Awesome little café on Auburn Rd, opposite the Geebung. Took my brother for brunch and coffee. We were both very pleased with the menu selection and they make a fantastic coffee. Try to sit outside if you can, although seats are very limited. I’ll be back for sure.

It’s typically a riot here during peak breakfast/brunch but time it well and it’s worth it. Heaps of seating along the bar if you can’t find a seat. Food and coffee is out quickly. Standard brunch items; smashed avocado, baked eggs, etc. but done well. It can look like a Lorna Jane advertisement sometimes but persist! It’s a cool, reliable catch up point just outside the inner metro hustle and bustle.

Hello Sailor is a fresh, clean place(almost a little clinical) to visit for brunch or coffee. The Coffee excelled and the staff where nice. It was not particularly busy and allows for a relaxing way to spend your«coffee time». The staff were prompt and mechanical, eager to advise and help with your menu selections.

The husband and I ventured out of 3121 across the river on a rainy wintry Sunday morning to sample the wares of the new(ish) Hello Sailor on Auburn Road in Hawthorn. The café, which opens at 8am on weekends was empty of any other customers when we arrived just before 9am. In fact, as we approached we started to wonder if they were even open, but the fresh baked bread in the window and the glowing of lights assured as it was. It’s just that everyone was still snuggling in their warm toasty beds, instead of the warm toasty confines of Hello Sailor. We sat wherever we chose given we had the place to ourselves and were brought water and menus and a coffee order was taken immediately. A chai tea for myself and a latte for the husband. As soon as I looked at the menu I knew what we were both going to order: Porridge. It’s our addiction at the best of times, but add in the wintry weather of that day and there was no other option. Here it is a vanilla oat porridge served with apple, cinnamon & hazelnuts. The porridge came out beautifully warm and was a pretty big serve(I couldn’t finish mine). We were offered a side of milk, but neither of us needed it. There were also some sultanas(or maybe raisins) in our bowls on that cold morning. The apple seemed to be dried apple, rather than freshly stewed, which I didn’t mind, although was a little surprised by given we are in the midst of apple season. Either way, it was delicious and just what I wanted. Not tooooo sickly sweet, but it very well could be if any extra sweeteners were added. The husband cleaned his up and loved it, but like some other peeps, wasn’t a fan of the coffee(Seven Seeds) — too milky. But that isn’t a death sentence for us returning(especially as I want to try more of the menu) — next time he said he will just ask for a strong latte to see if that makes a difference. The husband also got a takeaway carrot cake cupcake for afternoon tea(which I think are made by Little Bertha). No verdict on it yet, as he has now saved it for dessert… All in all, a lovely little café, with lovely service(even though it was quiet, they were good not to «hover» too much and just let us be on our Sunday morning). Will be back!

If there is one thing Hawthorn does well it’s brunch and coffee(that’s two but excuse my love of this suburb). Another fine example of both here in this light/bright new addition to Auburn Rd. Thank god it’s here to take the pressure of The Counter which at times is so stuffed full of people it’s unbearable. And so we have, just across the road, this special place. It’s pretty small but they’ve made good use of the space and it definitely has that Scandinavian feel which is popping up and about more and more in Melbourne. Coffee is Seven Seeds and my coffee at least was perfection. I’ve heard other less favourable reviews but for me — quite wonderful. In addition to their baked eggs which look like an offering you get when you enter Heaven, they have THREE types of oats: porridge, bircher and spiced granola. After consulting on the ‘least sweet’ I was recommended the granola. It comes with yoghurt, spiced pear and lots of seeds and nuts. Delish. They have noisette bread which they sell on Wednesdays and weekends AND they sell loaves of brioche which were flying out the door when we ate. Café perfection!

Hello Sailor is already proving to be a popular little spot in Hawthorn. I stopped by for a quick refuel breakfast after a gym session. Given it was only me, I was able to nab a spot along the counter. Wanting something light, I choose the crumpets and asked super nicely if they’d change the honey to vegemite and the answer was a super friendly of course. Happy girl. My coffee arrived in potentially the biggest cup I’d ever had a long black in, but the size didn’t ruin the flavour, and I actually really enjoyed cradling it soaking it all in. I loved my food and when I have a bigger appetite, I’ll be back in to try something a little heartier. Going to turn into a popular little spot.

Newly opened Hello Sailor is a great spot for weekend breakfast. The service here is spectacular and there is a great selection of options to satisfy the serious foodie. Standout options are the Baked Eggs, French Toast. For drinks you can’t go past the Gingerbread Milkshake or Pear Juice. Both are simply divine.
