I originally purchased my wedding dress in New York and was looking for somewhere local to have my dress altered. I was referred to Gala Bridal after a friend had her dress altered here.
I went in for my first appointment and the seamstress advised me to try on crinoline underneath my dress to make the bottom fuller (I wore a strapless dropped waist Eve of Milady). After my first fitting I asked what the total estimate for the work would be. I was quoted $ 350 – 400, which seemed par with their competitors.
I drove from Toronto to Brampton for FIVE fittings. Everytime I arrived she would say I lost weight and she would need to take it in. These 5 visits were in the span of a month and a half so I can’t imagine I lost a lot of weight between visits and when I would weigh myself I weighed the same.
I went in for my last fitting and I wanted to settle up my bill. The total was now $ 450 and they told me it would be an additional $ 80 for the crinoline rental!!! At no point was I informed the crinoline was not included in the final price which was $ 50 over my quote anyways. I told her I could not afford the extra expense because it was the week before our wedding and so I tried the dress on without the crinoline. .. it was way too long. She told me she would not touch the hemline because it was too much work and I either had to wear it long or rent the crinoline.
After much hassle she reluctantly waived the charge for the crinoline rental (which you can BUY for less than $ 30 online).
Overall the experience was much more stressful than it needed to be but the work done on the dress was good. Just make sure you ask about hidden charges if you decide to do work here.
