Now I’m not a huge fan of races, but this festival is one of the biggest of its kind in Canada and it’s incredibly popular. It gains so much community, national, and international support, with participants from Canada and all over the world, and even around the world. What I really love is that it facilitates exercising and living an active and healthy life, while raising money for charities. They’ve raised millions of dollars for the Ottawa Hospital Foundation, which is always so fantastic. If you’re not at all interested in running or fundraising, the many road closures around Ottawa during the events may be really inconvenient and annoying. On top of that, the city is packed, with the streets, restaurants, and shops all filled with locals and tourists, so be mindful and patient.

Two things about Ottawa Race Weekend – 1. If you’re a runner or love watching races this is the weekend to be in Ottawa. 2. If you’re not a runner nor do you enjoy road closures(who does?) then avoid Ottawa this weekend! Many roads around Ottawa are closed for this massive festival and hotels are very hard to get as a lot of runners from around Canada, the US and even across the globe come here for this elite event. As a participant last year I found the entire event to be very well managed. If you’re a first timer you should really get your race kit early to avoid large crowds or having to worry about it on race day. If you have people coming to watch you need to really coordinate the meeting places and the best spot is along Queen Eliz. Drive(near the finish line). The race festival is held every year in May so usually the weather is warm but not TOO hot. If you plan dinners or breakfasts during this weekend prepare to wait in lines as the city is really quite busy during this weekend. The hub of activity(start/finish and booths) is City Hall and Confederation Park.
