I had heard amazing things about this place, but was really disappointed. If you only like meat and deep fried fat in your burger, with no salad, then this place is for you.

A great chain and this particular store is run by a great manager. Staff is friendly and the food comes pretty quickly. If you get a great low carb meal here that won’t break the calorie bank.

Well, it is okay. Definitely not Texas barbecue. I should preface this by saying my BBQ tastes run to NC pulled pork, Memphis or Texas Ribs, and Texas style brisket and Elgin sausage. I’ve not eaten a lot of Kansas City style. While I expect things to be more expensive here, it was over 20 bucks for three not-so-meaty pork ribs and a side of potato salad, in what is essentially a fast food place. The ribs were slathered in a sweet sauce which sort of fights with the dry rub — and seemed unneeded as each table had 3 – 4 different types of barbecue sauce on them. Not sure what type of wood was used for smoking but the ribs would be in the range of average for a backyard barbecue in Texas. Potato salad was top notch. Pickles were served but no onions. As far as the other offerings, I will have to try them again in the future. I have never heard of pastrami at a barbecue place. I asked about the brisket. Fellas, a hint: any barbecue joint worth it’s salt will cut off a piece for the customer to sample. Did not take advantage of the«bottomless soft drinks» but an almost unheard of option in Melbourne. They did have Dr. Pepper in cans(invented in Waco Texas) which gave them some cred. Nice people. I’ll go back and try some brisket next.

Melbourne’s Best Dude Food BYSHARKINGFORCHIPSANDDRINKS These posts are a long time coming. My hard drive had a slight meltdown over Christmas so I had to wait for it to come back to life so I could access my photos. But here we are, at last… Dude food went global during 2012. Of course, establishments across America are well-versed in the pleasures of meat in bread, but last year saw London welcome some heavy hitters, such as Pitt Cue & Co, Dirty Burger, MEATLiquor, Duck & Waffle, and Burger & Lobster. While Melbourne fell for the cardiac-inducing charms of these beauties: Situated in Elsternwick /Caulfied this place is well worth the journey south. It’s hard to talk about Big Boy BBQ without playing it down unfairly. Yes, you order at the counter and food comes out on trays. Yes, there are huge rolls of paper towel on the table for sticky paws and faces, and yes, you get bottomless soft drinks and can sit in banquettes under a surf board or cartoon poster. But this is as far away from fast food and canteen-style eating as you could wish to get. Chicken wings dry rubbed with spices, hearty US-style sandwiches and tender slow-cooked ribs are all beautifully done. Plus, you can bring your own wine. Now that’s classy.

Meat, real meat, the smoky bbq kind is in abundance here. I had a chicken ‘sandwich’, lots of meat, but a bit light on with the salad accoutrements. The bun was small and I felt the prices were a bit steep, but the service was great, as I forgot to ask for no cheese, and when I asked them before they delivered my take-away, they had accommodated me.

Good food, loved the southern style meats and thought it was good value. The share plate was excellent for a first visit. Only downside was all the booths were taken so we had to sit outside but will definitely be heading back! Awesome that you can BYO too!

I couldn’t believe my ears when someone told me there was a BBQ restaurant in Melbourne. I almost slow roasted myself in anticipation. One of the best parts of this place is the newsagent next door — it’s now the most aromatic and delicious place to buy a newspaper in the city! I come here for two things — ribs and wings. I’ve previously tried the pulled pork and pastrami, but they’re dry and dull. Never again. The wings on the other hand: Incredible! I’d eat them for breakfast every day but Caulfield is about a million miles from my house. So I just eat them every second day.

Real BBQ, finally! I’ve been back a few times to try different things and haven’t found a bad one yet. Texas-style sliced brisket: very tender and smoky. Saucy beef brisket: more of a shredded beef, very saucy and tangy. Pulled pork: not bad, but not as flavourful as I’d have liked. Pulled lamb: the big surprise of the bunch. Very tasty. Chicken wings: not the wingette/drumette style, these are basically a quarter-chicken. Very juicy and tender. Onion strings: excellent. Going back soon for ribs… can’t wait! There’s outdoor seating on the footpath if the weather is okay, otherwise there’s a couple of large booths at the back. They also have a good selection of American soft drinks and beers.

I came here in the opening week when there was a buzz in the air as some fresh meat rolled into town. They were incredibly busy but that did not stop the service from being really friendly under all the pressure. Reading the menu got me really excited for what was about to arrive on my table, the idea of not having to wait hours for slow cooked meat… great concept. Big Boy BBQ is not trying to be anything that it’s not, it is an American style BBQ joint. For me, I was unfortunately not the biggest fan. If a couple of adaptions would have been made for the Australian market I might be a little happier. For example, I was not expecting normal $ 2 per loaf white bread with my sandwich. The other thing I didn’t like was the amount of rubbish that ends up on the table, each side comes in a paper dish which is not necessary, those little American plastic baskets would be better and not only be better for the environment be reduce costs as well. I am sure that with a couple of small changes which will happen as the new Big Boy in town finds its feet, this BBQ joint will have a good run in Melbourne.

The first real Southern style BBQ joint in Melbourne that operates throughout the week. Run by Big Boy — a South African native with a passion for all things cooked low’n’slow, Big Boy BBQ brings a taste of the South to the Southern hemisphere. Basing the menu largely on Kansas City style BBQ, the ribs are amazing, cooked for hours on low heat with plenty of smoke, and served with a sweet and tangy BBQ sauce. The Texas style brisket is more like a deli meat, and really not very similar to Texas brisket at all. I had a peek at a lamb sandwich — looked and smelled incredible. Will be ordering that for sure next time. The sides are a little unusual compared to traditional BBQ joints, a very«naked» potato salad, salty slaw but a kick-butt chili made with the burnt ends of the brisket. Another nice feature — «fountain»(post mix) drinks are serve yourself and unlimited. Dont get caught out though — BBB close relatively early at dinner time.
