Spécialités

Healthy Vietnamese cuisine all made from scratch, using fresh herbs, traditional techniques of spice roasting, and a true desire for a healthy delicious meal. When possible, we source locally.

Our Phở Broth is brought back to northern style grassroots. Reduced out all the unnessarry quantity of salt, MSG, sugar, and focused on clean, lean, and healthier broth. Our beef rendang totally from fresh herbs and whole spices, no sauce, nothing artificial. There is an amazing amount of antioxidant in it.

Local Ottawa beer, local wine, all selected by the owner, and super tasty! Throw in there the coveted Canadian Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye. Named World Whisky of the Year.

We hope that our food will become your food. The straight through open kitchen allows everyone to see exactly what goes in to making it. The street graffiti, and real penny floor brings a change of pace and expresses a relaxed let it go vibe.

Asian Alley is simply a great space to call your own. So make it your own.

A bowl of phở worth drinking. Asian Alley wants to bring quality back to the standard vietnamese phở soup. From hand roasting our own whole spices, selecting top grade natural beef, to love and care, we hope to share a simple but quality bowl with Ottawa.

I’m not a trained /schooled chef, but I’ve been cooking since I was 4. Taught by a patient grandma, harden by having to service a small village, and recently, by an overly curious husband with some picky kids. Here, I bring together my lifetime of experience in food craftsmanship. I have no experience in the art of high production food, so my corner cutting knife skill is very dull. I still prefer to mix my product by hand, and am paranoid about suppliers bringing sub par produce. So if you see an asian lady arguing with someone over vegetable, it’s probably me, staking claim to the nicer selection. Old habits die hard.

UPDATE: in response to the owner. I have had phở in various places around the world including in Vietnam and this was unfortunately the blandest phở I’ve ever had. Maybe it was an off day or too much water had been added to the broth? It tasted like noodles in hot water. Also my apologies if I implied that Vietnamese food is cheap. I’ve always considered Vietnamese food on the more affordable end of the price spectrum. That’s been my experience and I’ve eaten at probably 100s of Vietnamese restaurants around the world. Although I’ve now realized that restaurant prices are higher in Ottawa than other places in the world so that may account for the «higher» prices. I’m sure the other items on your menu are very good but unfortunately I got a bad bowl of phở.
We recently has dinner here. I wasn’t very impressed.
The interior of the restaurant is very cool with a graffiti mural on one wall, blackboard menu on another and pennies inlaid on the floor. The service was good. The food was ok. I get that it’s fusion but the flavour of my phở was so bland. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately I didn’t think the food was very good especially considering not all entrees were around $ 15, which is quite pricey for Vietnamese food. I was expecting more taste and beef (small portion given).
It was probably the least tastiest phở I’ve ever had. Two stars for the atmosphere and service.

I’m really picky with Vietnamese food because I know what to expect so I’m often skeptical about trying new Vietnamese restaurants. My friends picked Asian Alley and based on the pricey menu ($ 15 for a bowl of phở?! Really?!) I was expecting a lot more. I got the beef rendang chow fun ($ 16) and it was interesting. The beef was braised, very flavourful and had a similar texture to pulled pork. The noodles, on the other hand, were overcooked so they were really soft. I thought the portions would be bigger, especially considering the price, but the portion barely filled the plate.

Love this place! Friendly staff and super cool interior, replete with Nintendo inspired mural and penny floor! I had the pork and rice and it was great, if a tad overpriced. Super fun Byward Market destination.

Went with a friend based on a raving review in the Ottawa Citizen. We were not disappointed. In fact we were in awe of the food, décor and service.
We had the braised veil phở. Instead of the cheap tasteless bean sprouts normally served elsewhere, we were presented with shredded radish — — a very tasty and healthy replacement. The broth was unlike any phở I’ve had from around the world.
We also ordered 2 pot stickers. We wished we had ordered a dozen they were so good and fresh.
I’m going back, forget the cheap phở places in town. This is my new favorite

We were staying at the Westin and wanted some take-out to bring back to our room. We were very happy with this restaurant.
One of us had an allergy to soy, and the people at the restaurant suggested and prepared a great dish.
Very nice helpful people, and excellent food. Definitely recommend.

A great experience — I ordered the tandoori chicken wrap with mango-jalapino sauce, and it was delicious. Server was very friendly, and actually recommended it for me! With that being said, there was a bit of delay with ordering, but nothing substantial. Heads-up that the portions are small in comparison to the price (surprised me at first) but filling.

My lady and I happened to drop by after having a margarita and appetizer down the street… this place is almost next door to the Blue Cactus and some cute little dessert spot. Anyway the place is really cool… funky I would say. Walls are painted murals and cute little lamps, a floor made from copper pennies, and what appear to be home made seats…
They appear to have a good selection of foods available, my lady had a glass of red wine — I had a craft beer from Bicycle Craft Brewery — their — Crimson Cascade (American Amber). Yummy… and for food we shared a grilled chicken rice paper wrap and as recommended the Organic Natural Beef Rendang — it was super wowser yummy. all of it!
All to say if your looking for a little nook in the Byward Market and not for pub style foods this is the spot! The staff were all very pleasant and helpful.
I will be back. and with friends.

Great food and cool atmosphere. Sometimes they take a little while to place an order but the food usually comes quickly. They’ve recently increased their prices though so I think it will be coming off my list of regular haunts.

Made a couple of simple take-out orders and was told they would be ready in about 15 minutes… we arrived about 20 minutes later and they were just starting to prepare our order. All in all, they had 3 people working: one chef, one guy who was sort of helping out (potentially the owners), and one server who was also handling the cash (totally inappropriate for lunch, dinner). We were told to wait an additional 15 minutes, then another 20 for one dish which we cancelled, then an additional 6 minutes…
There were no apologies, we were kept waiting for 30 minutes longer than expected… just about until our lunch was over. There was an overall lack of consideration for our time. We would have been happy to wait an hour if that was the case and were given the heads up, setting expectations is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.
So was it worth the wait? Unfortunately, the food was mediocre at best ³⁄₅ stars. The shrimp wrap I ordered was not wrapped very tightly and fell apart and was not very good in general, and the Bahn Mi was unlike any I’ve had before– overly seasoned, too much garlic and butter… and the pork belly was more like pulled pork.
Total disappointment from the service to the meal itself. Our entire office was very hopeful this would be a great place for lunch… but it seems as if the owners have not invested in scaling-up the kitchen and focusing on quality– «penny wise, pound foolish» sums up this place, ironically the floor is covered in pennies.

Three of us went here for dinner on a Monday.
Our server, Aleysha (sp?) was super friendly and incredibly helpful. She went through each of the six draft beer options, explaining the taste and her preferences. I went with her recommendation (the Bicycle lug tread, which had a nice hint of grapefruit). I later had the Beau’s lager, another local option, and both were quite tasty.
For dinner, since our server was 1 for 1 on the beer, I also took her food recommendation and opted for Beef rendang chow fun ($ 15.95). This was both delicious and very filling. The beef was so tender. I ended up taking half of it to go, even with my co-workers helping me. I was given the option of adding extra heat to the dish and told her to not be shy. It had just the right amount of spice.
The other guys got the brasied veal and bok choy and the Canadian maple pulled pork sandwich. (Talk about Canadian-Asian fusion, aka Can-Asian!) They both loved their dishes.
At one point, we were the only table in the joint (it was a Monday) so the Vietnamese and Chinese owners came over to talk to us after they prepared our meals. It became apparent very quickly just how passionate they are about cooking, their concept, and where the drew the inspiration for their menu.
Overall, this place is well-deserving of 5 stars for the quality of food, the value, the service, the hands-on engagement of the owners and the rather chic ambiance. I’ll be back!

This place is fantastic. If you’re near here you’ve got to stop in and try this place. I’ve never had Vietnamese food before and enjoyed the selections that they offered here. I was travelling with a very picky companion when it comes to food, and even he was able to find something on the menu that was appetizing. The service is excellent and the food was delicious and the price was very reasonable for the portion size. The seating is accommodating for large groups, but not more than two groups of seven. It would be a tight squeeze. They offer free WiFi and takeout orders. The spring rolls are also very delicious! This place is a MUST TRY!

Visiting Ottawa, I went in this little restaurant to look for vegan food. To my great surprise they had a few options that looked tasty, especially a veggie Phở not made with MSG (miracle!). Had it been another day, I would have probably taken that, but knowing we had to drive afterwards, I decided to take another meal (Phở makes me sleepy). So, I ordered the vegan Chow fun with carrots and cabbage. My friends (meat eaters) got the vegan Pad Thai and rice rolls with the peanut sauce. First, the price is excellent for the quality of the food. My friend who is, according to her experience, a Pad Thai connoisseur, was going nuts on the Pad Thai. She devoured it and shortly after, forced me to give it a ⁵⁄₅ rating. She mentioned the Pad Thai was flavourful and didn’t have the oily flavour she hates from lesser quality locations. Chow fun seemed to be another version of Pad Thai, but with carrots and cabbage. We all liked it, not knowing exactly which one of these dishes were our favourite. Rice rolls were good according to my friends, but the peanut sauce could be better (also said my boyfriend). Still giving it a 5 for the low price and delicious food overall.

Asian Alley has a very different atmosphere than your average phở place — it’s bright, trendy, and colourful. When we walked in we were greeted by an extremely friendly server who offered to answer any questions we had about the menu.
What you do get: very big portions of decent food for a reasonable price. The broth was different than the phở broth I’m used to — much more herbal and aromatic than the average phở broth, but the night we were there, also a little bit lacking in depth. Still, the noodles, toppings, and shrimp rolls that we had to start were all tasty, and the broth was different, not bad. It was nice to try something new, and what we tasted made me want to try more items on the menu.
What we didn’t get? Attention that matched the service when we first walked in the door! After we were originally seated, it took forever for someone to come and clear dirty dishes from in front of us, and once that was done it took them a long time to come back and order. When they brought out the food, it was dropped off quickly and without comment, and when we finished our appetizers the dishes sat in front of us, in the way when our noodles came. Our drinks were empty before our main dishes came and were never refilled. We would have had to get up and chase someone down to ask for more, so we didn’t bother. The bill never came, but some places they don’t bring it to you… when we went up to pay, though, they had our order wrong and it took a while to sort it out.
I’m hoping that all of the problems with service were a result of growing pains — we had no idea this place was here when we stumbled upon it, even though we work in the area, so it may have just opened. We’ll give it another chance because of the promising food, but if you’re in a hurry I might have a hard time recommending you come here after the service we received.

Right away when I walked in the staff were super friendly and helped me get comfortable with my stroller. We were brought water without asking, which to me is the best way to start.
I had a huuuuge bowl of phở and my 2 year old had the pork and shrimp dumplings. Everything tasted very fresh.
The phở broth wasn’t the typical taste I expected. It had a nice acidity to it and a little spicy. It was served with shredded cabbage instead of bean sprouts.
Although I wasn’t expecting these flavours, I really enjoyed my meal. The staff again, was very kind and was happy to honour my 10% for checking in. How cool is that!
The setting is more «fast food» family style dining. The wood benches are not so great for a lengthy time… Maybe that’s the point! Eat and go!
Fun casual vibe, good food and great location!

Intention: to give phở another chance after a horrible experience at Ginger (yes I know — what was I thinking) and try it at one of the rumoured to be best spots in Ottawa. Was seeking something around $ 10 – 15 in a casual bright space.
What we got: great ambiance, bright space with open kitchen. We were confused when we came in — but you do in fact seat yourself and the server came to our table to grab orders. The man who served us was so quick on his feet eager to get us out meals and drinks timely. Spicy beef phở (around $ 13) WAS UNREAL. Perfect balance of spices and heat. The broth I could drink for days and will totally crave when I’m sick or cold from now on; and chicken pad Thai (around $ 13) was the best I’ve ever had. Sweet, generous portions of chicken. Served with big cups of water and fresh lime.
One less star because the seating is uncomfortable with no place to hang your jacket — you’ll see what I mean in the photos. And the appetizers are a bit pricy ($ 9) when the mains are around $ 11 – 15. Smaller portions at a cheaper price could help remedy our aversion to getting one or two. And the communal utensils etc. on the tables we were HUGE fans of, but, could benefit from communal water pitchers too! Our glasses were empty for half of the meal which is not ideal when opting for Spicy Beef.
Overall, blown away by this phở!

Quirky eatery that drew us in with the sign «organic beef noodle soup.» Tried it and tasted as good as grandma’s. Fresh rolls were amazing (topped with fresh basil leaves) and the peanut sauce was unbelievable. Tried the pad thai and liked it as much as some of Toronto’s best known thai eateries. Hoang the main guy was a super awesome host. Coming back for lunch tomorrow!

Arrived and found conflicting opening times posted and the restaurant was empty but someone waved me in and he was very friendly.
The décor and vibe is very funky and I enjoyed it very much including the the seating.
The food was amazing, I ordered spicy chicken phở and the broth was light and spicy. I spoke with the staff and found they use low msg and low salt in the broth and this was very impressive.
For a quick, good lunch or meal I’d recommend Asian Alley highly.

The first thing that strikes you when you enter is the tiled penny floor. Just amazing that they did it in 4 days. The food was good as well. It’s more of a Viet-fusion restaurant — so Phở isn’t really Phở. If you are Vietnamese, you may be a little disappointed. They used the noodles normally reserved for Pad Thai (wide noodle) and the firecracker shrimp was good — but the sauce tasted commercial. The waitstaff was VERY friendly. I was just expecting a more traditional restaurant or a more clever fusion revipes.
