Pies pies pies pies! Hot hot hot! Extremely tasty. To die for pies! Sweet sweet pastries. Best bakery. I would like to keep this a secret from the Chu crowd(for the selfish reason of being able to walk in and order and not have to line up). The man who runs the shop front looks the part. Can not fault anything I’ve tried there. Take your goods to enjoy Hyde Park.

Run by a lovely old swiss man who bakes with love. This place has been hiding amongst the suburbia of Highgate for longer than I can remember. They have make most of the patissier classics, like croissants, flourless orange cake, fudgy mudcake, carrot cake, as well as some lesser seen items like the frangipani tarts. They also make delicious pies and pasties which makes it a great drop in spot for some lunch to go. I had the vegetarian pasty and was very satisfied.

Not all bakeries are created equally, especially when you leave the main drag and take a leisurely stroll down Lincoln St. I have been enjoying the baking creations here for over 10 years and I am never disappointed! My favourites include the Raspberry and Rhubarb tart and also the Frangipani tart which is always a hit to feed a group. I can honestly say everything is good as I have no self control when it comes to anything sweet and have tasted nearly everything. The Pearl has a quaint charm that can’t to replicated and I enjoy its personal approach to customers, especially when the owner and chef pops his head out to have a chat to you — you know this place is a jackpot. There is nothing bad to say about the Pearl and all cakes, bakes, tarts and savouries are perfect for a picnic in Hyde Park.

If anyone cared to deduce from my recent reviews, I’ve just bought an apartment. It’s in the city, technically in Perth with a 6000 postcode, but pretty much on the border of East Perth & Highgate. Naturally, word of this bakery quickly came round, & I was on a mission to find this Pearl of Highgate. The fables told of rendang pies and crème brûlée tarts, of offices having weekly Pie-day Fridays, and the constant reminder of how short a walking distance it was from me. It took me about two months before I finally got round to this treasure hunt for the coveted Pearl. Following a very vague verbal treasure map, I wandered. The shop was so understated that I almost walked right past it, but there it was, sure enough, on a humble old fashioned sign board, «The Pearl of Highgate». The first thing that hit me when I stepped in was the fragrance of fresh bake. Probably didn’t help that I was a little bit peckish, but as soon as I breathed my first breath inside the shop, I’m pretty sure I was STARVING. Not to do things in halves, I had the Con Carne pie, a Cornish pasty, a fig & pecan tart, & a loaf of wholemeal for the week. Yes, yes, yes & yes.(They were out of rendang pies for the day…) Not so many days later, I went back for a rendang pie & a crème brûlée tart, & yes & yes. As all the other reviews have mentioned, the charismatic baker is quite literally the heart & soul of this quint little joint, & you should all be jealous that this is now my local bakery. :)

This is my local bakery, and I am fiercely loyal to it. Who could blame me when everything they bake tastes so good? It’s tiny but is packed with goodies, both sweet and savoury. So let me gush for a bit… The tarts are gorgeous and are great for when you’re visiting somebody and don’t want to turn up empty handed. The orange and almond cake and the pear, white wine and polenta cake are so delicious and moist, you just feel like hoovering them. There actually almost goozy on the bottom they’re that moist. My personal favourite out of the sweet treats though is the custard danish. There are two kinds: apple and cherry. Both are to die for. The bread is top notch, but the thing I get cravings for is the beef rendang pie. The pastry is a bit unorthodox for a pie, if you ask me, but the taste matches the filling, which is seriously good. Excuse me while I drool. Add to this the lovely, friendly staff, and you get a place which very much deserves its name.

I have a secret-passion… well, that’s a lie, it’s not secret, I keep telling everyone about it. Pearl of Highgate is the best little bakery in town — it’s not French like some would think, but actually Swiss, so the choices are a little toned-down in comparison to some of the French frou-frou choux you might normally expect. Come to this bakery if you want delicious breads(they have little signs that tell you the proportion of the different flours that go into each one). They make out of this world friands and slightly heavier type cakes — the one that won me over is their jaffa cake(chocolate-orange). I tend to stop here on the way to my Grandma’s place to pick her up a little treat as they have a lovely small sized range of delicious tarts that are perfect for kaffe und kuchen.

Unilocalers however can I repay you for putting me on to this place! ‘Mind blowing cakes’ damn right! The gluten free orange and almond cake is probably one of the most delectable things to have ever passed my lips. How can something be so moist, yet fluffy yet perfectly dense all at one time?! You’ll want to go gluten free for life, purely through eating this cake for breakfast lunch and dinner for the rest of your life! Can’t wait to go back and try everything they bake. This place is takeaway only, which means you can indulge in multiple cakes in the privacy of your own home!

I like it here, I mean I really like it here. The cakes are mind blowing. The bread is fresh as ever. The sausage roll and pies, are actually nice. And the mini tarts, were undesirably good. I had 2 tarts and a slice of cake in one sitting. So many calories, but so delicious. I don’t know how I managed to eat it all, I don’t think I stopped to breathe. The owner is one of the nicest people I have met. He is always so friendly and helpful. This is wonderful in so many ways.

Just a short stroll from Hyde Park, this is one of those places that you don’t hear much about in Perth, but you should. It is a swiss style patisserie, with all the normal baked delights from bread to pastries, but also with some twists like the frangipani tarts. My fellow Unilocaler compared them to Miss Maud. This place doesn’t compare. Miss Maud is a has been. The Pearl is at the top of its game. The staff here have personality which always makes a visit interesting.

This bakery has all the standard bakery stuff, but what sets them apart is the not so usual bakery items. Try the frangipani tarts or the chicken curry pies. The staff here have personality, especially the owner who likes to chat to customers whenever he can. I have friends that are allergic to gluten. Quite frankly it is my worst nightmare. I don’t think my life would be the same if I couldn’t eat anything that had wheat in it. For my poor friends that suffer from coealics I like to make sure that when they come for special occasions I can provide them with a gluten free treat. The Pearl of Highgate is my main source for yummy gluten free treats.

Rightly named, this quaint Swiss bakery and patisserie is a short wander from Hyde Park and is Highgate’s best-kept secret. Each morning, the charismatic baker and owner, fervently pumps out gorgeous baked breads, traditional pastries and a unique display of cakes and tarts. In between all his baking, he makes an effort to greet walk-ins with a jovial«Hello!» in his charming Swiss-German accent. Most popular are the mini tarts — frangipani with blackberry, raspberry, currant or plum or nut-based varieties like sticky pecan with fig and macadamia with date. There are also sausage rolls and pies for a working lunch, and striking special occasion cakes in a temperature controlled fridge. Gluten free folk are not forgotten either and will love the moist orange and almond mini cake. My families’ most favourite though is the marbled Jaffa. How do you say ‘yummy’ in German?
