Delta Calgary South

Now that I live in Edmonton I decided to «slum» it in southern Calgary on my visits. Since downtown hotel rates are $ 300 plus per nights, we decided to stay at the delta south.
I was pleasantly surprised with our stay even though it was only one night. We didn’t check in til 9pm but we greeted quickly and notified that our standard room had been upgraded! They informed us that we had 24 hour access to the lounge and immediately gave us water bottles. The only catch is that the upgrade was in the atrium building across the way. No big deal– it was only a 5 min walk.
The rooms were older but renovated. We had a large king bed, a couch, fridge, microwave and a spacious bathroom! We checked out the lounge just before bed and they have a full latte machine, fruits and refreshments. We went back for breakfast and they served hot breakfast as well as pastries. They even had smoothie shots!
If you don’t mind the 20 commute downtown, this it a great stay for $ 200 a night.

I stay in hotels A LOT for work. Have stayed in this hotel twice and won’t stay there again. The rooms are not cleaned that well. The pillows are hard. But worse that any of that… the service is not up to par… actually far from par.
For example, was there on a Saturday night and was awoken on Sunday morning at 9:30am (the only day I get to sleep past 6am) with the housekeeping staff knocking on my door. She even came in the room. I called down to ask what was going on. Was told it was all my fault because I didn’t put the «do not disturb sign» on my door and actually housekeeping starts at 9am… on a SUNDAY… good grief!

The hotel was okay, the room was spacious and clean-​ish. The entire place looks dated and shabby — tears in the wallpaper, scuffs on the wall, and beige, beige, beige… hotel rooms are always boring, but this one was a study in sepia… I thought I’d gone colour blind. Staff is EXCEPTIONAL, friendly, happy, lovely people. Tried the food in both the lounge and Boomtown and found it flavourless and completely uninspired… seriously, how do you make a burger taste that bland? And why would you do that to an innocent piece of meat? Is that meat on there, or cake? All I could say when I finished my meals was «Meh. I guess that was sustenance». I agree with the guy that said it felt more like a road trip motel than a hotel. I’d be fine with it and recommend it if I was paying less than $ 100/night…but that isn’t the case. Won’t stay there again.

A hotel located not too far nor too close to downtown Calgary! Delta on southland Rd is right off the main strip and is pretty central to the nearby malls, plenty of plazas, and food options. The vicinity is well maintained and the staff are very friendly and personable.
The rooms were a nice surprise, at times the exterior design of the hallways didn’t compliment the contemporary décor of the rooms… which was a nice surprise to me! Large work desk with various electrical sockets for you electronics, large TV, beautiful washrooms with device that could even heat up the floors :)
Our room included hors d’oeuvres daily from 5 pm to 8. From pizza, cured meats, and cheese to bruschetta, veggie and perogies are served. There is also the option to order alcohol at a small charge. In the morning they serve a warm breakfast (bacon, eggs, potatoes along with some continental options served on the side.

So, the Delta South is pretty huge. Two buildings huge. The Tower and then the Atrium. I was in the Atrium. Third floor to be exact, room with a balcony that overlooked the restaurant. The concept is great. The reality is less so. I woke up Thursday morning unsure if I had sleepwalked my way into the restaurant. It was loud. Saturday night with a wedding going on downstairs was also loud. I went to sleep to the sweet dulcet tones of Jason Derulo encouraging me to Wiggle.
Other than the noise, the room was great. King sized bed was super comfortable. The «smart desk» with the hook ups to connect laptop to TV was a nice touch. I watched a lot of Netflix. Wifi was reliable.
We got a 50% discount on the breakfast buffet. At $ 10, totally worth it. For $ 20 I would have been sorely disappointed and gone down the road to Smitty’s. I also went to Boomtown a couple times. Prime rib night was excellent. I had the shrimp ‘po boy for lunch once and that was meh. The shrimp were good but the baugette was meh, and there wasn’t much taste to write home about. The steak I had for dinner one night was the most disappointing — at a $ 30 price point I expect at least some flavour. No dice.

This hotel is average. I’ve stayed over 10 nights in this hotel, so I have a decent perspective of what it is like over time. Unfortunately, I’ll be booking elsewhere for upcoming business trips, as the negatives just outweigh the positives as a business traveler used to top notch facilities and service.
The staff is very friendly and accommodating, but the facilities are lacking. There are two sides to the hotel, on opposites sides of the street and connected by a skybridge. Check-​in only occurs in one of the sides, which means you have to park, check-​in, and then drive across the street if you are in one of the Atrium rooms. The atrium side is the newer/​updated side and the rooms were spacious (King with sitting area). Level 2 has tubs, while level 3 has showers. There are two elevators in the atrium — a glass one that overlooks the atrium, and the second which is tiny, dirty and used by the staff as well as guests. It can be awkward getting in just after the trash cart came out, or almost bumping into the service trolleys carrying laundry. Using the stairs can also be a maze depending on which one you use; the route leads through back of house office corridors before winding around to the lobby. The layout is just inconvenient and odd. The atrium restaurant is inside the hotel, while the Boomtown pub entrance is outside with no covered path to the door.
My stays have been average, but my last visit was poor. The room service food is adequate, with a few dishes that are good/​memorable. I got moldy raspberries at breakfast, and was not given a beverage with my in-​room meal. Internet is slow at best, but if you are in a corner room (like me) it will not work at all depending on where you sit in the room (had the same problem at the Delta Banff, too). This is unacceptable as a business traveler, and I missed a deadline because of poor internet connection.
My room door did not lock when the door shut, as it needed to be pulled closed and the handle tested before it would lock. My co-​worker complained of mold in her shower. My room was not serviced on one of my days there.
Overall, there are just better hotels out there for the money, and I would rather stay somewhere with reliable internet, consistent food/​service and up-​to-​date facilities with a logical layout.
The manager at the hotel did offer to provide complimentary room upgrades, club access and dinner for two at my next stay to compensate for the mistakes, but as a Delta Gold member I already get two complimentary upgrades at checkin and I typically eat dinner out (paid by my employer). The gesture is appreciated but of little use.

worst hotel experience ever. first time i stayed here a couple weeks ago, the elevator broke and i was stuck until a 3^rd party company could make it there and get me out. when the doors opened, there wasn’t even a hotel representative there to be hospitable in the least bit. even the guy getting the doors open was on the roof of the elevator. I had an event going on in one of their ballrooms that i was headed down to with the A/​V equipment for the presentation so the other staff couldn’t even do anything without me there.
unfortunately we had already booked another event for this same hotel and on our arrival tonight, the front desk guy was a real ass hole which is a whole other story. oh, and the rooms are tiny.

I feel completely ripped off. For the price of the room, and the value I received, there was quite an imbalance. I could have stayed at some budget motel and had a nicer and more updated room that was actually cleaned properly. My room was a filthy DUMP.
It took forever for me to get into my room because the cards they gave me were having issues opening the doors.
The room was made but I doubt it was ever vacuumed. I saw hair on the bathroom floor and they were definitely not my pubes on that floor.
The mess of wires and power extension cables made it very hazardous and a possible fire hazard.
The tub re-​caulk looked like some 3 year old did it with his thumbs. It was horribly done and so obviously sloppy and totally unprofessional.
The bathroom sink had problems with the hot and cold water. I almost scalded my hands and face when the water suddenly turned into scalding hot water when I was initially using lukewarm water.
The shower curtain just stunk of mildew.
I had problems keeping the temperature cool in the room. Although the setting was at the coldest temperature, the heat in the room kept creeping higher.
The toilet has not been scrubbed and it was obvious.
It appears the cleaning crew was an entire Filipino family who congregated outside my door chitchatting the entire time that they were supposed to be cleaning. So much for sleeping.
Do not eat the the hotel-​recommended pub next door called Boomtown. It was the most revolting food I have ever tasted. The candied maple bacon was a grease-​stick and more like jerky. The chicken was drier than Styrofoam. Do not order the «calamari», unless you like an entire slab of plain chewy squid.
Nice front desk staff though.

This was a four star experience without the price of a four star hotel. Inside the hotel is absolutely beautiful! The color scheme is bright and there is lots of windows letting in the light and exposing guests to some beautiful views of Calgary.
I ate at both the atrium café as well as Boom town pub which is across the parking lot and found the food at both to be excellent. The only advice I would offer about food is if you are partaking in the breakfast buffet to get downstairs early as it does get a bit picked over and the food in the heating trays does dry out a bit from the lids being opened and closed and being exposed to the air. The restaurant staff is very attentive and it was rare that I had to look around to try and locate somebody for a drink refill as they were very on top of guests needs.
The hotel features two pools. The one by the atrium café is beautiful but very shallow and could not be used for actual swimming. The main pool features a water slide which is great for little ones but I would be reluctant to let any kids under ten swim unsupervised as there is no lifeguard and I saw a lot of unsafe behavior with kids trying to climb up the slide and going down headfirst.
The front desk staff is in my opinion what makes this hotel. They are very friendly and bend over backwards to make your stay enjoyable. We got wine and chocolate dipped strawberries one day and the gentleman working that day gave us a discount because he saw I was unhappy when my boyfriend went to order them.
If your in the Calgary area definitely consider giving this place a try. It is close to a C train station making it easy to get around the city and check out the sights and sounds of Calgary.

Delta is a large chain of 40+ hotels in many Canada cities and none in the United States. As such a large chain, they know how to operate and provide services as well as any Hilton or Marriott property. But they are affiliated with neither, which as a Marriott Platinum I find to be a bummer.
But once we get past that, it’s a nice property. Nice location on MacLeod Trail and a short walk to the Southland C-​Train station and a Wal-​Mart across the street. Ample parking with those power outlets for the colder weather. Attached restaurant and breakfast buffet. I think the breakfast might be a bit expensive, but my customer has vouchers so I don’t know how much it really costs.
Oh, and there’s a massive indoor pool. WITH A WATERSLIDE! (Oops, that was the kid in me, slipping out.)
I’ve stayed in rooms in the «tower» section and in the «atrium» section of the property. All were clean, quiet, spacious and had all the bells and whistles of full-​service hotels. Wi-​fi is now free for all, though you have to re-​authenticate every couple of hours. No biggie, it works fine other than it gets slow in the evening hours. Comfortable beds, nice bathroom, big screen television, room service, etc. What’s not to like?
I had a great experience and if I were to be in the Calgary area again (and the Marriotts are sold out), I would absolutely stay here again.

Company Christmas party was held last evening at this hotel — second year I have attended. Well, lets start with the parking — plentiful and well cleared from the last snow which is we are dressed up in our Sunday-​best. The main lobby and public spaces are dated and not as ‘refined’ as one would find in a downtown hotel — has more of a road-​trip motel feel rather than a true ‘hotel’.
The room which are function was in happened to be located on the lower level a.k.a. the dungeon — there is something about descending down into an area opposed to being on grade or going ‘up’.
Lets get to the food. Perhaps, it was the price point which our company chose but the food was subpar in quality and creativity. The prime-​rib was too fatty and the turkey was ‘mechanically formed’ which was very apparent from its consistent form and lack of texture — UGH! The sole bright spot in the food arena was the horseradish — the Delta South has the best horseradish which will even put a lover of the stuff on their ass — yum!
Two final points:
1.) The servers did a great job as they hustled the whole night.
2.) The Delta South does not have a designated driver program in which they would choose to serve complimentary pop or juice to those that make the decision not to drink — even a drop — the charge for a soft drink was $ 2.75 for a small 8oz glass. When the Manager was approached and asked he was tongue-​tied and could not make a decision.
Come on Delta you can do better!

I hate to say this but this is one of the few substandard delta hotels I have stayed at. The room was tight and the lay out is very confusing. The parking is outside and I didn’t feel comfortable parking in the area. The front desk staff was not very polite. One of the few hiccups in the immaculate service offered at Delta hotels. Will I stay here again hmm I have to consider other options first. 2.5 Stars.

This review is solely on the Delta’s Easter brunch.
Good brunch, lots of options … like most buffets, not the highest quality, but definitely satisfying for an early afternoon of copious feasting.
The staff is actually very friendly and very accommodating. I thought of giving the place 4 stars based on their performance, but I think primary importance in the rating is the food itself.
