You can just tell from the building that houses Mark Tuckey’s creations that the stuff inside is going to be tasteful with clean, modernist lines. And that is exactly what the furniture here is like.
Beautiful, huge wooden numbers with simple, functional design at the heart of it, the goods here are unaffordable to me, but a visit still makes for satisfying furniture porn.
The interior of the building with its high ceilings and clean white walls makes for a meditative experience. It’s shopping and design gallery rolled into one, and I find it very soothing to gaze upon such gorgeous woody creations.
Quite fittingly, when I went out to take a picture of the Mark Tuckey building, it was the only building in that section of Johnston Street to be bathed in the light of the fiercely setting sun, whilst neighbouring buildings receded into the shadows.

If you have great taste and a penchant for reclaimed wooden furniture that errs on the side of modernism, you’ll love Mark Tuckey. An effusively expensive but damn beautiful furniture and accessories shop on Fitzroy’s Johnston Street.
Specialising in simple but striking wooden furniture in at once pared down and sculptural shapes, Mark Tuckey is definitely the place to go if you have a thing for locally made, sustainable furniture design and have the $ 2000 odd spare required for, for example, a reclaimed oak table.
If your budget doesn’t quite stretch to such a substantial piece, Mark Tuckey also sells textiles — including some awesomely striking striped rugs — books, ceramics, mirrors and more, with the impeccably tasteful aesthetic of Tuckey’s furniture running through everything sold in the shop.
Mark Tuckey’s Johnston Street studio itself is all high ceilings and vast, expansive white walls, with colourful textiles providing a beautiful counterpoint to the otherwise monochromatic — but for the wood — palette of the shop and giving it a fresh modern look. For design buffs and interiors junkies, there is none better.

I was on the hunt for a difficult present: a good friend’s older sister who’d invited me to her birthday drinks. Didn’t know much about her taste but I knew she’d just moved into a new house so though something housey would be a good idea. Mark Tuckey absolutely saved the day.
Minimal and clean-​lined yet slightly rustic furniture and homewares are the specialty here. We’re talking big slabs of wood and matt white cottage-​style jugs and vases (and the like) for very reasonable prices. That makes it sound a bit ‘country chic’ but I promise the style of the pieces is more classic than that — suited to a lot of different tastes.
The store itself is very large so it’s easy to spend some time here. Definitely worth the venture to Johnston St.

This is one of my much-​loved furniture stores in Melbourne. If you’re looking for pared down timber furniture (with a beachy, relaxed feel) — Mark Tuckey might be right for you.
Think solid timber pieces from chairs, tables and cabinets, beds, storage and even outdoor furniture that is made from new and recycled, predominantly Australian timbers. Like all furniture stores, you really need to get in on the action and sit, feel and experience the piece of furniture you are looking at.
I love how the timber tables have a relaxed, raw feel that is so exemplary of the Melbourne lifestyle. If you’re looking for pristine furniture that is poised, highly polished and perfect, this place is not for you!
All furniture is made in the Mark Tuckey Workshop so you can rest assured you’re getting quality for your top dollar. Right now I’m eyeing a lamp, a dining table and chairs but with the high price tag (that I can’t afford right now) I’ll have to admire from far and keep the woody dream alive in my mind.
