Got to the Victoria Hotel too late for food last night, then left the Victoria too late to find food on Sydney Road. That is, until we happened upon Lazy Camel on our walk back home. Undeterred by the unfortunately thought-provoking name, we ducked in. We got in just in the nick of time as the Camel likes to shut at midnight. We were absolutely drunk-starving and eyed the menu ferociously and got our orders in quick. An order of meatballs arrived with enough rice for four people, and garnished with a single green chilli stuck in the middle of it like an undetonated bomb. My chicken tikka kebabs with rice was slightly smaller but not small enough for me to finish. Both dishes were accompanied by a cooling cucumber and yoghurt sauce, and a smoky chilli herb sauce — both were very tasty. Vegetarians get to choose between a potato dish and an eggplant dish, both prepared the same way — on a bed of deliciously tangy tomato purée and topped with yoghurt. A massive basket of pita bread was the accompaniment. It’s not the best Afghan food I’ve had, but it was perfectly fine, and at around $ 14 per dish, you’ll hear no complaints from me. The Lazy Camel will get off his arse and make home deliveries for a $ 3 fee and a minimum spend between 5.30 and 9.30pm. Flash your cash. They don’t take credit cards.
