The Art Gallery of Calgary (The AGC) is a non-collecting, public contemporary art gallery and a registered charitable organization. The AGC is dedicated to presenting contemporary art exhibitions and providing quality art education programs and experiences for people of all ages. The AGC does not seek to acquire a permanent art collection.

Historique

Fondé en 1977.

The Art Gallery of Calgary was originally known as the Muttart Public Art Gallery. Founded in 1977, when 14 artist associations representing over 500 local artists worked with the Calgary Public Library to open a gallery in the Memorial Park Library. The renovations were funded by the Gladys and Merrill Muttart Foundation.

Over the next 20 years, the Muttart gained a national profile as a leading Western Canadian public art gallery. The Muttart was also renowned for its innovative art education programs.

In 2000, the Muttart built on these successes by moving to two historic buildings in the heart of Calgary’s downtown on Stephen Avenue Walk, where the organization adopted its current name: The Art Gallery of Calgary.

Today, The Art Gallery of Calgary combines the strong grassroots foundation of the Muttart Public Art Gallery with curatorial expertise to showcase contemporary art to Calgarians and guests.

The kind of art I’m used to looking at is typically made in the foam on top of my latte. That should give you an idea on how much I frequent art galleries. It’s fun every now and again, but often, it takes an event to get me into one… at which point I find myself perusing the walls with my eyes as I mingle my way through a party. Which is exactly what I did on Monday night.
In terms of an event space, the AGC has a lovely layout. Great mood and setting, light coloured walls, four different levels. The top floor being my favourite, though it got a wee bit warm up there… the only thing of note if you’re planning an event here is that the food seemed to flow from the upstairs down. If you’re using the entire space, you may want to find a way to ensure a good portion of your food also trickles down to the lower levels.

It was great to be able to visit the Art Gallery because they have a late night once a month — on Thursdays, they stay open past business hours so that those of us who have to work during the day can visit. Excellent and thank you.
But that said, I have to admit that I wasn’t super impressed. Maybe it’s because I had a high expectation or maybe it’s because there just isn’t that much art here. Only a couple of exhibits and while they were interesting, they weren’t all that.

For an art gallery carrying the name of our city, I hardly ever go here.
In fact, I’ve actually been to more wine and cheese style fundraisers here than I have to see art.
Because they seem to do more promo for those than their exhibitions.
I’ve seen a couple of stand-outs over the years, the most recent being Judy Chicago, but AGOC doesn’t seem to do ANY marketing for what’s coming through.
The AGOC is agreat space and is right on Stephen Ave, but unless I check their website, I (and many more like me) don’t have much of an idea as to what’s being exhibited and in turn, no reason to go.
