Still waiting for my coffee… Apparently another 5 mins away«there’s been a lot of coffee orders» — well yes. It’s a café, and it’s Saturday morning. Not sure what the staff were expecting. Coffee — 20mins from time of order Food — 40mins from time of order What’s frustrating about this place is that whilst the food and coffee are very good, the service leaves a lot to be desired with the standard response from staff running along the lines of «sorry, we’ve been busy». I don’t know if it’s a lack of staff on a Saturday morning(which btw are always busy), or just the server in my area not being on top of things; I heard two other tables near me ask where their orders were. I did notice that when I went to the counter to pay for my meal, the one guy who was responsible for making coffees was directed away from that task to come and settle my bill. I’m not sure why the ‘manager or owner’ not sure who it was, could not have just taken my money — she was standing right at the till and had to move so that the barista could take my money. No wonder the coffees were taking so long — I really felt for him. Won’t be back there for a while even if the food is good.

As Ella Fitzgerald and Liza Minelli serenade me, I sit at The Common in Eltham writing my review. Atmosphere, obviously, is the best thing about this place. Whether you’re sitting outside among the Eltham gum trees, watching the goings on of the busy town, or inside in the comfy armchairs by huge glass windows, the feel of The Common is super relaxed. The staff, while at times can be a little short, are never-the-less very knowledgeable. Pride in their sustainable, locally sourced produce is evident. The cold drip, single origin is not to be missed. Have it straight on ice, or add a little milk. Make sure you go with an empty stomach. There’s a breakfast steak on the menu for the more adventurous bruncher! Catering to all dietary preferences, the gluten free bread is heaven, or go bread-less and have your eggs on quinoa! The chef here is happy to accommodate you(unlike many new cafes lately who won’t change the menu for you). Well worth the drive if you’re not from the area. Eltham and the surrounding suburbs are full of great things to discover.

This place has great coffee and a good environment. With seating to match every need. Big tables, small tables, sofas, kid chairs, outside tables. Overall a great place to meet up with friends.

Excellent décor and service. I haven’t had a full meal yet… but I’m looking forward to having one here soon. I’ll update when I do!

Only called in to have a coffee but ended trying the cajun spring rolls. Odd name of a dish but I can’t fault the presentation or flavour. I’m thrilled to have a local spot that is environmentally conscious and products locally sourced where possible. Look forward to going back and trying other dishes.
