The word Souvenirs always puts me off a shop. The whole fun of getting souvenirs is finding them yourself! This isn’t a typical souvenir shop however. It’s quite a bit better than most, because nothing it sells is cheap, nasty, and largely embarrassing to Australia as a self-respecting nation. It smells strongly of leather, because it’s actually a shoe repair shop. I think the smell also comes from the various akubra hats and other bags and coats around that all seem to be made out of some kind of animal skin. In terms of dust collectors, they sell very little, only a few boomerangs and painted plates and what-not. While I was in here, an English couple were having a handbag looked at by the shop owner, who was trying to fix it. I think this sums up the shop — serving overseas patrons with much more than cheap trinkets.

Recently added to McHales Shoe Repair at Semaphore, Sempahore Souvenirs sells some good quality Australian souvenirs, with a lot of the products sourced locally, including akubras, didgeridoos, stuffed toy animals and opals. There are also some custom made leather goods(whips and belts mainly). For a small store it’s got some pretty good things in stock, and from what I remember it’s the only souvenir store down Sempahore Road.
