In a strip mall next to a gas station, Friends Family Restaurant looked like the perfect place for lunch. Perched up in the corner of a wrap around strip, this restaurant has big windows looking out over a corner of downtown Owen Sound. The speciality here is sandwiches, and the special that day was tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich, yumm, comfort food. I opted for a peameal, lettuce and tomato sandwich which came on thin sliced wonder bread. The bacon was on the thin side, a perfect amount for a sandwich, and had several layers of nice fresh tomato sliced thinly piled up about an inch high which gave me a nice juicy bite. The cook worked behind an open window and shouted out to me, ‘Do you want mayo on that?’, I said yes and went back to perusing the odd assortment of feel-good cute kitsch adorning the walls and nooks of the spacious dining room with a decidedly Christian bent to it. Then we noticed it was getting oddly quiet in the room and realized the Closed sign was on the door. It seems we were in there a bit late for lunch and they wanted a siesta possibly? Who knows, but my love affair with these working class diners continue…
