My husband and I stopped by Far Jano today for a little snack. It’s a new restaurant; we’ve driven by it several times and I’ve been meaning to try it, and we finally did today. Overall our snacks were good, but I really want to come back and try their Somali dishes for dinner. I had 2 beef sambusas($ 1.25 each) and my husband had the Sabaya Wrap($ 6.99). We also shared a bottle of guava juice — imported from Saudi Arabia($ 2.25). The sambusas were similar to Indian samosas, but since they are African the seasonings are different and they don’t contain potatoes or peas. The filling was just ground beef, onions and spices. It had a slight spicy kick to it. The filling was flavourful and the pastry was crispy and not too doughy. I liked them. I had a bite of my husband’s wrap and it was good but too rich for my tastes. The wrap was really rich and buttery. They call the wrap a «Somali pita» and it’s similar to parathas in Indian cuisine. It was filled with sauteed beef cubes, green peppers and onions. The filling was tasty, but there was not enough of it, in my opinion. The place is really new and they don’t have everything on their menu yet. I wanted to try a meat pie, but they said they just received the equipment for it but they are not serving any just yet. I will be back to try the meat pies. I also want to try their suqaar and lahoh. However, the lahoh is only served for breakfast and I don’t know if I would ever be out there during breakfast time :( The staff are very nice. There’s a young man there who’s super friendly. Far Jano is on the industrial part of St. Laurent Blvd. It’s in the same complex as the Ottawa Islamic Centre and Assalam Mosque. There’s some free parking in the lot in front. I am so happy to see some more diversity in the culinary scene in Ottawa. I hope that they do well. I should mention though that they don’t exclusively serve Somali cuisine. They also have burgers, fries, hotdogs, poutine, and spaghetti! However, the next time I come back it will definitely be for the Somali food :)
