Le Beau has a beautiful French-styled verandah overlooking the river. In spring the Jacaranda tree flowering makes it even more special. The food is pretty good and they’ve just introduced new desserts in their cabinet which look great. The biggest turn off for me is that they serve their French toast with fruit and maple syrup with maple-flavoured corn syrup. It’s yuck. And for $ 16 a plate you’d think maple would be genuine. Heck, I’d rather pay an extra dollar and have the real deal. I don’t order that dish anymore. But other dishes are good… We are regulars and enjoy going there.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that when travelling through a small country town, one must indulge in scones with jam(and cream). Or maybe that’s just my truth. Thankfully this pocket of French shabby chic with Laduree boxes and candy-filled apothecary jars decorating the counter, delivered. Le Beau Café, as well as being cute as a button, looked to be the best on Swan Street when we visited Morpeth the day after New Year’s Day. We sat inside and ordered the scones with ‘French’ jam and cream. Turns out the ‘French’ jam was a miniature jar of Bonne Maman strawberry jam. Yes, I’m ashamed to admit that I kept the jar of jam. Without sounding like one of the actors reading Unilocal reviews, the scones were warm, soft and fluffy pillows — just as scones should be. They weren’t kidding when they claimed them to be freshly baked. Our coffees were equally on par. Le Beau Café has a light café menu with most lunches leaning towards salads. A great stop to slow down, stop and smell the Morpeth roses.
