Description

Spécialités

As a community book store, recently voted best in East York, we try to have an AFFORDABLE quality book for every taste. Our prices start at just $ 2 for adult books and $ 1 for children’s books.

Our shelves give refuge to thousands of gently used quality books, including: scholarly history, military history, east-asian studies, current events and books on art, culture and film.

There is also a large collection of science-fiction — including vintage paperbacks from the 60’s (Hugh says the cover art alone is magical).

We also carry board games and copies of «Command» and «Strategy & Tactics» magazines, complete with games, including maps and unpunched counters.

Collectibles include TV scripts, maps and Star Trek blueprints.

To close the gaps in Hugh’s collection, we have added children’s books, books for young adults, mysteries, recent best sellers and prize winning literature.

Historique

Fondé en 2012.

This location was once a quilting store where Georgene, the co-owner of Hugh’s, took classes in one of the nicest quilting classrooms in the GTA. When the owner announced she was closing, Georgene had to find a way to keep that classroom open. Hugh had thousands of books in a collection that he was thinking about selling. And so the shelves that once held bolts of cloth were modified to house books.

Hugh’s Books provides book launch services to local authors, and carries their new books on consignment.

Space is also available for book clubs and art groups to meet.

Behind the book store, The Studio @ Hugh’s runs weekly classes, private lessons and weekend workshops in sewing, knitting, quilting and calligraphy.

The Studio offers cards and gift items hand made by local artists at reasonable prices.

The Studio also rents space and sewing machines by the hour to people who don’t have enough room at home for big projects.

Hugh M.

Gérant de commerce

Hugh has been collecting books for more than forty years. He opened Hugh’s Books because it was time to find new homes and loving readers for his gently used, quality books.

Hugh notes, «Dozens of Toronto bookstores have closed in the the last few years. eBooks are having the same impact on bookstores that digital music had on music stores. Well, there is nothing wrong with an eBook … but there is value in a community bookstore where children can buy a book for a dollar and people who want to browse on a Sunday afternoon can do so.»

Hugh’s graduate eduction was in Military and Peace Studies; he loves to talk with history buffs, board gamers, SF fans and anyone who loves books. He tells people, «History is one pass through the possibilities; that’s why we also have fiction. It deals with, and lets us explore, all the others.» In the end, history and fiction are both about ‘stories’ — come to Hugh’s Books and let your imagination run free!
