This is a gorgeous little bakery that specialises in German delicacies like apple, poppyseed and cherry plunder and bretzels. The apple plunder is the most outrageously delicious apple pastry I’ve ever had and involves deliciously crispy and buttery pastry topped with custardy cooked apple and sprinkled with crumble and icing. It’s certainly a little more calorie-​laden than a croissant (which, incidentally, they do as well) but it’s pretty much impossible to go past once you’ve tried one. They also stock a little selection of German goods, including bratwurst and liverwurst, some cured meats, Ritter chocolate and other bits and pieces. They do a good selection of savoury things too, as well as beautiful breads. There’s some limited seating outside the café and they do coffees too, so you could make it a morning tea or breakfast spot, but it’s always absolutely heaving with customers, so for me this is a take away affair.

When I arrived in OZ the only thing I really missed from Europe was bread! Decent, chewy, dark bread! ;) So I went crazy googling for bakeries and found King of Cakes. Since then I am a regular customer! They are a bit pricey but it’s really worth it!
I love their sunflower bread, sourdough etc. and I am also a big fan of their sweet corner. For all the chocolate junkies out there (like I am) the «Death by Chocolate» cake is just yum.
Since I’ve tasted their friands I tried various different recipes to bake it myself (otherwise I would have been broke by now) — they still don’t taste the same but I can live with that! ;)
They also sell more «german» stuff like sausages, sauerkraut, jams and prepacked sandwiches for the ones on the go!
And they take orders via phone! Some of the bread loafs sell out pretty quickly!

King of Cakes makes a pretty outrageous claim — and to be honest I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually had their cakes. That’s probably because I’m not much of a cake girl.
I have eaten a fair bit of their baked goods though, both at this shop on my way to uni located at the Gailey 5 Ways (which I always consider more St Lucia than Taringa) or at the Oktoberfest.
It’s good! *cough* sorry, ist es sehr gut. If you’re a fan of all things strudel you need to try it too.

The only reason I need to go to King of Cakes is for their delicious giant pretzels. Nothing else is of interest to me, but the rest of their baked goods – cake, bread, etc. – do look good also. King of Cakes are pretty much THE German bakery in town, catering the German Film Festival and Brisbane’s Oktoberfest.
The only unfortunate thing about King of Cakes Taringa is its cramped car park, otherwise it’s definitely worth a try if looking for something baked and yummy.

If you are after a sit down coffee and cake or catering for a party, these barons of baked goods will surely impress. The owner comes Munich where his family ran cafes for years, and he has a wealth of knowledge on artisan baking methods. They first opened in Brisbane in 1990 and now have multiple locations throughout the city, selling a huge range of breads, cakes and pastries made from traditional European recipes. They also have sit down cafes in their stores.
My personal favourites are their quiches, which come in ‘family’ ($ 28) or ‘mini’ ($ 4.50) sizes and a range of flavours — spinach, Lorraine or asparagus. The asparagus is my pick of the bunch.
On the sweet side of things I can’t go past the ‘Coffee slice’ — a triangular treat featuring vanilla & chocolate sponge soaked with vanilla syrup and filled with coffee butter cream. Yum!
