Celebrating 100 years as Hamilton’s own art gallery with exhibitions featuring Hamilton born impressionist William Blair Bruce as well as 100 selected works from our permanent collection!
Historique
Fondé en 1914.
On Tuesday, June 30, 1914 the Art Gallery of Hamilton opened its doors with an inaugural of exhibition of paintings by the Hamilton-born artist William Blair Bruce (1859 — 1906). The 33 works presented in the exhibition included a group of 29 paintings knows as the «Bruce Collection» that were donated to the City of Hamilton by his widow, Caroline Benedicks-Bruce; his father, William Bruce, Sr.; and his sister, Bell Bruce-Walkden. The donation was given with one important proviso that «an appropriate venue» be found to exhibit them. And, so the impetus to establish the AGH was formed and the seed of its permanent collection sown.
