen Portionen, 3 Gänge zu essen ist unmöglich. Der Fernseher ist völlig fehl am Platz.
Preislich und geschmacklich also absolut in Ordnung.
Wenn sie jezz noch die hässlichen Buffets rausschmeißen und den Fernseher in die küche hängen is alles ok!

Das Great Wall ist ein wirklich authentisches Chinarestaurant. Es beginnt schon bei der Karte, mit anschaulichen Fotos zu den zumeist erklärungsbedürftigen Speisen. Die Bedienung ist sehr zuvorkommend und umsichtig. Die Beratung zur Speisenauswahl ist hervorragend.
Wer wirklich chinesisch essen möchte ist hier bestens aufgehoben.

A Must visit for a real Chinese. They have dishes from every region in China, all very different and all so full of taste. Just great.
After this great food it just adds on to the whole experience to get such a great view of the Dom from the street.
