Very impressed. Nice space, every dish was great and the staff were very attentive and polite. So, we enjoyed everything. The sashimi and sushi were excellent, as were a number of other dishes. We also thought the prices were v reasonable. We were taken here by friends who live in the area. The restaurant is apparently a bit of a local favourite. I can see why. Very impressive. I would happily return.

As someone who consistently seeks new flavours, experiences and techniques, Chiba Japanese restaurant has again proven its longevity after I’ve returned for yet another of its simply and expertly executed meals. The décor is modern and the furnishings clean, with finesse that is uniquely Japanese, setting the tone for the meals that rapidly flow from the kitchen. Fresh & traditional dishes are served by polite wait staff who weave through the often fully booked restaurant efficiently and professionally. All levels of flavour preferences can easily be met; you will often see children with their parents at the first dinner sitting, and popular Western favourites like hand rolls and teriyaki chicken also grace the menu. This however, is not what should be expected as the standard from Chiba, as they offer dishes for a more refined palette like takaki beef and octopus sashimi. Comfortable, impeccable and very reasonably priced, Chiba Japanese restaurant never disappoints.

Chiba rocks. The food is always perfect, the wait staff are friendly and helpful, the prices are super cheap for what you get(think $ 35 per person for a six course banquet), and it has a good atmosphere with a soft but sophisticated vibe. This is one of my favourite places to eat out, and I can’t wait to go back!

This place has everything you need * great food * great staff * great location You can’t go wrong, I think I have tried everything on their menu at least once and I have never been disappointed. Everything is always so fresh! It makes me wonder just how they get so much good food in the door! We will always go back, the food is just great!

Decent sized meals, reasonable prices and friendly staff. Recommended. The place is hidden away but is not on a main road so there is easy foot access.

Chiba used to occupy a much smaller venue on Hall Street closer to the Mt Alexander Rd end. They were pumping then, always having a full dining room so I was interested when they moved to see if they could keep it up. They can! The food is fresh and tasty. The Kaki Fry(fried oysters) is one of my favorites and never fails to satisfy. The sushi is delicious and creative. The staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant décor creates a good atmosphere however this is let down whenever the phone rings. The ringing tone sounds like a poker machine and gave myself and my guest an unfortunate vibe last time we visited. This aside Chiba is a great Japanese restaurant that i will continue to visit.

In recent times Chiba have stepped up their game with their sushi in a big way. My wife has exceptional standards when it comes to Sushi rolls, having come from a country which takes sushi creativity to the extreme. Chiba has now been meeting her standards, and we strongly recommend you go if you’re in the area. Usually we do take away, and they process our order very fast and the sushi is always very fresh. If you love ginger with your sushi, be sure to ask for more. :-) The restaurant has a very classy atmosphere of you choose to eat in. We have not sampled their wider Japanese cooked fare, as we can never get past the sushi and sashimi. However I have heard good things about the rest of the menu from friends. If you’re in the ponds be sure to check it out. :-)

So, I have been a lazy blogger and yes I haven’t been out to restaurants much lazy, I mean lately: S Well I did a job for my friends mom just fixing her lights and also taught my friends little brother how to ride a bike as he was going to go camping very soon. She told me to pick a good Japanese restaurant to go to and she will shout me, me being me I showed a bit of resistance to the offer until I caved in like a b****. I decided to hit Chiba, I have never been here before and I wanted to see how it compared to my regular Japanese eat-out, Peko Peko in collingwood. The setting of the restaurant was stunning, the people did a really good job displaying the Japanese culture, except for the non japanese waiters who my friends little brother sused out cuz he learns lapanese in school, just kidding, I am pretty sure it would be tight to have a restaurant that hires only Japanese waiters :/. Damn just noticed I ramble too much, sorry been out of the game for too long, well the service was friendly, but seemed to have that amateur like glow to them, you know what I mean? Miso soup! Has to be the greatest invented soup ever but the bowl wasn’t big enough and OMG they added mushrooms to it! I am not kidding, it made the soup even better, I know for next time to order a bigger bowl! All me and my friend ate was sushi for the main, lots of sushi. My favourite one is the inside out sushi with the caviar on the outside, those pops inbetween your teeth with that exploding flavour, if your lucky enough there is still some in your mouth for you to pop while driving back home on a relaxing endorphin rush. All sushi was decent quality, hand rolled and doesn’t have that dry cheap flavour to it. Tuna and salmon is a must when ordering tuna, we kept in coming, and my friend even teased his little brother on having the last one left. My friends sister had teriyaki chicken which I had a piece of and the marinate was in my top 5, it was beautiful and I wish I had ordered it. My friends brother had egg noodles with something, I honestly can’t remember off the top of my head because I didn’t have any, too full from the sushi! To conclude we walked out and my friends little brother said good bye and thank you in japanese to the owner on the way out and the owner said it back, my friend joked«At least the owners Japanese» HAHA Atmosphere: 10⁄10 Setting: 10⁄10 Service: 7⁄10 Food: 7⁄10

We tried to get into Chiba 4 times so it feels like we’ve been going here for ages(hint: book a reservation in person). Chiba does 2 seatings, which meant we had to be in and out in 1.5 hours. The food was a mixed bag. Some things(kaki fry — fried oysters) tasted just like they do in Japan. Others were adapted to the point of not being recognizable: our order of udon, while delicious, came without broth; our yakizakana(grilled fish), while good, was covered in some type of sauce and arrived on top of a salad. Good food but I suspect it will take 2 or 3 passes through the menu to come up with a few more authentic Japanese items.
