This Must Be The Place

I had to check this place out, both because I love the Talking Heads song «This Must Be the Place» and because their bartenders are known as being some of the best in Sydney. Additionally, it recently won Best New Bar in Time Out Sydney.
It is a modern-​style bar on Oxford Street (in the no-man’s-land portion that is past the nightlife area but not quite in the shopping area of Paddington). Even though there is not a ton of other restaurants/​bars in the area, it is still a short walk from anything in Surry Hills/​Darlinghurst/​Paddington.
I ordered a Boulevardier. The bartender took his time (in a good way) making it. It was a Sunday afternoon, and the place was mostly bare, allowing for a good chat with the bartender as he made the drinks. He offered my friend and me recommendations for other places in the area to visit.
The Boulevardier was tasty, but slightly watered down from the large ice block. I would have preferred that the bartender wait to put the ice in so that it didn’t melt, but I imagine he was attempting to cool down the liquid. Other than that, it was tasty — a good balance between the bitterness of the Campari and the punch of the rye.

Kinda to quiet when I went there but was really nice to visit, had a good small selection of cocktails. Would go again.

It most definitely is thé place (for great cocktails, awesome night out,…) !
The cocktails are delicious and original with unusual flavours — do not hesitate to ask the staff for advice they ll be delighted to come and have a chat about their creations.
I absolutely loved the décor and ambiance: music from the 80s, Scandinavian style furniture and deco… this bar looks more like a café than an actual bar at the first glimpse but it makes it all the more cosy !
The staff is super nice and very stylish with their apron and hipster look :-)
I will be back asap to try their food and before the crowd becomes too big !

An exciting new bar with a solid pedigree. Located on the strip of Oxford St between Taylor Square and South Dowling Street, TMBTP presents an unassuming face to the world but magic lies within. The bar is the love child of two handsome guys with quality time at Eau de Vie and Vasco under their belt, and they clearly love their craft. The cocktail list is a thoughtful assemblage of interesting ingredients, not the usual tired suspects, and the tastes are quite transporting. The bar ‘snacks’ also venture far outside the usual fare and the portions are generous. There is a Spanish touch to the menu but no tired tapas plates just thoughtful matches to the wines and cocktails on offer. The wine list is quite boutique and deserving of a leisurely stroll through regional Italy, California and Victoria.
The bar itself is quite minimal — the budget has been wisely spent on designer lighting, sound system and good bar ware. The ambience is created by the utterly authentic charm of the owners, whose line in banter covers a lot of territory, and the soundtrack which mixes good 80s with 2015. This is a very good brand new bar and I suspect it will only improve with time.
