Seacrest Fish & Chip Bar

Seacrest Fish & Chip Bar does some of the best, most consistent takeaway food in this part of the city. I would even go as far as to say that it’s the best fish and chips that I’ve had in year. Grilled or battered, the fish in particular is almost always beautifully cooked. The battered fish is especially worth noting. It’s not battered to within an inch of its life, as it seems to be practically elsewhere else, but sparingly, almost lightly. It’s not tempura, but it’s similar, with the fish not so encased in batter than it cannot breathe but rather peeking through a transparent layer of the stuff that hasn’t soaked up too much oil.
The chips, potato cakes and other offerings are similarly well done. The chips remind me of the old advertisement for Kraft peanut butter: never oily, never dry. Everything is cooked in rice oil, which is meant to be better for you, and well-​drained.
Owned by a lovely husband and wife team, who are the very embodiment of politeness and service with a smile, the store is a local favourite with good reason. People come for the fish and keep coming for the hospitality.
