Nature Play Space

Quite possibly the most BORING name for a most wonderful location in the Perth Cultural Centre. Just follow the sounds of xylophones and percussion. It won’t lead you to PICA Bar or the LED screen.
Let’s face it, this space is designed for kids but I have yet to come by and not see adults getting in amongst the cacophony. Parents might get involved helping their kids out but it doesn’t take long for them to belt out a tune while their child has run off to play on one of the drums or to investigate another part of the Nature Play Space.
I do love how it is impossible to play something awful or out of tune. This does get put to the test during weekends when big kids after drinking a few big kid drinks have a play.

Nature play space is a pioneer for playgrounds!
Casually strolling through the museum plaza a distinct sound spoke to me.. . it was the chime of xylophones!!! There is something magical about the nostalgia evoked in me by the sound and I suspect it is because, if much of my child hood had a theme song, I have no doubt that the xylophone would be one of the main instruments!
This playground is like no other play ground I have ever seen– no swings, no slides, no jungle gyms or flying foxes yet children (and slightly more conspicuous children at heart) flock and frolic and are completely captivated by this space.. . why? It is a visual and audio wonderland! Designed by Josh Byrne and Associates– nothing like a celebrity gardener to give some credibility to a place– this space is an absolute dream! With a wooden crocodile bench and xylophones galore– there are even man powered hypnotic wheels– woo-​hoo-​hoo, hours of fun right there! The designers of this playground of genius-​ness have also designed the «urban orchard» and the «wetlands» spaces in the cultural centre, so many kudos to them!!!
