You ever hear the phrase«never eat anything bigger than your head?» Ignore it when it comes to their pies.

On rare occasions you find a restaurant that offers exactly what you would expect from the décor and name. «Mom’s café» The name alone says it all. Much less when you walk through the doors you are greeted with the same. Everything about this restaurant is yelling that it is a little, locally owned mom and pop greasy spoon eatery. They sling hash and fresh baked pies and aren’t ashamed of it. If you expect some snobby dinner shoving nostalgic throw backs to the golden age of dinners then you should look elsewhere. The honesty of this place alone is noteworthy. Then comes the polite and courteous wait staff. As is normal my children are with me. They are occupied by the kids menu that doubles as a coloring page. But even when they did get a little rambunctious or forgot what volume level they were speaking at there was no harsh looks or murmuring from the local patrons. Then the food came. Once again let me say the honesty of this place is apparent in everything. The chainsaw burger did not disappoint. As delicious mountain of homemade patties and various cheeses topped by bacon. Just the right seasoning to the beef was just the kicker. Generously sized portions for the kids as well. The tall pies were fantastic as well and worth every penny. All in all it was great food, family friendly, good prices and honest.

2.5 stars maybe. I ordered plain waffles and they came cold. Butter didn’t even melt. They were like toaster waffles, but not as good. My milk was nice and cold though!

This is a popular local restaurant, with a good selection of hearty food and great home made pies. Probably would not appeal to the celery and lettuce crowd, but it is always full of appreciative diners.

Great breakfast. Plenty of choices, and a really good kid’s menu too. Kids enjoyed Belgian waffles and pancakes with sides and a drink. Pleasant service. Cool diner décor with comfortable booths. Just off the main highway through Sooke.

We had high expectations of this place, and drove in 20 minutes just to eat here. If you’re used to eating in places that are healthy and good(ok, maybe slight food snob here), you will probably be disappointed. I asked which of the seafoods were local(salmon and halibut), so we each got the salmon wrap with salmon and corn chowder on the side. Neither would I write home about. The wrap tasted like salad mixed in a fairly cheap tortilla with some salmon and plain yogurt. The chowder just seemed so full of cream and flour, it wasn’t all that memorable. The salmon was good in the wrap, I will give them that. We felt like we had to try one if their ‘mile high’ pies, and the lemon meringue was good.

The servings are very large, but the price does match that. The food is wonderful. The waitresses are awesome and the service is very quick. Beef dip is wonderful. The eggs bene are to die for! Wonderful!!!

After reading the Unilocal reviews my husband and I decided to stop in here for a late lunch. The service was great, but the food was subpar. I ordered the three meat omelet which was on par with an IHOP omelet. Sad day for me since I LOVE getting omelets at restaurants since I’m too lazy to make them at home. I can definitely make a better one though. Husband ordered the Hawaiian burger with yam fries. The fries were definitely Ore Ida or similar. Not homemade. Burger was standard. A lot of locals were eating there, which is a great sign and I like supporting small local businesses. Unfortunately this place didn’t stand out.

My husband and I were looking for place to have breakfast while driving through Sooke. A local woman told us to try Mom’s Café. When we arrived, we noticed a lot of cars(good sign). We were greeted and seated immediately. Food and portions were excellent. If we ever come back to this area, we will definitely stop in again.

10 $ for bacon eggs and burnt toast? Ya last time to Moms for breakfast for me. The cold overseasoned potatoes a bit much too.

Do you know how you sometimes get very, very lucky when you’re a tourist and just looking for a place to have lunch? That’s what happened to my husband and me. We walked into Mom’s Café, and it was filled with locals from the area, which is always a good sign to me. I ordered the seafood chowder and salad, which were amazing. The chowder was tasty but not salty and the salad was crisp and crunchy – just the way I like it. But that’s not the best part! When we walked in, we saw a case filled with HUGE pies and other desserts. I ordered an apple pie. The inside of their pie reveals that they slice the apples and layer them on top of each other again and again and again. It was so big, it didn’t really fit in my mouth unless I cut it up. Ah, the kind of problem I love to have! ;)

We had the cod and chips and Boston cream chowder. The portions were huge, fish was good, chowder was not so good. Our server was friendly and served food quickly. Overall a good place to have quick lunch or breakfast if you are in Sooke or nearby areas.

We ate at Mom’s Café 3 times in 2 days. We were visiting Sooke on vacation and wanted to eat at a casual restaurant with a good menu. Ate breakfast 2 days and afternoon coffee and pie on the final day of the visit. All meals were high quality, with huge helpings. The blackberry pie was the best I’ve ever had. All berries with no fillers. Just one short block off the major coast highway and well worth checking out.

I have memories of going here as a kid, but I have come back twice as an adult and everything is deep fried? Had the falafel burger and thought that would be healthy, it said fried on the menu. Unfortunately that too is deep fried, yet dry and tasteless. There is also very little in the way of vegetarian options on the menu. Unfortunately I’ll have to leave this place in my past.
