The Glebe

Very cool urban neighborhood in the Capital District of Ottawa.
Looks to be designed in the late 19^th Century with a nice mix of residential styles from Victorian to Queen Anne to Georgian to neo-​Classical and others. Bank Street is the commercial aorta of this quarter. It has a diverse vibe to account for the variety of people living the downtown life. Schools are also said to be among the best in the city.
This is definitely a good place to hang out if you are not fortunate enough to be able to afford to live there. Everything is walking distance; from morning bagels to evening cocktails. You really never have to go anywhere else.
Apparently, you can also hear the band and bagpipes playing at the Changing of the Guard on Parliament Hill from some parts of The Glebe.
That’s a plus. But, can someone tell me how it came by its name?

The Glebe is one of the closest neighbourhoods in proximity to downtown Ottawa. Many of the homes are of the post war brownstone brick variety. Some have been fixed up quite well. Others are falling apart. It is a very mid to upscale area that offers a great living near the Canal, downtown and easy access from the Queensway to east and west. The huge benefit also for living near downtown is you are usually counter flow to traffic as everyone comes into downtown Ottawa in the morning and leaves at night.

The last weekend in May is a great time to visit as the Great Glebe Garage sale is going on. This is a weekend when many of the residents put out their items for sale that are no longer needed. Good items get scooped up fast so come early!

The Glebe is a really great neighbourhood, I lived here until may and although it was expensive I really liked it. It’s a really old neighbourhood, you’ll see tons of Victorian style houses and trees, it’s gorgeous. There are tons of restaurants and unique stores to check out while here and they have just about everything you need, I know I probably went a month at a time without leaving it. It’s also dog friendly, you can take your dog into a lot of the stores and nobody minds, if you love dogs like me you will meet many furry babies on bank.
I’ve heard the schools are top notch, Glebe High School is known for being one of the better ones in Ottawa as well as some of the elementary schools. The residents of the Glebe are also extremely friendly in my opinion, although my boyfriend who has lived in the Glebe for a long time says they can be pretentious. It’s extremely community oriented, they have a community centre they utilize frequently and I’ve been told when the shops there are looking for new employees they prefer to only hire other people from the Glebe.

The Glebe has so much old charm. It’s cute and quaint, with many little shops and restaurants. Don’t be fooled, though — it’ll take some cash to do some actual shopping in this area. Getting something to eat at a local deli, grabbing a drink at a pub, buying art supplies, and other errands and little things here and there shouldn’t put a big dent in your pocket, but if you’re looking for art pieces, clothing, fine jewelry, fancy cafes, or gourmet foods, then be prepared to spend.
This neighborhood actually reminds me of one in Mississauga, named Streetsville, «the town within the city», but more expensive. The Glebe does have a variety of shops and stores, though, so don’t think that you can’t find anything your looking for that falls in your price range. They just want to appeal to different tastes, styles, and budgets, that’s all.

The Glebe is one of Ottawa’s oldest and also one of the city’s most expensive neighbourhoods.
In all seasons this neighbourhood is quite charming. The homes are all quite different. On any street you’ll find an old Victorian-​era home next door to a modern townhouse or low rise condo.
It’s a tight knit community which has also resulted in the area getting a bit of a reputation from other’s in Ottawa. Some see those as a bit elite.
The shopping in the Glebe is also great. There are several boutique stores along Bank Street as well as a few smaller home based business scattered on the streets of the Glebe.
If you can afford to live in the Glebe it’s a great place to raise a family but even if you can’t it’s still a great visit for the Great Glebe Garage Sale or just for a weekend of shopping on Bank Street.
