Rite Price Grocery Clearance Store

This place is in a category of it’s own. Having in possession an iron stomach is a must as yes the food can be out of date, yes it can be shipped for un recognizable places that sound like they were made up on the spot and yes it does carry flavor combinations that will make you question the sanity of everybody involved in putting that piece of weird garbage on the shelf, but that’s what makes it an AWESOME destination. While you should never rely on shopping here for your basics (I don’t know if I’ll ever be game to buy dairy/​meat/​spoilable stuff) they always carry the stuff that you lament when it gets pulled from the shelves prematurely. Popped chips for fifty cents, broken belvita bars four for 3 dollars, the savings are crazy if you’re up for a bit of a gastronomical adventure. While some times there are some let downs others can be hilarious. Tim tams that had been melted from the heat looked like they had a later of mould but when we asked friends it was just the fat separating on the surface. See guys, good fun!
Also the staff are wonderful! They really do love a bargain and will recommend the best of the bunch! Amazing!

Good old Rite Price.
To think I know people who throw out unopened food that’s past its use-​by date. Fair enough, perhaps, in the case of oysters, but noodles? Potato chips, soft drinks, tinned fish etc etc?
This place is an Aladdin’s Cave for the astute, and game, shopper. A kilo of premium brand margarine for $ 2. More Easter eggs than you can poke a stick at, straight after Easter, el cheapo! How about a 5kg tin of Russian beet root, or 500g of wet green peppercorns?
Toothpaste and shampoo are cheap too — and they have top brands.
Before you think I might work there, there are a few cautions. When I proudly turned up at a BBQ with my beautiful, dark red, yellow-​marbled bulk lump of beef, a butcher in attendance told me that what I had bought was probably the mortal remains of a worn out milk cow, and lectured me on bright red flesh and white marbling. In other words, avoid Rite Prices’s cheap ‘scotch fillet’.
I’ve never been sure about Rite Price’s eggs, either.
So it’s buyer beware, but in my experience most of the products are good-​o.
There’s another class of products there too, in addition to the use-​by stuff. These items could be called ‘What was Marketing thinking of??’.
Why didn’t people go for lemon-​flavoured diet Coke? Or peanut-​flavoured potato chips, or Jamie Oliver’s grind your own spice curry kits? You can find out by buying them, and other orphans and failures from the innovative world of grocery marketing.
But whatever you do, if you’re half-​smart you can struggle out of Rite Price with your own bodyweight in groceries for a fraction of the price you’d pay at the big guys.
Easy parking next door, or go at odd hours.

So here’s a little insight into my background: I grew up in a family who owned a supermarket meaning that anytime that something was about to go out of date… or actually DID, it would end up on our dinner table — and here’s the thing… I never got sick and it always tasted great (which could have something to do with my mum being some what of a master chef…)
Anyhow, my point is that the ‘use by’ or ‘best before’ is just a date for legal purposes (for many but not all products)…there is a bit of flexibility here.
Those of you unfamiliar with the Rite Price chain may wonder why I am bringing this up, so here’s the deal: Rite Price is a discount supermarket. Not all, but most of there wares are on the shelves because they are near this use-​by or past their best before and are therefore severely discounted.
So here’s a depressing fact — 20% of all our groceries go to waste… and I recall that when we had the supermarket, a lot of stuff ended up in the bin. It’s such a shame to straight out waste food — but you can prevent food being wasted by supermarkets AND save yourself a BUNCH of dolla dolla by having a look at Rite Price!
Now they don’t have EVERYTHING but if you head here first, you can definitely plan around what you can find and as the previous reviewer wrote, yes there are always plenty of cheap treats for the sweet tooth.
Recent bargains — HUGE wheels of cheese — brie, blue and all the fancy ones, still in date for a few days for only $ 4.50. Perfect for the weekend picnic, yes?
Added bonus — they are now open til 7pm on Thursdays for all those who work all day long! — enjoy the cheap life!

Once upon a time I would never dream of going into a discount super market, oh what I was missing! Rite Price is a wonderful place, especially if you don’t believe what the used by date says! There are many products that are in date and you can really get a great bargain, and then there are the Eastern European Imported products that are as entertaining as finding a tin in your pantry without a label and daring yourself into eating whatever the contents may be!
I particularly like the Prospect Venue as I have found the staff there particularly friendly and always keen for a brief chin wag while scanning your goods… not too much of a chat, just enough to pass the check out time. No one likes a ‘Chatty Cathy’!
P. S. If you have a sweet tooth like myself you save a bundle if you stock up rather than going to traditional sources!
