Col Mustard’s Canteen

The one and only original canteen on 124! A must try place! My husband and i are regulars here and the food is consistently good. prices are reasonable for the high quality food and i recently tried out their dinner menu and its a whole new concept and everything looks and sounds so good! One of my favorite places on 124.

If you want a good sandwich, come here. Dont expect a cheap sandwich with weak toppings because that is not how the Colonel rolls. These sandwiches are amazing and there is a huge selection more than any other place you have been I promise.
I have placed orders over the phone and just popped in for a late-​evening sandwich and every time Im more than happy with the service and the food. I have never eaten in so I cannot atest to the noise level but I do know the people eating in are not by the door that is a bonus!
My faves are the Reuben, the Monte cristo, and the meatloaf.

This place is okay. Nothing to write home about.
A co-​worker really likes this place so I have been here several times.
I like the décor — bright and colourful but it is extremely loud. I think the wood floors are what causes it to be so darn loud.
The staff are not the friendliest and I find the food to be overpriced. Sandwiches are at least $ 12 dollars or so to start and are a la carte. No sides for that price.

We visit here every time we come to Edmonton. I suggest the Beef Dip. It is the best I have ever had.

I’ve tried three sandwiches on the menu, but only enjoyed one: the Peameal Bacon.
The sandwiches are gourmet, but overpriced. About $ 12 each, sides extra. A pop in a can is $ 3.50. The atmosphere is noisy.
Service has been adequate, at best. I’ve had to ask what the soup of the day was each time I’ve been in. Also, there seems to be a high staff turnover. The servers are young and unprofessional, especially in their dress.
I won’t to go back to this restaurant — even though I work nearby — after being patronised by a server who argued with me about my dirty wine glass instead of just dealing with it politely, even the manager got defensive. She told me that there was a problem with the refrigerator and that’s why the white wine had crud in it, as if serving bad wine is better than serving it in a dirty glass.

This place ain’t no Fife N’ Shuffle… If you want to go and stand in a line to get your own food and have a bunch of grumpy ladies slap your sandwich together for $ 6 bucks than have at er! If you want to enjoy a great lunch or dinner, in a great atmosphere, this is the place to go!
I personally love this place as everything is made so fresh. The problem I have is trying to figure out what I am going to order but I always have to start with a cup of soup. I am never disappointed! My husband always has the ceasar salad. the pita chip croutons are an awesome touch.
Favorite sandwiches… pressed tomato and boccocini (dont know how to spell it but it tastes great) cheese and the cajun chicken. Love Love Love the cheese pizza too, so fresh and lemony. If only I could get my husband to try something other than the club sandwich but he is hooked on it.
Can’t wait for the next visit!

A treasure for your senses and heaven in your belly.
I have a mad love affair with this place, and am doing my very best to try new places in the city. NOT that I get to eat out that often, but when I do… (OKAY — I’m not the dos equis man, but I think you get the point).
A cheery little canteen with absolutely fabulous soups, homemade pita chips for dipping in said soup (AND you can take away for later!), and the pressed sandwiches are super fun to get creative with! I like ordering a tuna melt and adding artichoke, grilled/​roasted red pepper, or extra tomatoes — it’s icing on the cake. Gives you a little creative control on your meal, taking what some might consider bla-​zay to BLING BLING on your tongue.
For me, I stick to ordering a cup of soup and a sandwich, rather than a bowl of soup plus. Either way, I always end up taking home a bit of sammie.
Great servers. Great coffees. Great food.
TIP: Not open mondays, and parking can be a pain, and I GUARANTEE that lunch time suits and skirts get this place bumpin’. Have patience. :)

Colonel Mustards is a total rip off, sandwiches are just average and not worth the exhorbitant pricing considering the small portions… I don’t understand how anybody can pay over $ 10 for a generic deli sandwich without even a side. Just awful value for bland breads, and skimpy non-​descript portions.
One is better off getting an Italian sandwich from the Italian center for $ 7, and some olives from the deli as an accompaniment.

We’ve been there for lunch and a quick pre-​show meal. Good service and good food both times.
The falafel pita was excellent. Large falafel with just the right amount of sauce. They were fried perfectly, and the texture was light and crumbly. I love a good falafel.
Sandwiches do not come with sides, but they are large. If you need a pickle or fries to complete your meal it will be pricier than you will find elsewhere, but the quality is excellent.
For our second visit we stuck with wine plus a few appetizers to share. The grilled radicchio, prosciutto & bocconcini rolls were complemented nicely with a smoky balsamic. The grilled veggie crostini were good, but not particularly amazing. The trio of dips comes with grilled flatbread. Looking back, it was a night on the grill. The dips were hummus (good, not too garlicky), tabouli (perfect and tasting like spring), and an odd BBQ-​sauce tasting red dip (not a fan).
Great funky ambiance in this converted space. I love the multiple-​levels and bold colours.
I’ll be back, and wish they we open on Sundays (the duchess is a good alternative).

I met up with a girlfriend for lunch at Col. Mustard’s last weekend on a Saturday around 3pm. First off, I was surprised at how quiet the restaurant was. I’ve been there before on weekends, and it’s always super packed. Maybe because it was 3pm, but I have to admit I did like the ambiance more than when it’s busy busy busy.
The food is really delicious here, and it is often hard for me to decide what to order. I’m always kind of indecisive in the first place, but, this place is also EXPENSIVE! For a sandwich place… The menu is also quite extensive, so there are lots of choices for all types of tastes. I ended up getting a half house salad ($ 5.95) — Greens with Tomato, Cucumber, Artichoke, Roasted Peppers, Basil, Croutons and House Vinaigrette (from their website), and an oven roasted tomato sandwich ($ 10.95) from the vegetarian portion of the menu — Tomatoes served cold with Asiago Cheese, Fresh Basil and Olive Oil on Loaf. Four of my favourite things! How could I go wrong?
The space is beautiful — nice colours, wide open space and relaxing. Good music playing in the background. The servers are generally chill and helpful. You can also order some (all?) of the menu items at the front counter for take out. After our meal, me and my friend grabbed some dolmades on the way out and they were the perfect dessert!

Lots of solid Unilocaler reviews drove me to try this restaurant for the first time today.
I’ll start with the good stuff.
Colonel Mustards is a beautifully designed, colourful, artsy restaurant that gives the place a unique and upbeat feel.
The downstairs washrooms, although out of the way, are spotless. Kinda cute how the doors down there are painted pink and blue, reminded me of elementary school!
The host and servers were gracious, friendly and courteous.
Colonel Mustard’s menu is a vast array of soups, salads, drinks, desserts and sandwich’s, sandwich’s and more sandwich’s! It’ll take you a good 10 minutes at least to size up their menu and decide on what you want. You’d never believe you could put so many things between two slices of bread until you’ve been here.
I ordered a Ruben sandwich ($ 11) and a tomato soup ($ 6).
Even though it was busy in their, my order arrived in less than ten minutes which was surprising.
Now the bad stuff…
Although the soup and sandwich were very tasty — they were unbelievably small. A small bowl of soup and a really small sandwich are a snack to me, not a meal. For $ 27 (including a drink and tip) I certainly didn’t get my money’s worth. I had buyers remorse when I walked out.
Male readers, I’m addressing you. Do not believe the Unilocaler reviews that claim that you will leave Colonel Mustards satisfied. Ain’t gonna happen. Those reviews were written by females. A 110 pound woman doesn’t have any where near the appetite a 200 pound man does, not even close.
I’m a man. No amount of pretty artwork or friendly servers are going to bring me back to a restaurant unless it fills my stomach to the brim and makes me leave the table with an «ah» feeling.
Colonel Mustard’s doesn’t cut the mustard in that regard.

Arrive hungry and you will be guaranteed to leave very, very full! The lunch menu here has many wonderful sandwich choices to salivate over. But the best part is when your order actually arrives at your table. These people really know how to make a superb sandwich. Fresh, tasty and very filling. As good as it gets!

Colonel Mustard’s, it was love at first sight between you and I. From your cozy interior or brightly coloured walls, to your friendly staff, to your massively enormous selection of sandwiches, call me a fan.
I was extra hungry so I ordered from the triple menu. It was definitely the right decision. My big turkey club filled my belly for the rest of the afternoon, and my satisfied my tastebuds.
Bonus: dine in or take out, if you’re in a rush!

thought it was a little over priced… taste a little to plain for me.
i expected more flavor in their pesto etc… loved their décor and
overall atmosphere but thats not a reason for me to return.

Brad’s menu is amazing. The press sandwiches should be the gold standard that all other pressed sandwiches are compared to. Keep it up Brad and Carla!

Colonel Mustards Canteen is a fabulous place for lunch. It specializes in sandwiches and quick lunches They provide sandwiches of all sorts, wraps and salads as well as few hot items like soup and other such things. When you walk in you’ll be greeted by the small deli section of the shop. It mainly consists of take away lunch and diner options like sandwiches, quiches, sheppards pie, as well as baking and dips. Their baked pita chips are amazing and I highly recommend them.
You’ll be surprised how far back the restaurant goes. The multi-​level floor ads to the 50’s inspired décor. One downside is that the washrooms are in the basement which makes for it difficult for anyone with mobility problems.
Get their early as they fill up quickly for lunch especially over the weekend.

Colonel Mustard’s by far has the largest selection of sandwiches I have ever seen on one menu. That is no surprise, since sandwiches are the specialty here. There are pressed sandwiches, traditional ones (tuna, turkey, ham and cheese), wraps, vegetarian selections, and even choices for the little guys (peanut butter — need I say more?).
I came here on a busy Saturday afternoon — the place was humming with customers — and was overwhelmed by my potential choices. Sardines on toast? Felafel? Chicken breast? I settled on the turkey dinner wrap, which was a filled with warm stuffing, cranberry sauce, and roast turkey. The turkey itself was cold, offset by the warmth of the stuffing, which made up the bulk of the wrap. It was definitely a homemade variety, at least.
I was joined for lunch by someone having a Monte Cristo. It was served extremely hot, yet the reaction to it was rather lukewarm. Something about the texture of the fillings.
The service is reasonably quick, and the ingredients are extremely fresh. However, the sandwiches are extremely expensive. The average price is around $ 10, and that is without any sort of side. You can get a soup or salad in the $ 5-​$ 8 range depending on size. Still, it is a colourful, quirky place to enjoy some comfort food, if you’re willing topay.

I have only had the sandwiches here once and they are quality!
The roasted tomato sandwich that they have is really good. I was hesitant to try it at first because it was tomato and no meat at all. I had to have another.
The restaurant is very nice with a unique design and the service is good as well. They make healthy food pretty appealing.

Colonel Mustard’s is an old favorite that I have been following for years through location changes, staff changes and menu changes. This is a Saturday favorite lunch spot after a morning at the Farmer’s Market or an afternoon putzing in the 124^th street area. I decided to break tradition last week and check it out on a Thursday lunch instead of the usual Saturday and as usual, I was impressed! I started with a bowl of their daily soup, a delicious and thick tomato, feta and spinach with an oven roasted large croûton which was perfect for dipping. I then had a House side salad for lunch which had artichokes, roasted red peppers, spinach, basil and small bits of pita in a vinaigrette dressing. I was full with just these two items, but couldn’t leave without grabbing a couple house made Peanut Butter balls and Dolmades for later.
The service here is usually good and although busy, I have never had to wait more than five minutes for a seat. They have sandwiches of all kinds which is their specialty. When I am feeling like I can eat a bit more I usually go for a Deli wrap or Asian Noodle Wrap. I also really like their beef dips and have been known to indulge in the odd Italian favorite! Their menu changes in the evening and I haven’t tried it yet, but I recommend the sandwich menu any day! Any day except Sunday or Monday that is as they are closed.
