The food at this place is OK but they have no customer service at all. I think they cook the food days ahead of time(maybe just my opinion) Not once the waitress came to ask if everything was good. We were seated right at the back and could see the fish in the fish tank. A large dead fish was on top of the water. The waitress was informed about it and her response was«I know»…, this took my whole appetite away. Plates of food were just dumped in front of everyone. We asked more than once for separate bills but they did not get it. When we paid we did not give any tip(really there was no service — so why do we have to give a tip) and the girl told us «you do not tip» … We explained that we did not get any service. Good Buddy will not see me again

Very surprised at the low ratings from fellow Unilocalers. The food was great with decent prices and the service was excellent. Would definitely return here on my next trip to Edmonton.

We order or go to Good Buddy on a regular business. It has standard Chinese food, plus more authentic items. Always busy and a great experience.

Ordered in tonight and probably one of the worst meals we had. The chicken balls/spring rolls were cold. The spring rolls soggy and had no flavor. The shanghai noodles tasted like cooking oil and nothing else. This meal was terrible and we will not be back. Everything was overpriced for the quality of food.

Awesome place. Staff are friendly and welcoming. They always remember us and treat us with kindness and respect. Food is usually very good and large portions — enough to take home and eat a whole meal the next day. We usually get the dinner for two, which would actually feed four. Comes with house soup at the beginning which I love. It warms me up and stimulates my appetite. Tea is included as well. They also included a lovely bean soup for dessert, which I always look forward to. There are many dishes to choose from with the dinner for two so we’ve gone back many times. This is definitely one of our go-to places. Also love the steam soy sauce chicken — white chicken served cold with a spicy sauce. Awesome. Pork spareribs with potato stew — awesome. Beef brisket with eggplant — I’m very big on eggplant :). Many choices to suit everyone. Finally, if you like tea, give the Hong Kong milk tea a try. Very good and very strong — will keep you going for the rest of the evening.

The quest to find the best fried noodles in Edmonton continues, this day I was at Good Buddy South for lunch. Having been to Good Buddy North, I have certain expectations, Good Buddy South is quite different from its northern sister restaurant; there is no big screen TV, there is no updated decors, there is no dim sum, there is no modern lightings. Its décor is dark and dated, dim sum carts are no where to be seen, the place looked like a traditional noodle joint and is in need of an update. When I first walked in, the one thing the surprised me is how dark the restaurant is. It took my eyes a minute or two to adjust to the dim environment when coming in from the daylight. The restaurant was very busy, it was completely full but they managed to squeeze me in somehow. The ladies ran around with plates of food(frequently delivering to the wrong table) but food were coming out of the kitchen supremely fast; they have one efficient kitchen. I ordered the Beef Brisket Lo Mein and the Dry Fried Chicken Hor Fun. If you look at the picture, you would notice that one thing is distinctly missing from the Lo Mein… WHEREISTHESAUCE? The brisket was as dry as dry can be, the flavour just wasn’t there; without the complimentary soup, it would not have been edible. I would not order it again. The Hor Fun on the other hand came fresh and hot. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to eat both dishes so I had it in to takeout box, the box was beyond full, they were not able to close it. The fried noodle portions here are gigantic. How did the hor fun taste? A disappointingly«below average». It wasn’t bad like the lo mein but it wouldn’t be up there with the better noodle joints in town. It was missing some of the traditional«wok hei», that smoky fried noodle smell. You can tell that the chef was in a hurry as among the darker soya sauce laced noodles are clumps of pure white noodles, the chef did not take the time to mix the noodles well. The chef just didn’t take the time to make that perfect plate of noodles. As Emeril Lagasse said: «you have to season both sides, nobody likes one sided flavoured foods». Value wise, this restaurant produces great value. Both plates of noodles add up to $ 20 and it was enough for me as lunch/dinner plus a light breakfast the next day. Leftover hor fun makes fantastic breakfasts, if you don’t believe me, try it yourself. I believe that the place is busy because of the tremendous value it provides its patrons. A bit of a warning, the entire restaurant has a single one-person restroom for each sex. When I was there a gentleman locked himself in for a full twenty minutes, as time progress, you can tell that the male population in the room became increasingly agitated. When he came out, half the male population in the room dashed for the bathroom. For a restaurant which seats about 100, a single one-person bathroom is grossly inadequate. Also, the bathroom needed cleaning badly… Would I return for noodles, probably not, there are better noodle joints near by. I would come for dinner one night to check out the non-noodle dishes, may be I would have better luck with those dishes.

I’m honestly shocked that this place has such a low rating! Every time I come to Edmonton, I always try to stop here and get food! I know this isn’t the original Good Buddy restaurant, but I prefer this one over the original. One of my personal favorite items on the menu is the pork fried rice. SOGOOD. Every time I’m here, the place is packed full of people. Again, I’m baffled as to why the reviews are so low. All the food I’ve had, has been very good. All white meat chicken, good pork, and alberta beef. The staff is friendly, and they get your food out as quickly as they can. It can get a little confusing when it’s packed full of people, and not everyone speaks perfect English, but these things are easily forgiven.

Ordered a chicken dish. What I got when I arrived home was something but NOT chicken. It was unlike any known meat have tried. I’m fairly certain it was some sort of illegal black market rat or cat. Please do not eat here. I returned to the establishment but they played the don’t speak English card. No understand. They did however quickly refund my money and even more quickly took mystery meat away. I should have called health inspector.

Fellow Unilocalers gave this place fantastic reviews! I wish I could do the same but it just wasn’t all that great. I ordered the dinner for 2 combo with chicken balls and ginger beef. This also included fried rice, spring rolls and won ton soup. The side dish options for the combos are pretty good, and quite a large selection. The combo I chose allowed you to choose 2 sides. Larger combos allow for more depending on which one you choose. I added on deep fried won tons because they are my absolute favourite! I was quoted one hour for delivery, which seems about average in this city. My order came to just over $ 40 which is pretty good considering the amount of food that came! Enough for at least 4 people, if not more. I was impressed with that aspect. The food was average in taste. Nothing special there! The fried rice was terribly bland, I would have been just as happy with steamed white rice. The chicken balls were very big and doughy, with only small bits of chicken. On the plus there were plenty to share. The ginger beef was tasty but not very crispy, kind of soggy actually. But my won tons were delicious! What really took me by surprise was the delivery guy. I gave him all bills and he just left, didn’t ask if I wanted change… Just took the cash and left. While I was planning on giving him the rest as a tip it was awfully presumptuous of him. I will likely continue to look for better Chinese delivery!

I’ve ordered from here twice now, and have to say I would order here again! The service is fairly quick and the food is amazing! The Egg Foo Yong here is incredible, as is the sweet and sour chicken. I have only ever had take out, so I am not sure what the restaurant itself is like. But, if you’re looking for a great Chinese place for take out, this is it!

Whenever I have a head cold and the sniffles, I crave the pork war wonton soup from here. They also have a shrimp war wonton soup where the wontons themselves are stuffed with shrimp. The lunch and dinner for ones are large and the business lunch for one is huge. However, the large portion of plain rice for the business lunch doesn’t taste nearly as good as the chicken fried rice in the regular lunch special. A family member who is part Chinese has informed me that many of their dishes are white-man’s Chinese food, but I notice that most of the customers(whenever I have been there) are Asian. It’s obvious that English is a second language for many of the servers, but smiles are returned with smiles and some of them automatically remember that my husband prefers chopsticks to silverware. The tables are placed tightly so sometimes the chair of the person behind you is too close. The woman’s bathroom has two stalls, one with a door and one with a curtain, a little disconcerting. Someday I will try the peking duck or some of the stranger dishes that I see advertised on their menu. I look at everything and then choose the familiar. My grandkids love the deep-fried wontons with red sauce and the Chinese writing in the menu.

My grandparents love this place so I’ve been a few times. I like the staff and the atmosphere, but I don’t think the food is that great. I found most of it very oily and kind of bland. They had banners up that says they’re one of the top 100 Chinese food places in Canada so perhaps I just came on a bad day =\ On a high note, it’s definitely cheap. Our dinner for 6 came to less than $ 80 and we had tons of leftovers. I didn’t take any to go but my sisters and cousins did, so not all bad!

My family and I went to this location for a celebratory birthday dinner; my dads and mine. My parents enjoy this location, but me, not as much. The food to be honest is not all that great, it’s something you can get at any other Chinese restaurant. The servers although timely with taking your order and bringing the food out, are not very sociable. So if you expect polite chatter, etc. this is not the place for you. The restaurant itself is placed in a busy strip mall location so it’s generally a full place; the majority of the time, it’s better to place a reservation than chance it if you’re really having a hankering for their food. The restaurant itself looks as though the 80’s puked all over it with the outdated furniture and overall décor. I wouldn’t recommend this place, but will continue going as I love my parents & my parents do enjoy this restaurant.

I know Chinese restaurants. Proper Chinese restaurants, like this one, have poor décor, questionable cleanliness, and awesome food. Another way to judge a Chinese restaurants is the number of Asian guests, the more the better, and this place is always full of Asians. Not much else to say, the menu items are standard, but made better than the others and for a great price. I recommend the«Crispy Chicken with garlic and soya sauce», item #50, it is awesome.

Do not go to this restaurant if you are a visibly«white» person. I was standing behind two Asian girls, who’s order was taken, I was then passed by the man taking orders, who started speaking Mandarin/Cantonese(honestly I am not fluent in either so I’m not going to take a guess at which) to the family behind me, who were visibly Chinese, he then left and never came to check on me, seat me, take my order, ANYTHING! Really pathetic service. I just left.

Edmonton has quite a few Chinese restaurants serving up memories of the homeland or even mom’s kitchens. Good Buddy, is not one of them. It’s actually kind of disappointing that I still haven’t found a consistently good place to eat Chinese food. Good Buddy looks like any other Chinese restaurant: 80’s looking furniture which probably hasn’t been updated since inception. They do have a Karaōke system set up in the back. As expected, the place is quite packed with people filling up tables and servers whizzing by with dishes of food. Those of you who are a little a paranoid about the cleanliness of the chopsticks, do not fear for they are packaged in paper. Those of you who are paranoid of the cleanliness of the tea cups, you should be very very afraid. I’m just going to guess that although their standard industrial dishwasher works, there’s simply no quality assurance for the one offs. If you are offended by servers who don’t smile or provide small talk, then you will be offended. I had my chopstick packages tossed in front of me like I was at a casino. I then reminded myself that I’m here for the food. First dish: your standard Peking duck roll. This is where you take your egg based wrap, fill it with cucumbers, shallots, carrots, bbq Peking duck skin and meat and hoisin sauce. Upon inspection of the Peking duck, the skin didn’t have a lot of fat on it(bonus!) and had your standard grade of grease. The egg wrap was microwaved rather than boiled(the wraps all stuck together and was hard to take a part). Overall taste: FAN-TASTIC. Next dish was Peking duck soup. Now, back to the whole service bit. Typically at Chinese restaurants, if you order soup, it comes out in a huge bowl and is served individually to bowls to start off. Our waitress just plopped the giant soup bowl in front of us and disappeared. The broth wasn’t very flavorful. It tasted pretty bland. You should expect it to be sweet from all the Peking duck bones swimming in the soup broth balanced out by the subtle tofu. It was too bland for my taste. The mushrooms were the worst part. It didn’t taste like mushrooms. It tasted a little old to be honest. Following this was the fried rice. It’s your typical affair of rice, peas, old BBQ pork shreds and little shrimp. The shrimp didn’t have that extra kick of taste which should that additional layer of flavor nor was there any hint of eggs in the rice. Moving on, we got fried noodles with meat of some sort. Greasy, typical flare. Nothing special. Our last dish was something I’ve never had before. Stewed oyster with pork. Not a big fan of oysters but true seafood should make any land-lover fall in love with any aquatic dish. Not this one. Kinda chewy, not really flavorful(the pork overpowered it). Altogether, dinner for four was about $ 70. Not bad, but the food itself was meh. Nothing outstanding. My search continues.
