Gordon Burns

I have been going to Dr. G. Burns for many years and I think he is one of the best Chiropractors in the city! Dr. Burns’ office is conveniently located; e.g. you don’t have to pay for parking; and he accepts walk ins and has reasonable rates.

I first heard of him years ago via a local parenting forum, when someone had posted a thread asking for a recommendation. He later personally joined that forum and gave good quality and unbiased free advise. I didn’t actually go to see him till much later because I was completely unaware that a chiropractor could even help me. I had actually been cold called by another office down the street, and though they were able to tell me that the issue that I had could be resolved with chiropractics, many of their practices sent out massive red flags, and so I sought out someone I could trust.
Dr. Burns shows genuine care and concern. He’s very open and honest. He’ll never try to sell you on something unnecessary, never try to rope you in to a huge treatment commitment. He doesn’t sell any diet products or seminars. He direct bills with pretty much any insurance company, I believe. He has my info on file, and I just say thanks, wave and leave once my appointment is done. His main concern really is your well being.
I typically get in to see him as soon as I need to, with a short notice appointment. Once there, sometimes there’s a bit of a wait, but nothing like you’d experience in most waiting rooms.
The office is pretty straightforward atmosphere wise, but it’s got what you need. Enough seats so no one is ever standing around. Magazines if that’s your thing, A coat rack. A water cooler. And some distractions for the kidlets.
I can’t express enough how much I appreciate how effective his treatments are at managing my sciatic pain, as well as easing the tension I get in my upper back. It helps keep me functioning. As an added bonus, I enjoy the heat pack and ‘schnooze’ for ten minutes between assessment and adjustment, it provides a relaxing mini retreat.

He’s usually good at squeezing you in if you need help and can’t wait. It helps if you’re close by, he is very accommodating.
I researched the ‘bajeezes’ out of chiropractors in the south side and his name came up several times with good feedback. There was also another shop on 103 or 104 but they were booked up for months.
I talked to him first when I went in, his waiting room had various fidgets for my kidgets to play with, and there are ‘zines for the ‘tweens, tv for us older children. The rooms are perfect, quiet and tidy. He staggers people into 2 or 3 rooms and has you in and out in no time. I was invited to take a seat on the bed-​thingy, I asked some FAQ’s about neck manipulation and people getting injuries, etc. He answered directly, he explained the origin of those common questions and added a few others I didn’t think to ask, thus demonstrating not only a flawless bedside manner and impeccable honesty, but experience and wisdom in doing what he does.
That being said, he is calm and soft spoken, humorous and approachable. I cannot deal with arm’s-length doctors who spend more time looking at their clipboard reading about ‘what’ you are rather than talking to you to discover who you are. Neck adjustments he feels are not necessary and are too risky given the area of the spine, to end that train of thought.
My particular issue was discovered by talking to me about how I first got the injury almost 15 years ago, and how I kept making it worse with repeated stupidity (don’t ever lift a pool table by yourself, or a 10,000 BTU ancient air conditioner, or 20 sacks of cement, or a 17 foot canoe, or…). A quick examination and some massaging around on my back told him what was out of whack, which side and where exactly it hurt without me saying much. He suggested some steaming hot pads from his Super Machine of Awesomeness, which are gel-​filled pads warmed in a steam tray and covered in a terry cloth cover, laid upon the area to loosen muscles for about 10 minutes while you schnooze. Then after he removes the pad, he massages the area and then prepares you for the type of manipulation he’s going to perform. Here’s my education on this, even though I can get my back to crack by lying a certain way on the bed or twisting while braced against a wall, it is not the same back cracking he’s doing. I can get some of the upper vertebrae to pop, which helps a bit, but I can’t get the lower ones that really need it. That’s where Doc Burnsie comes in.
He direct bills, takes all manner of plastic and even works Saturdays by appointment. If you’re skeptical about it, like I was about seeing an RMT up until a month ago, talk to him by phone or in person.
Did I mention that he also works with the Alberta Chiropractors ‘society/​or college/​or association (?)’ to investigate unethical practices and complaints to the organization by patients? Sort of a secret shopper deal. He’s cool beans, go see him, tell him Hans sent you. He’ll take good care of your back.
