Triple A Fresh Produce

I bought 3 apples today. 3 different varieties to compare them all. All 3 appeared to be good from the outside. All 3 were rotten or partially rotten inside, one of them had a worm. I wasn’t willing to check all of them more thoroughly for worms, but all 3 were bad apples. Coincidence?
I also noticed there was a hole in one of the apples under the sticker. Could be the farm (s) fault… or they probably buy cheap stuff the keep the prices low. I’ve bought apples down the street before and never had a problem, but 3 different varieties in one day.
This store has good hours and prices are lower than other produce stores, but I don’t know about quality. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for. Today I got rotten apples.

You know, I would love to keep my original review, but things are starting to go down hill here. the other day I bought a package of Lychee only to discover that every single fruit that wasn’t visible from the top of the package was rotten. I can’t help but feel that this was done intentionally, and I’m not impressed. I will be opening one up today if/​when I go back and having a word with the manager if I find that my package wasn’t the only one.

The best way to sum things up at Triple A is that it is everything you should expect from a Asian operated produce store. The fruits and veges are usually fresh depending on how you pick them. The prices are almost always better than that of Safeway and other giant retailers, *Except during big sales, and the things you can find here are usually fresher simply because a private owner would know how to pick their fresh produce compared to having shipments of things come in. Triple A has been around the area for quite some time and considering its proximity to Safeway, it must stand true that this is a great place for groceries.

I used to live in the neighborhood and loved coming to Triple A. It was always exciting to see what kinds of treats would be on sale at the front. I recently picked up organic yams for 50 cents a pound! Fragrant mini guavas, baby bananas, celeriac, fresh fennel, you never know what you would find on sale here.
I often see what I assume to be restaurant chefs shopping here judging from the amounts of food they buy.
I come for my Asian veggies and fruits. My only gripe is that they don’t stock Californian garlic. I’m not a fan of the mesh bags from China. They also have a decent amount of kitchen pantry staples including some unexpected treasures. Sometimes I would find some soft corn small tortillas. Hard to find in this city and at a fraction of the price of the brand name hard corn tortillas at the big box store across the street. They even started stocking some impeccably fresh meat from dollar meats, so there is little need to go elsewhere.
And the staff are great. When I was pregnant, I would sometimes chat with the manager, a Vietnamese guy. When I had my baby, he gave me a papaya to make fish and papaya soup, a traditional soup to help new mothers recover from childbirth.
I’ve since moved away, but I still come back every once In a while to my favorite neighborhood grocery store. If you’re lucky enough to live nearby, you should definitely check it out.

I always head over the Triple A before hitting Safeway when it is shopping day. The produce is a fraction of the price and the variety almost rivals my favorite Commercial Drive markets. They also often have a beautiful selection of potted and fresh flowers to choose from. The pantry section of the shop is a good place to find those more exotic ethnic ingredients that aren’t available in chain stores and the dried spices are about $ 2 cheaper on average than right next door at Safeway. It’s heaven for a frugal shopper like myself that doesn’t always have time to leave my North Burnaby neighborhood.

For everything that the nearby Sfwy lacks in the way of fruit and vegetables, this store makes up for. There are over 9 kinds of Apples just for one example, and I even found a Plantain! Ever had fried Plantain? It’s friggen awesome. Usually found in Cuban or Jamaican cuisine, it’s related to the Banana.
I got a large bag of produce for less than 7 bucks!
I got a huge Yam for 37cents also.
SO… how come Yam Fries are such a ripoff at bars?
Maybe they need to shop here!
