Anton, the manager is completely unprofessional, rude and product knowledge eludes him. When asked, :what’s in your sangria?” he stared at me blankly for about a minute and then answered with, «I don’t understand your question». He was asked again and his answer was«white or red wine». lol Anyone who’s ever had Sangria knows that it’s up to the bartender/establishment to decide what juice/soda/wine/fruit goes into the recipe. I let Anton know that I need a minute to think about it. Then another server, Natalie came to take our order. I asked her the same question and she was very professional, friendly and informative. She was able to list all the ingredients in both red/white sangria, down to the fruit. We ordered from her. Antoine re-approached our table and said in an unpleasant tone, «Have you figured it out yet?». It was rude. I vented my frustration with Anton’s behaviour to Natalie and even though it wasn’t her doing, she apologized on his behalf. It’s not my first rodeo at JH. In fact, I’ve been a regular patron for years. Besides Natalie, there have been other servers over the years that are professional, informative, friendly and understand how to manage and relate to people; essential skills when working in hospitality. Unfortunately, it’s not the first time Anton’s behaved unprofessionally and rude. Over the years, it seems that he’s become even more unpleasant and acts as if he loathes his job/people. I seriously hope the owners will consider promoting Natalie. High praises for her customer service skills, product knowledge, friendly professionalism and excellent service. She could easily teach others how to create a great experience for the customers, not just serve. I also hope the owners will consider this review and take the appropriate action in regards to Anton’s behaviour and not allow this to continue with other guests of JH. We won’t be back anytime soon.

Their food is cheap, their drinks are cheaply. Their servers are kind. I’m a poor university student. Need I say more?

Couldn’t believe how good the food was for the price– I’m talking meal and two glasses of wine for $ 18. Great spot for us college students when you need food late at night. Waiter seemed a little rude but could’ve been the time of night we were there. I had the avocado and brie sandwich, friends had shrimp pad thai, and the grilled cheese.

priced well, good beer on tap at a good price. they only take cash so be aware. I think they have a cash machine but it’ll be one of those non bank ones that costs 5 $ to pull cash. go here.

2.8÷5 I used to go here when I was a poor university student. Good place to chill with friends when you don’t have much in your pocket. They are cash only and don’t expect much with service. It’s that kind of place. They also don’t split the bill. So make sure you are with a good mathematic friend or make sure to have calculator app in your phone. My go-to is marinated pork sandwich combo with double shot gin & Tonic.

This place is very similar to one of my favourite restaurants, Red Room! I’m a huge fan of their food and extremely affordable prices. All of these dishes are under $ 10 and they have reasonably cheap boozer($ 3.50 single bar rail drinks, $ 4 pints). I’ll come here again for sure!

This place may be cheap, but it’s definitely not worth it. The same owners of red room, green room, and nirvana. You’d think the fact that they own several places and have had several health code violations they’d make more of an effort. Servers are a bit rude and food is passable. I wouldn’t eat there. Drinks? Maybe, but not to eat.

When I lived in Toronto back in 2012, Java House was a safe haven dive for me. I spent many late nights at the booths and spring afternoons at the patio. I even said«when I move back to Toronto, I want to be close to Java.» Well, as soon as I landed back in Toronto I put my jacket on and went for a short walk to Java with my dad and wanted to relive some of my happiest memories in Toronto. I ordered udon noodles and fresh rolls like I used to. Not sure if it was because it was a Wednesday night, but Java is a lot more hipster and a lot less divey now. It kind of felt like stepping into a parallel universe. Fresh rolls are great. Some of the best I have ever had. Udon was great but, uh, a little more upscale than I remembered? Not as big of a portion(albeit still big) and felt way more fancy. We also ordered nachos which were greasy and probably just as divey as they used to be, but I passed. Unfortunately the service was inattentive as well, leaving me awful«meh» about the whole experience of reuniting with a favorite place. My dad said, before we leave, let’s go again. I said, let’s find out what else the city has to offer. So goodbye Java, this is where my love affair with you ends. Hope to see you again in the future, but it won’t be every night like I had hoped.

my friend took me here when she showed me around Toronto. she’s very fond of it, though she pointed out that the service is lackluster. I really enjoyed it. I had a flavorful Asian noodle dish. I was glad to have enjoyed my vegetarian option :)

One of the worst places I’ve experienced for service since going to the Fox and the Fiddle(Annex/any other FATF). The Good: 1. Price. Drinks here are super cheap. The Bad: 1. Service. Inattentive, uncaring, and just don’t get things right. 2. Cash. ONLY! Sucks. 3. Ambience. It’s a dive bar. 100% 4. Bills. They don’t split bills. Why. Not. Tip: avoid unless you have a great crew going and you don’t care about poor service?

I’ve been to Java House a few times in the past, but usually just to drink. This time I figured I’d try out their pad thai since I’m a huge fan of that dish. Honestly, it’s not bad at all. It’ll never be mistaken for top-notch, authentic pad thai, but it’s certainly quite tasty and the price($ 8.50) can’t be beat. I’ve had pad thai at almost double the price at other restaurants and this was far tastier than those offerings. I also tried their $ 3 mimosa and was similarly impressed by that.

My first impressions of this place is bad. I came with my sister and her dog on a Sunday afternoon. I saw the sign to go inside first to be seated, so I go inside while my sister waits outside with her dog. I was right beside the wait to be seated sign and a server came, ignored me and told the person behind me that he’ll be right with her. I just thought that maybe he thought I was with her or something. Seconds later, a different server came and helped me. I told him seating for 2 and that I have a dog with me. He quickly checked the patio and saw that no seats were free and the wait would be about 20 Mins so I told him I need to ask my sister first. As soon as I went outside, I saw a table cleared up so I went back inside and told the server and he immediately seated us. But he forgot to bring our menus so after about 5 Mins of waiting, I asked the server that initially ignored me if we can have water and menus. He said«did you guys just seat yourselves?» and I told him no, someone else seated us. I thought that was rude and uncalled for. And the exchange has made it extremely hard for me to enjoy my food and beer. The food and beer is pretty good for its extremely affordable prices but the server’s attitude is enough for me to never come back to this place.

I get sort of romantic about places like this, and it’s difficult not to. The graffiti wall, the throwback interior you know they aren’t faking, the fact that it’s called a coffee shop but really it’s a beer café, the old patio chairs just one step from breaking, but perfect for relaxing on which is what the entire design of the place screams at you as you walk past it, then back to check it out. The food. People usually love hole in the wall type business’s for a particular reason: cheap beer or food, chill vibe, iconic neighborhood status. I think you could apply all those to Java. But for me and my friends this day, it was the cheap food that drew us in. I had the chicken Pad Thai, my friend had the Shanghai Noodle and my other friend had some other Asian noodle dish. All were pretty good. And all were $ 8.50. The price was great as Pad Thai is typically about $ 12 minimum. The flavor was decent. Didn’t have crushed peanuts which I like, and the tamarind was a bit too ketchupy(I’ve mentioned this about other Pad Thai), but I was starving and for my dollar, it was just what the doctor ordered. Came with a tiny salad which was actually very good. Homemade dressing(by my estimation) was a nice touch. Staff were friendly enough, and were attentive. Suits the atmosphere of casual dining. ATM is located at back. Good, cheap eats. Worth stopping in

I have been here twice in the past week with friends from out of town. We sat at the patio both times. They have lots of seating outside but very few on the inside(I can imagine there won’t be much seating in the winter). FOOD: We only ordered food the second time we came. I got the Pad Thai and it was decent but slightly on the tangy side, not a very big portion. My friends all thought their food was decent. DRINKS: This is the reason why we came back. Their drinks are dirt cheap. Pitchers of beer for less than $ 15, sangria, cocktails etc. Pints of beer for $ 5. They also have daily specials that combine food with beer. After reading some Unilocal reviews, it seems like the restaurant really tries to promote drinking rather than eating. SERVICE: I would have to say the service was a little odd. The second time we were here we were waiting for our friend to arrive, and within the span of 5 minutes we had FIVE different servers come ask us if we were ready to order! They said they didn’t have set tables or a system, which makes me wonder how the tipping works. The restaurant is owned by a south east Asian owner(we think he could be Vietnamese based on the food and the language they were speaking). Besides being annoyed constantly by servers asking us to order our food, we didn’t have another bad encounter with their service. I have read many reviews on Unilocal about their bad service and I have seen customers leave without finishing their food. So I would just be cautious about that. Otherwise, I would definitely return, perhaps more just for the drinks than for the food. Just can’t beat that price!

Went here with a couple friends to grab a bite to eat for lunch. After perusing the menu, I decided to go with the chicken wrap. The wrap itself was basically a big taco and was filled with chicken and veggies and quite a bit of garlic. I love garlic, so I didn’t mind it, but it was pretty heavy. The dish as a whole was pretty fresh and served with another side of veggies which were decent enough. Overall, sitting on the patio was a great way to enjoy a beautiful day and the service was attentive enough. The food was good, but nothing to write home about.

Came here on a impromptu date to get a quick drink. I found their pricing to be reasonable and the food looked good, even though I didn’t have any. I will have try there food next time I am in the area. As for the staff they were friendly and constantly checked up on us to see how we are doing.

I can’t recall the first time I went to Java House, but I do remember being baffled by its name… The strongest association this place has with coffee is being across the street from a Second Cup. Since then, I’ve been dozens and dozens of times. Being habitually broke, and somewhat mindful of my health, Java House is a nice alternative to the overwhelming number of junk food options served for comparable prices in the area. The food is cheap. The serving sizes are a little above average, food is pretty tasty, atmosphere is more than tolerable, and staff are somewhat nice. There are several very attractive females who serve there. I remember one of them kind’ve looked like Scarlett Johansson. I wonder if she still works there… In short, it’s worth the price.

I can’t believe I have not rated Java House! I have some friends who swear by the joint and others who would need a giant historical oversized pole just to get near the entrance. Myself, well I’m a bit divided. The food is just meh, and the beer is okay. There are sometimes decent deals on pitchers and food specials. I’ve never had any health issues after eating the food. Only thing I dislike are the washrooms. You have to pass the open kitchen to get to them and they are really gnarly, so it really does destroy your appetite. I’m going to give this place a 2, but I can’t see that affecting business too much. As long as it’s cheap, the masses will keep coming.

This might be my new favorite spot for cheap eats. Wanting to try someplace new, my friend and I came here since I wanted to have after work dinner and drinks… On a budget. We ordered a pitcher of sangria for $ 15 which came with cute glasses with cherries. The sangria was basic wine and orange juice but it was easy to drink and gave me a nice buzz. My friend ordered chicken pad Thai and spring rolls while I ordered chicken wings. The spring rolls were piping hot and crispy. Not bad for $ 3.95. The chicken pad Thai looked like something I could make at home but for $ 6 it was decent. My wings were lightly breaded and served with a yummy, sweet BBQ sauce. Overall, I was impressed with how good the food was for such good value. I don’t know why people complain about the service, we were taken care of, checked up on and our food was quickly brought out. You do have to walk through the kitchen to go down to the washroom but you walk outside the kitchen not exactly through the cooking. Plus seeing all the older cute Vietnamese ladies cook all the food in the back justified why the food tasted so good. I love this place.

Everyone who has a weak sport for beer and a thin wallet knows Java House. They do serve like the cheapest pitchers of beer in Toronto. Be ready to meet a lot of people starting friday night. Beware: there is no separate bill here so do your maths before everyone leaves.
