I like this place a lot, and would give it five stars, were it not for these two major flaws: they seem to always have the air conditioning on even if it’s wet and cold(why don’t employees notice that just because they’re moving around and warm, their seated customers aren’t necessarily in the same situation?), and the americano(espresso) is too weak. I try it with less water, but it still doesn’t pack a punch at all. This isn’t unusual in St. John’s, but being spoiled by Toronto coffee shops has ruined me.

Great coffee, wonderful fresh scones and helpful staff. Ambiance is charming and rustic, and the location is great. Really nothing bad to say about this place!

Had coffee & a pastry here. Pastry was stale/flavourless and the coffee was awful. It was so bad, and there are so many other great coffee places in town, I don’t think I’d try them again. Unfortunate because the place itself is very cute and in a great downtown site with pretty views.

Enjoyed a smoked arctic char and bagel sandwich for breakfast on one of those rare sunny mornings in St. John’s.

I only had a coffee, and it was to go, but I can tell you it was the best darned coffee I had in St. John’s! I was visiting St. John’s from out of town, and it was a cold, wet day. The coffee from Fixed really warmed me up on my touristy walk through downtown!

We stopped in at Fixed to grab a quick bite one morning before heading out on a sight seeing drive. Unfortunately this meant that the selection of baked goods(which were freshly baked) was a little limited. Peaking into the kitchen, it looked like we just missed fresh bagels! Luckily we did enjoy the items we did select, particularily the raspberry oat scone, which was tender and not overly sweet. On the plus side, the latte I had was served as definitely the best I had while in St. John’s, and my two-a-day latte habit means I got around to the different cafes. The café itself was inviting, and the staff, helpful and friendly. Though we took our order to go, we definitely would have felt comfortable hanging out for a bit. Unfortunately Fixed wasn’t conviently located to our hotel, but I would be a regular if I lived in St. John’s.

Hard to imagine a coffee shop having a patio better than this one. Great drinks too, and a nice cozy back room with extra seating.

The apple cider is delicious! They didn’t have many baked products when we got there though.

From reading the Scope ‘best of St John’s’, this place was put near the top of my list. I was eager to try their coffee and baked goods which made them one of the best café in the city. Located in a great spot on Ducksworth St, the café was definitely filled up on my early morning arrival. I came here twice and both times the experience was good but not great. The big difference between this café and Rocket or Hava Java is not the actual product but my interactions with the staff. Fixed service was polite but not open or warm. In my conversation, one worded answers came out reserved and with a smile. It’s a far departure from the other 2 café. As for the coffee and baked goods, I got a cappuccino the first time. Nice proprtion balance of milk, foam, and espresso. The espresso itself was a bit too light for my taste(it almost felt like there was too little bean/too much water). From what I could taste, there was no acidity and bitterness so that was good. I grabbed a raspberry oat scone that was freshly made. It was not dry or overworked so it was well made. A light hand was used for the sugar which is great. I don’t like overly sweetened items. The raspberry was a muted flavour and the usual sweet tartness was missing. The oat was a good textural contrast to the scone. I would have liked my scone to have more of a crust but overall, it was pretty good. The breads sell out quickly so if you’re going in the afternoon, its likely you won’t see them. They do not have a large selection of sweet baked goods but its freshly made. I saw 1 each of savoury scone, sweet scone, and cookie. There were 2 muffins and 2 bars as well. Overall, this place has a dedicated following and I wish I could be one if them but 2 other places captured my attention a bit more with better and friendlier service.

I was here recently for their FIRSTEVER poetry reading event. Assuming that they make it a regular thing, I suggest that you check it out if ever in St John’s. If they don’t, I still encourage you to head down to this beautiful and cozy café. I was incredibly impressed with the energy and encouragement from the staff, the organizers of the event, from the fellow poets and the audience. Not a single poet was hurried, and everyone was applauded enthusiastically. Having attended events in a number of American and Canadian cities, I have to admit that this small gathering on the East Coast has to be the warmest showing that I have ever experienced. If, like me, you are nervous about reading, this is the place to do it! Apart from the event — The café itself is a small spot with well worn wooden floors and a counter overlooking the street furnished with stools. What sets this place apart are the wooden booths in the back. Perfect for catching up with some friends. It’s run by two great guys who know their coffee — 49th parallel. Anyone who knows me, knows my deep undying love for those beans. As soon as I walked in and saw those, I was head over heels. Also, yummy cookies.

Awesome spot. They take their coffee seriously and have an amazing baker. Details: Love the pour over style filter coffee and perfectly executed lattes. I ate two authentic Montréal style bagels while there and man oh man were they the perfect chewy crunchy goodness. Although I didn’t hit this place in the evening they serve some nice beer and scotch so you never really have to leave ;) Check this gem out!
