Jungle Pets Store

I really wanted to like this place because the staff is friendly, and I was optimistic about having a exotic pet store in Dartmouth. The store is rather small, unkempt, and most of the cages/​enclosures are very small.
But, considering it IS a pet store I was some what prepared for the condition. And some how justified making a purchase by my assumption that the level of care that the animals were receiving was beyond that of other stores… I was wrong.
Being a reptile lover, I brought home a plated lizard as a new addition and upon first inspection he appeared healthy. After some handling and care I discovered that he was COVERED in mites. (Which he is currently being treated for)
Upon calling the store to let them know that they have a mite problem (if one lizard has an infestation, it’s an easy to assume that any others that were housed close to him do aswell, including their show reptiles!) they shrugged off my complaint, and replied with: «Oh yeah… mites are pretty common in pet stores»… While this might be true I could only hope that as «animal lovers» they would want to make ALL of their animals as happy and healthy as possible.
They gave me no indication that they would be treating the other reptiles, and treated my concern like it was no big deal. Obviously, they don’t care about the concerns of their customers or the comfort of their animals.
Suffice to say I will never purchase anything from this store again.

Went to their new location on Tacoma Drive in Dartmouth… it’s very small. No to little ventilation in a store that small packed with fish, rodents, reptiles and birds makes for a VERY smelly experience.
I also didn’t like the fact that they used pine shavings for the rodent’s bedding. Rats are prone to respiratory problems and pine chips are very bad for this. When brought up to the staff they didn’t seem to care.
Cages are small and packed above acceptable capacity for most of the animals. I left the store feeling sick and sad. I will buy my turtle food elsewhere.

Need a bird, reptile or fish?
NL Jungle Pets is a fun, small store that sells birds, reptiles and fish. They focus on exotic animals but what surprised me and what separates them from other pet stores in the city, is that they also focus on animal education. They are setup to show off their animals at birthday parties, corporate events and other functions. It seems so obvious to marry animal education with a pet store. I am not sure if other stores do that but this is the only one I’ve seen that openly advertises it.
As for the store itself, its quite cramped. If you have claustrophobic tendencies, this might not be the place for you. They also smell like a pet store. But given the fact that it is a smaller store, the smell is that much more obvious.
The staff are very friendly and extremely helpful. But they also seem like they love what they do which I think is icing on the cake when it comes to customer service.
As for the pricing, its not that bad. They are pretty much the same as other pet stores but given the fact that this is a smaller chain that supports animal education, I’m more inclined to head here than some of the bigger ones.
I was surprised to find an exotic pet store in downtown Dartmouth. If you are in Halifax, its a short ferry ride over and then a one minute walk to get to the store. If you are a fan of reptiles, exotic birds or fish, NL Jungle Pets store is a great place to head to.
