Warmer weather is here, the sun is out and we are catching up with friends on a Sunday for lunch… what to do?! let’s have a picnic!
Just around the corner for us and a 15 minute drive from the city is a lush green slice of scenery from a classic english novel, or the casual scene from a youthful romcom in central park in NY. Having been here makes me feel poetic.
There is free parking on Sundays and public hols or its a nominal fee to keep the greenskeepers fed and watered. There’s wildlife to be seen in certain pockets of the gardens and lovely flora every which way you turn.
A lovely afternoon was had by all and the fresh air is a great way to start the week ahead. Great for a stroll too if you’re so inclined… but be aware there are some slight inclines!

Came here late afternoon so wasn’t able to explore much, however, what I saw in a short amount of time was beautiful. Going back here when the weather clears — and yes, i’ll make sure I go early!

I love this place. I’m perfectly happy for everyone else to pretend it doesn’t exist, it leaves me with a peaceful place to come and unwind every now and then.
A few weeks ago, I had eaten far too much at the Mt Lofty restaurant up the road. It isn’t hard to do, the food is really quite nice. Anyway, on my way home, I thought I’d stop here and relax for awhile, just have a nice walk and appreciate the place. It’s really, really peaceful. I can understand why some people don’t like the peacefulness of the place, but for me it’s just so relaxing.
I’ll keep coming back here until the crowds start showing up, and then I’ll find somewhere else.

I really do like coming here when the weather is nice. I pack a lunch, and after eating whatever tasty morsels have managed to find their way into my basket, I go for a nice long walk. Sometimes it’s nice to come up here to wander around on my own, as it’s really quiet and gives me a place to ponder my troubles. At other times, it’s nice to wander around with a special someone.
I really do get the feeling that it’s an under-​utilised place, and that’s a bit sad, really. It’s so beautiful and so peaceful. I suppose that’s part of why I like the place, though.

When I think of Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens I see roses, roses, roses, more roses. I think I only come here in spring, when the temperature’s more to my liking. It does always seem to be VERY quiet, perhaps with the odd elderly gent, or Mt Lofty guest strolling along. I like it though. In the words of the great Dazza Kerrigan, «How’s the serenity (cue bug being toasted), so much serenity!» In a nutshell — I like saying the word serenity too!

The Mount Loft Botanical Gardens are a lovely blend of lush native South Australian habitat and beautiful imported flowers. It’s a bit out of the way from the city and as Elissa noted, generally quite empty but for me that all amounts to a pretty zen experience when you’re here.
The trails and grounds are impeccably maintained and there’s so much variation in plant life to keep any botanically inclined person stooping and peering all day long. I love coming here to hang out with friends on the occasional picnic or fishing expedition (fishing is actually highly prohibited in the lake, so do so at your own risk and put anything you catch back!).
As with most gardens, Spring and Autumn are the seasons to visit as you’ll catch the magnificent display of fresh blooming roses and natives, or the majestic decline of seasonal plants into winter.

I’m not really sure how I feel about Mt Lofty botanical Gardens. To be completely honest I think it’s a little lonely there, some might call it peaceful but there’s a certain edge to that peace that’s a little sad. I suppose it’s because it’s like the forgotten secret garden, the car park is empty and there doesn’t seem to be anyone around. I remember coming here when I was a lot younger and the garden seemed to thrive, there were picnics and concerts of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, children running around.
I went last week and it was quiet, and the quiet was a heavy presence (I’m a poet) so I wasn’t inclined to stay very long. The gardens are beautiful though, especially on the Piccadilly end where it’s a bit flatter ground, it’s a fair hike up to the summit but it’s a picturesque one. I just think everyone should come back and play.
