‘The Only’ bakery is one of ‘the only’ bakeries I would avoid when scouring the Nelson food scene. This place has many things going against it, irrespective of the goods available: it is just down the road from Nelson’s coffee mecca Oso Negro, it is run by an old curt Eastern European woman, it is hidden and squeezed into the bottom floor of a residence, and the décor resembles that of a walk-in clinic. The Only is supposed to specialise in bagels, but the selection and presentation were poor. The bagels looked more like Russian bublicks, which are larger than North American bagels and are often oblong. I did not even want to spend $ 1.50 on one of these bland looking creations, and I think this was a good call after watching the one other customer eating a cheddar bagel. He looked unimpressed, and kind of disturbed. He kept looking at it and poking it, as though contemplating whether it was worth the caloric intake. I did, however, have an americano and a date square… both of which were just below average.
