A delightful evening was spent here. Sheer food bliss!
Saigon is located in a larger establishment close to the museum quarter in Vienna. Ample seating and great for groups. It’s also really clean, well decorated and staff were very friendly and helpful during our dinner.
Upon arrival we were seated promptly and provided a menu. Options are available in English which is a plus.
So, we ordered beef phở, grilled pork with rice noodle, chicken rice paper rolls and another small bowl of beef phở (I couldn’t decide what I wanted so I got two meals!)
Everything came out at once as per my request. This was done promptly and the food was so fragrant and appealing I couldn’t wait to tuck in. The phở– delicious. I often have difficulty with chewy beef but this was no issue today. The noodles with grilled pork was a well seasoned delight; salty, sweet, crunchy, chewy. It was the perfect balance and I enjoyed every bite.
The rice paper rolls were also delicious with a lovely dipping sauce to accompany.
Just a really impressive meal overall that is decently priced. I was happily full in my belly and we were given complimentary tapioca and coconut puddings which was the perfect sweet finish to the meal.
So with all that and two drinks the total came to 40 euros (including tip). Highly reccomended if you’re in the area and if you’re not, it’s definitely worth the journey over.

Das Saigon gabs schon bevor Vietnamesisch in Wien cool war und jeder es gemacht hat, deshalb schon mal extra Punkte für den Pioniergeist. Ich hatte ja vor dem Besuch etwas Angst, dass das Lokal deshalb etwas eingestaubt sein könnte, was sich aber fast gar nicht bestätigt hat. Die Einrichtung ist zwar definitiv nicht wie beim Bobovietnamesen, aber dafür klassisch, angenehm und vor allem hell. Nur bei der Speisekarte erlaubt man sich einen Fehler alter Asiazeiten: die Karte ist viel zu voll und unübersichtlich, da helfen auch die Bilder der Speisen wenig.
Ich habe ein klassisches Phở ausgewählt und es war absolut fantastisch: die Brühe, das Fleisch, die Gemüse, die Soße, da hat alles gestimmt, besser gehts nicht. Meine Freundin hatte ein Tofu Wok Gericht dass auch lecker war. Und jetzt der Grund warums nur 4 Sterne sind: beim Tofu musste man den Reis extra bestellen (warum, warum wird das heute noch gemacht, ich kanns nicht verstehen) und uns wurde eine Portion gebracht aber zwei verrechnet. Auch wenns sicher keine Absicht war, das geht einfach nicht. Bitte hört mit dem albernen Reis extra verrechnen auf dann kann sowas auch nicht passieren und dann gibts auch fünf Sterne.

Stumbled upon this place one night while searching for nearby pubs. Went here the next day for lunch after a night of heavy drinking, and it was exactly what I needed. It is a big, very clean restaurant. The service was pretty fast as well. I ordered the chicken phở with some summer rolls as my appetizer. The soup was amazing. The broth was very tasty and clean, not greasy at all. They use white meat for the chicken, and the chicken was basically shredded, so you didn’t need to cut up large pieces of meat and stuff. They don’t have sriracha, but they have a plethora of hot sauces that work just as fine. Also, I believe the entire waitstaff speak at least some English, so communication wasn’t an issue for me as a stupid American.
In conclusion, if you’re in Vienna and want a nice hot bowl of phở, go to this place. Just do it!

Mir hats hier leider nicht so geschmeckt, da es für Vegetarier eine nur begrenzte Auswahl gab. Leider war auch das wenig Vegetarische, das sie hatten, mit Fischsauce. Somit musste ich sogar meinen Salat zurückgehen lassen.
Ich glaube aber, dass für Leute, die Fleisch gerne mögen es dort ganze leckere Sachen gibt. Ein Top Lokal ist es sicherlich nicht. Die Einrichtung sieht auch veraltet und verschmuddelt aus.
Trennung von Raucher und Nichtraucher könnte auch besser gelöst sein.

That interior and food is typical what you can expect. We had a phở soup and it was really delicous. I prefer more herbs, but meat inside soup was really in good quality and service there was nice. They are having many types of mixed drinks and also deserts. If you like this cuisine I think that you will be satisfied:)

Came here DESPERATE for a green veggie and for anything spicy. I had read a million reviews and nearly cried from joy when I heard someone *complain* about how spicy everything was here. Nothing gets me into a restaurant like a complaint about the spice, and I am eternally grateful to the poor soul whose mouth had to suffer in order to alert me to this hidden gem.
I came here at 2pm on a Sunday and was surprised how busy, and spacious Saigon Restaurant was! The décor was lovely and quaint, and the open windows on the quiet street were so refreshing on such a hot day. My friend and I both ordered coconut curry phở, and stressed to the server that we wanted it HOT. We were not disappointed. It might have ben 34 degrees out but nothing kept me from diving headfirst into the delicious phở. If I could have eaten the entire portion I would have. Everything about it was what I wanted and for 11 Euros I could not complain about quality or quantity.
To say I will be back is an understatement, this will be my first stop every time I visit Vienna. Thank you to Saigon Restaurant for making a day in Vienna a culinary experience!

We both enjoyed our dinner here. We were over European food and have tried a few Asian restaurants in Europe and this was by far the best we had in Europe yet. The duck and pork stew was amazing. Staff was friendly and thank goodness they had English menu, so I didn’t have to use my translation app to type in for translation.

Phở Bo war sehr gut, die restlichen Speisen als auch das Lokal und Bedienung in Ordnung. Man kann hier gut essen, ich würde aber keine ausserordentlichen Erlebnisse erwarten.

Cozy yet spacious environment, great service and the food is wonderful. The spicy Chicken Curry Pot was excellent so look forward to trying this place again. Many of the meals could be modified to fit Paleo or Vegetarian diners. The rice noodle were on the side so it was easy to make it grain-​free. The presentation of the food was very notable as they used lovely edible garnishes including flowers and pineapple bowls. It appeared that I had 4 waiters and all were very friendly and hospitable. Best service I have had so far in Vienna!

Totally agree with the reviewer who said it’s the best Vietnamese restaurant in Europe. My husband and I (we’re both Asian) used to eat Vietnamese food on a weekly basis when we lived in CA and Hawaii, so we’ve been searching for a good Vietnamese restaurant similar to what we’re used to in Europe. While living in Europe, we’ve tried Vietnamese restaurants in various countries, but Saigon is definitely the winner! Clean, nice ambiance, authentic and tasty food, all the expected condiments, extensive menu choices and friendly service! Just like your favorite Vietnamese restaurant back home!

I grew-​up in San Jose, CA/​Little Saigon. Yes, the neighborhood I grew-​up in is officially named Little Saigon by the SJ municipality. I know two or three things about Vietnamese food. Upon arriving to Vienna, all I wanted was my bowl of steaming phở tai bo and ca phe sua da amongst the sea of kebab and 5 euro, 50%-off AKTION sushi.
When my Viennese friends suggested Saigon for my phở craving, I was skeptical. Real skeptical. Vienna doesn’t have a strong Vietnamese diaspora, as say Munich or Paris, and too many AKTION Asian food specials turned me into an Asian food cynic. For those of you who grew-​up in the Vietnamese diaspora or simply love Vietnamese, ignore the skeptism and hurry down to Karlzplatz A.S.A.P.
I started with my beloved phở bo tai, sliced beef phở. Simple, delicious and a classic. Saigon’s phở had a nice rich broth with the perfect sliced beef ratio to noodles and broth. For Vietnamese food novices, phở is customizable and no (wo)man’s phở is the same. I personally like mine with the usual herb garnishes dumped into my bowl, extra lime, no hoisin sauce (that little black-​ish goopy sauce next to the chili) and simple. If you want spice, each table is set with its 4 sauce assortment of nuoc mam with chili and 3 variations of chilis. Experiment and see what works for you.
To my Central European friends, remember and sing this with me: ca phe sua da. Vietnamese iced coffee, strong fresh brewed cold coffee balanced by a dollop of condensed milk and ice.
Until the day comes where I can ship an East SJ Vietnamese restaurant complete with a «Paris by Night» soundtrack and aging aunties, Saigon is this Californian’s Vietnamese phở place in Wien.

My first Vietnamese experience in Vienna and it was lovely! The staff were friendly, the place is big but has a cosy feel and of course what I came for … the Phở was excellent! I had the Phở with Beef, Pork and seafood, good ratio if meat to noodle and really very tasty with the extra sprinkling of coriander and spring onion. The price was also reasonable € 9.90 for the Phở. All in all a very friendly and tasty experience :)

We arrived at our hotel in Vienna, starving teenagers with us, and wanted something quick and casual. Saigon is really convenient to the museum and opera district. The place looks clean and welcoming with tasteful décor. The restaurant doors are widely open to the street so there is traffic noise and a couple of flies come in. The staff are courteous and they speak English.
I had the chicken curry with veg, lovely fresh salad, also the fried spinach as a side dish. Others in the party had fried beef noodles, beef with lemon grass, and crispy duck noodles. All good and tasty. Portions are fairly large. You could split a portion with a friend.
For four people with a bottle of water, one beer and a soda it was 66 euro. That included the appetizer sampler plate which I thought was the only pricey item at 13 euro.
Overall we were very happy.

Für diejenigen, welche die vietnamesische Küche nicht kennen, empfehle ich das Saigon. (Die Speisekarte hat Bilder drauf ;))
Als Landsfrau kann ich sagen, dass zumindest die berühmte Phở Suppe auf alle Fälle empfehlenswert ist für diejenigen, die das noch nie probiert haben. Der Preis bei 9,90 € ist gerade (finde ich) noch bei der Schmerzgrenze, die Portion ist in Ordnung. Bei großem Hunger würde ich dennoch eine Vorspeise bestellen. Die anderen «typischen» asiatischen Speisen (sorry, nicht alles ist authentisch Vietnamesisch, aber das ist ja normal) habe ich leider nicht probiert.
Und für Erdnuss-​Allergiker: Bitte bei jeder Speise angeben, dass da jemand allergisch ist ;) Sogar bei der Nachspeise nochmals darauf ansprechen, bevor es noch né böse Überraschung gibt.

Loved this place. And it was very group friendly. The inside is really big but cosy at the same time. The service was really nice.
The food was very good and tasty, great portion sizes! The menu is extensive and has more choice than a lot of other Vietnamese restaurants.
I shared number 29 (crispy wan tan filled with shrimps and chicken) and then had number 141 crispy roasted chicken with lemongrass and ginger which was extremely good.
I want to say that comparing it with the other Vietnamese restaurants I’ve been to, this place has kind of westernised its menu a little… Lots of fried dishes compared to other Vietnamese places. But I am not an expert in Vietnamese food, so I am not sure! Still… I really enjoyed the food!!! I would definitely recommend it.

In desperate need of Asian food, we decided to go here bc our host recommended the place (she knew the owner). We walk in and immediately I think to myself that this place looks pretty fancy for a Vietnamese place. Not that Vietnamese restaurants can’t be fancy but I’m just used to eating at phở places that aren’t too much about the décor. I digress. Anywho, I ordered the monk fish and phở tai. The monk fish was good and the phở was okay as well. Nothing amazing but I wasn’t expecting much since we were in Vienna. It tasted good enough for my craving, especially after going hard the night before. I got one phở tai to go bc it seems like you can’t get any type of delivery here and this place is a ghost town at night. The food hit the spot again.

Good Vietnamese restaurant located just around the corner from Karlsplatz and the Museumquarter.
My wife had Phở soup which was delicious and a Vietnamese restaurant staple for us. I has grilled pork and rice (#77). The pork was perfectly cooked and had a nice topping of scallions and something else I couldn’t quite pinpoint but it was delicious.
We came with a two year old and were happy they could accommodate small children. They had a babychair and brought out a fish shaped plate to keep him occupied.
They have a separate non smoking section which is a huge plus. Not only is it in a completely separate side of the restaurant but there is also a glass partition.
Service was good and we were happy with the attention to our son as well as not all restaurants are so welcoming to kids. They probably delivered the best service we have had at any restaurant so far in Vienna.

Great place to eat.
We were in a group of 10 people, but this place can manage bigger groups.
The service was good and friendly and the food was outstanding. I also found the pricing to be Vienna standard, therefore acceptable.
It was not as noisy as other big restaurants, so this was a bonus for me, plus with separated areas for the non smokers, they get top points for me.
I will be returning here very soon.

Das Saigon ist ein vietnamesisches Restaurant und befindet sich am Wiener Getreidemarkt im 6. ten Bezirk. An dieser Stelle mitten neben einer starkbefahrenen Straße erwartet sich der Gast jetzt kein besonders hervorstechendes asiatisches Restaurant. Besonders dann nicht, wenn er eher Hipster Asiaten wie das ON Market oder diverse neumodische Phở– Häuser gewohnt ist.
Im traditionellen Ambiente des Lokals wird meiner Ansicht nach aber sehr gut gekocht. Von der Vorspeise (sehr gute, unterschiedlich bestückte Frühlingsrollen) über die Hauptspeisen (Knuspriges Hühnerfleisch mit Zitronengras und Reis!) hinweg bis zu den Nachspeisen schmeckt es vorzüglich. Das Personal des Hauses wirkt sehr bemüht und bringt die raffiniert gewürzten Speisen souverän an den Tisch.
Alles in Allem war es ein sehr schöner Abend im Saigon und ich kehre gerne wieder an diesen Ort zurück.

Delicious food, excellent service, and a quiet and calm atmosphere make this the perfect place to choose for dinner after a long day.
I went with a group of 10 for the third stop on our Unilocal Vietnamese Food Tour. Even with a large group, the service was fast, attentive, and extremely friendly.
I had my usual Vietnamese dish (commonly called Bo Bun) of pork and crispy spring rolls over top of a large bowl of vermicelli noodles and shredded lettuce, with a light broth at the bottom of the bowl. This is #100 on the menu. It was very delicious and got better the farther down I went. I recommend mixing the ingredients very well before beginning so that you cover all of the component with that yummy broth!
After dinner, they brought us some complimentary bowls of coconut water with tapioca, honey, and banana in it. A nice light finish to the meal!
Its convenient location between MQ/​Mariahilf and Karlsplatz/​Naschmarkt give you no excuse not to try out this lovely restaurant.

A great Vietnamese restaurant, where almost half of the customers are actually Vietnamese… Which always is a good sign of authenticity.
The local itself is well laid out and beautiful, the staff is discrete but friendly and efficient.
As for the food, it is good, fresh and tasty! The sauce might be a bit fat but all in all it remains very healthy. ;)
For lunch they have Mittagsmenüs: for a very good price you have a soup or a salad (the sesame pasta on top of the cuncumbers is a great idea!), a main course and a small dessert.
I will definitely be back for more’

You ever eat Phở, and then that you have found magic potion that keeps you healthy? Well then you are going to love this place.
Menu is pages and pages long. That’s not always a good thing, but you know, its the typical Chinese restaurant scare; too many things, nothing specially good. Turned out at the end not to be the case. We had two starters; fresh rolls and soy bean salad. Yes soy bean salad (think green papaya salad, which they also had on the menu). Fresh rolls were not so special.
However, my duck plate and the soups were AMAZING, and quite large. Phở, without oyster sauce, you have chicken, beef, sea food options. Service is friendly, pretty quick, hits the spot. You can pay about 6 euros a starter (not very large), and 9 to 13 Euros a plate/​soup.
Place itself looks not so elegant, but when you have good soup, who cares, as long as its clean.
Toilet, I cannot remember, so that is a good sign (nothing specially wrong)
Close to Karlzplatz, you can walk 5 minutes or so from there.
Highly recommend for the soup, although the plate was also good too.

Had lunch at Saigon. The reviews were spot on. Had cold rolls as a starter, then came a free salad (like a thick coleslaw), then my noodle soup with tofu and veg. It was massive and I wished I had skipped the starter. Had oolong tea with my meal and the whole thing came to about 13Euros. I wished they had thicker and/​or hotter hot sauces (and hoisin would have been perfect) but for the price, the restaurant was clean, service was fast and they took credit cards. I would recommend for a fast, filling, inexpensive meal.

Ich war nicht sonderlich begeistert vom Saigon. Die Bedienung war zwar schnell und freundlich, das Essen war jedoch weder sehr schmackhaft noch wirklich eine große Portion. Hätte mir etwas mehr erwartet.

In our four day excursion to Vienna, we ate here twice.
This place is really nice looking. Vietnamese restaurants in the U.S. are rarely this fancy, with table cloths, carpet, and fancy chairs. The non-​smoking section is right when you walk in, unlike some restaurants that force you to walk through the smoke just to get to the non-​smoking section.
Compared to the U.S. or even Berlin, the food here is a tad expensive. I tried the crispy duck noodle soup during my first visit, which is 9.50. It was worth it. I don’t know how they manage to make duck drenched in broth maintain its crispy skin, but they did. It was perfect. My only minor complaint is that they used those squiggly yellow noodles, when my friends and I assumed we were getting vermicelli. Oh well. The second time I visited I got the crispy duck lunch special for 7 euro. It came with rice, big pieces of crispy duck, sauce, soup, and the house dessert. The rice wasn’t traditional Vietnamese broken rice and the house dessert was just mango juice with bits of tapioca, but it was still enjoyable. The crispy duck with rice was good, but not as good as I remember it in soup form.
I agree with Marlene, this place is good for groups. We didn’t have to wait for a table either time we visited, and the waiters spoke English.

Constantly good quality food. I love the cold Vietnamese spring rolls and the variety of soups they have. Prices are not so bad if you consider that everything is really nice looking and clean whereas many other Vietnamese restaurants are dirtholes…
I like it and have been a customer for maaaany years. Good for groups too, they have these tables with a rotating plate in the middle so that you can easily share.

Dieses vietnamesische Restaurant hat mich wirklich begeistert!
Die Küche schickt wirklich erstklassiges Essen raus, recht üppige Portionen (vor allem die Suppen) und der Service ist spitze — sehr freundlich, Sonderwünsche sind kein Problem und werden gerne berücksichtigt!
Die äußerst umfangreiche Speisekarte ist reich bebildert, wer nicht alles lesen will lässt einfach die Spontaneität entscheiden — oder den knurrenden Magen, je nachdem ;)
Anfangs könnte man meinen, die Preise sind etwas höher angesetzt, aber meiner Meinung nach sind es 1. die hervorragenden Speisen wirklich wert und 2. soll man die Portionen erst mal verdrücken!
(Und wer dann noch immer nicht satt ist — und auch jeder andere — bekommt noch eine lecker Gratisnachspeise: aber nicht die üblichen Lychees! Lasst euch überraschen!)

Der Name des Lokals schreckt ja eigentlich zuerst ab und ist nicht wirklich einfallsreich.
Das Essen ist dafür umso besser und ich wurde nie enttäuscht. Die Nudelsuppen sind sehr frisch und schmecken gut. Ich denke, dass es nicht viele vietnamesiche Lokale gibt, die authentisch kochen.
Die fritierten Gerichte sind mir etwas zu fett, aber das liegt in der Natur der Sache. Das Ambiente könnte etwas Politur vertragen, aber da sind die meisten «alteingesessenen» asiatischen Lokale nicht viel besser. Das Service ist sehr nett und bemüht.

köstliches und umfangreiches Angebot an MIttagsmenü — im Vergleich zum a la carte auch erschwinglich…
aber egal ob Mittagsmenü oder a la carte, das Essen ist hervorragend, die Auswahl kann überfordern — aber man hat ja die Zeit, be jedem Besuch etwas neues zu probieren.
Es wird sehr würzig gekocht… gerne verwendetes Kraut: frischer Koriander.
die Bedienung ist sehr auf das Wohl der Gäste bedacht und aufmerksam. Das Interieur lädt zum Bleiben ein.

Stimmt, schaut von außen aus wie ein üblicher (übler) Asiate, anfangs dachte ich, Chinarestaurant, mir sagte dann ein Freund, Vietnameisch und zwar ziemlich gut, traute der Aussage nicht recht und ging dann trotzdem hin.
Hat alles ziemlich gut geschmeckt, die Suppen groß, die Würzung steil, die Preise ok, die Gemütlichkeit?, irgendwie bleib ich bei keinem Asiaten viel länger als das Aufessen der Speisen dauert hocken, jetzt kann man ja anschließend nicht einmal mehr eine rauchen, bei Tisch, aber mich ernähren geh ich dort jederzeit wieder hin.

Gestern Abend wollte man vietnamesisch essen und etwas Neues ausprobieren. Nach einem erfolgslosen Anlauf vor vielen Monaten sollte es «The Flying Duck’s» in der Amerlingstraße werden — erfolgslos insofern, als ich trotz Falter-​Rezension im Kopf und wiederholtem Vorbeifahren mit dem 13A keine Kontaktadresse im Netz finden konnte (nicht mal auf der Falter Webseite). Seltsam. Ich wollte Im Netz sind doch alle vertreten — auch solche, die es nicht sein möchten, und sowieso alle Lokale, die es gubt, gegen hat und geben wird. Man will also spontan hingehen. «Demnächst öffnet hier eine Pizzeria» ist neben der Tafel mit den letzten Menüs und eine Kopie besagter Falter-​Rezension zu lesen.
Also hin zum Saigon, das zwar nicht der Szene-​Vietnamese schlechthin ist, aber für alle, die das Saigon im 16. Bezirk kennen, eine solide Institution in Sachen Vietnam-​Küche. Die Speisekarte neigt stark zur Unendlichkeit. Zuerst konzentriert man sich auf den eigenen Magen: er sendet Hunger-​Signale, es soll also eine Hauptspeise werden. Dann konzentriert man sich auf die Bilder: wenig Ausgefallenens, nichts Umwerfendes, so der erste Eindruck. Also nochmal durch, wir werden schon das richtige finden. Nicht alles ist abgebildet, es heißt also: die zweite Spalte ohne Bilder auch beachten. Nichts wirklich Umwerfendes, aber weiterhin Konzentration, zum Quatschen haben wir noch genügend Zeit… Getränke werden bestellt und gebracht, es wird langsam Zeit. Wo sind aber die tollen Speisen, die ich vom anderen Saigon kenne? Dann weiß ich wieder, worin der Trick liegt: kleine Suppen und Vorspeisen müssen her!
Gleich werden mehrere bestellt. Meine scharfe Schrimps-​Suppe ist im Geschmack viel würziger und interessanter als es klingt. Die Schimps auf Süßkartoffeln und der Vietnamesische Salat schmecken hervorragend. Bei der Freundin kommt eine Welle der Urlaubserinnerungen hoch: so schmeckt es in Vietnam.
Langweiliges Ambiente hin oder her, nur eine einfache Feststellung: hier können sie kochen!

Das erste Mal als ich das Saigon bemerkt habe, hab ich zu meiner Freundin gesagt, dass ich hier nie reingehen würde. Es sieht einfach nicht sehr einladend aus. Es ist unscheinbar, fordert kaum auf es zu betreten. Am Rückweg haben wir unsere Füße doch in die vietnamesischen Räumlichkeiten gestellt, aber nur um die Toilette zu benutzen. Doch da ist mir die im Gegensatz zum Außenzustand, sehr gemütliche und nette Einrichtung aufgefallen.
Das Personal war auch liebenswert und freundlich, und vor allem roch es einfach wunderbar.
Somit habe ich meine Aussage von vorhin wieder zurückgenommen.
Es zählen hald doch nur die inneren Werte.
Und eines Tages war es dann soweit, ich verabredete mich im Saigon.
Die Speisekarte ist supa, sehr breit gefächerte Auswahl, in der vor allem die Suppen hervorstechen! Deshalb hab ich gleich eine bestellt.
Und diese sind auch wirklich zu empfehlen, aber Vorsicht, hier ist eine Suppe keine Vorspeise sondern ein vollwertiges Hauptgericht. Dementsprechend groß sind die Portionen!
Und leckerrrrr!
Was ich besonders toll finde, sind die Gewürze, die verwendet werden, angeblich werden die auch direkt aus dem Vietnam importiert. Aroma pur.
Und ein ganz tolles Qualitätsmerkmal: ein Haufen frischer Kräuter! Noch mehr Aroma.
Zusätzlich haben die Köche einfach echt was drauf!
Super Restaurant, Vietnam ist toll! Und vergesst nicht, beurteilt ein Restaurant niemals nach seinem Äusseren!

Wie lange gibt’s das Saigon eigentlich schon? Das erste Mal war ich ca. 2003 dort. Freut mich wirklich sehr, dass das Geschäft noch immer so gut läuft. Geschmacklich hat die Küche schon relativ vieles an die regionalen Präferenzen adaptiert. Trotzdem ist die typisch vietnamesische Note vorhanden = wenig Gewürze, viele Kräuter, viel Eigengeschmack der jeweiligen Zutaten hervorheben.
Ist schon klar, dass — je nach Bestellung — das eine oder andere ⁰⁸⁄₁₅ schmeckt (wenn es denn auch eine 08/​15-​Speise ist wie zB knusprige Ente hihi). Wenn schon, dann die Grillente. Ich komme nie über eine schöné Portion vietnamesischer Reisnudeln «Ph» hinaus, weil das so viel ist. Unbedingt auch die Reispapierrollen probieren.
Freundlicher Service, übersichtlich und relativ modern eingerichtet, Top-​Lage, Preis-​Leistung gut, solide 4 Sterne von mir.

Wir waren am Tag vor Silvester im Saigon, nachdem Reiseführer wie auch andere Mitglieder das Restaurant positiv bewertet hatten. Da wir zu viert nicht reserviert hatten, bekamen wir zum Glück den letzten freien Tisch des Lokals zugewiesen. Alle hatten Suppen als Vorspeise gewählt, die in der Qualität gut, aber alle lauwarm an den Tisch kamen. Die Hauptspeisen waren in der Qualität sehr unterschiedlich: eine Ente war geschmacklich deutlich durchschnittlich analog anderer Asiaten, ein Huhn mit Zitronengras aromatisierter Sauce war lauwarm und eher süß säuerlich angemacht; ein Basilikum Huhn war geschmacklich eher unausgewogen. Die reine Quantität war auch nicht üppig: zu Gunsten einer üppigen Tellerdekoration, die in den meisten Fällen nicht gegessen wird (Karotte roh, Tomate, glatte Petersilie, Salat ohne Dressing) und auch nicht zu asiatischen Gerichten passt, darf ruhig zugunsten des Gerichts variiert werden. Schlussendlich war der Reis angekocht. Der Service war gegen 21.30 Uhr eher mit dem Eindecken der Tische beschäftigt; der Blick für den Gast ging verloren. Wir verließen das Lokal mit eher gemischten Gefühlen.

Das Saigon ist DIE Alternative zum um die Ecke gelegenen Ramien. Es sind zwar beide sehr gute asiatische Lokale, der Unterschied ist aber das das Saigon nicht hip sondern eher konservativ geführt ist, die Preise ein wenig höher sind und es wesentlich ruhiger zugeht. Gewissermassen das Ramien für alt gewordene :-)
Der direkte Vergleich: die grossen Suppenteller haben beide, im Ramien sind die Nudeln geschmacksstärker gewürzt, im Saigon funktioniert das Service besser, das Ramien ist zwar modern eingerichtet, dafür herrscht im Saigon mehr Ruhe — das Ramien wird mittags ja regelmässig zum Hexenkessel.
Schön eine wirkliche Alternative um die Ecke zu haben!

Ein Indikator für die Qualität eines Lokals ist die Zahl und die Zusammensetzung der Gäste. Da sich im Saigon auch viele asiatische Kunden tummeln, dachte ich mir beim Blick durchs Fenster, dass es so schlecht nicht sein kann. In Kombination mit der Empfehlung eines Freundes gute Voraussetzungen für ein schönes Abendessen.
Und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht: Das Restaurant bietet vietnamesische Küche von hoher Qualität zu einem wirklich guten Preis-​Leistungsverhältnis.
Von Frühlingsrollen als Vorspeise über das klassische Hühnercurry bis zum gebratenem Rindfleisch mit Frühlingszwiebeln und Zitronengras können ich und meine Freunde nur positives berichten: Gut gewürzt, erfreulich abgestimmte Schärfe und ordentliche Portionsgröße. Aber auch der Rinderspieß, dessen Bestandteile man selbst in Reispapier mit allerlei Zutaten zu kleinen Päckchen formt und dann mit Genuß verspeist, war wirklich gut gelungen. Dazu gibts Saigon-​Bier und zum Abschluss einen Grünen Tee mit Milch.
Alles in allem eine gute Adresse zwischen Museumsquartier und Secession. Mittags gibt es Menüs, die ich wohl demnächst auch ausprobieren werde
