I recently spent a few hours at a lovely Irish Pub by the name of Dicey Reilly’s, situated in Garden City shopping centre. On first appearances it seemed a little dodgy; scratched wooden panelling everywhere and regretful-looking Irish antiques and posters covering the walls. Not to be dismayed, I planted myself on a seat at the empty looking bar and was immediately greeted by the manager, and before I could say slainte I had a Guinness sitting in front of me. The staff were more than accommodating, striking up conversation with patrons and always on hand to pour a cold beer. While I enjoyed the ‘old pub’ charm that Diceys seemed to be aiming for, I can’t help but feel that many customers would not enjoy the dim atmosphere and low-level lighting. Surely a pub for the regulars, but maybe not for the young tourist.
