Kung Fu Duck

Their food would earn them a three star. Their service and prices knock them down to a two.
Had:
Chicken cartilage bones — $ 6.00 for half a pound. They’re less seasoned than I remember them being. They’re also considerably more expensive than I remember them being. Given the taste and price hike, I’m now on the lookout for a better duck place.
Service:
No English here. Menus, at least. When I got there, all the staff were having their lunch. The girl who came to the counter did not look pleased to have her lunch interrupted. As regretful as I am that I had to interrupt her lunch, I am still the customer, no? Must I be frowned at? Apparently so. Asked for toothpicks. They didn’t have any. She kindly gave me a pair of chopsticks though. I was planning on sharing this, so I asked if I could have two more pairs. She looked at me, then walked away to throw out the bones from her lunch. Yeah. Not cool.
For you duck tongue lovers, I haven’t had them here, but they’re $ 6.00 for 15 tongues.

Had I not taken a trip to Wuhan last year, I likely would not have gotten the allure of this place. Growing up, my mom loved braised duck neck, wings, tongue, and head, but it was never easy finding good ones and when she did find them, i happily ate some along her, though nowhere near as quickly or as large of a quantity. The 5-​spice braise was good but not mind-​blowing.
And then I went to Wuhan, where the addictive spicy marinade for the wings and necks left every crevice of my face watering… well you get the idea. I couldn’t stop eating them while in Wuhan and I even brought them back in vacuumed sealed packages but it tasted nowhere as good as the fresh stuff.
Then along popped up Kung Fu duck, a place in scarborough, and in a short time had opened multiple locations. Before my mom took me there, she swore to me that her friend from wuhan said it was as close as it gets so we should get a good load — and so we did. It was good. She didnt lie. But it wasn’t AS good as the deliciousness in Wuhan and my mom and I, while sucking every edible morsel from the necks, discussed theories on why that is. «The ingredients here are just different!» my mom exclaimed. Likely true.
At any rate, the duck necks and duck heads are similar in price, a couple dollars for a 3 and they will chop it in bite sizes for you. The also have bbq pork hocks (also quite popular in wuhan) and braised wing tips. Again, not as good as the fresh stuff out of Wuhan, but close enough. Just make sure you drink lots of water after cuz it makes you thirsty. My biggest lament though, is that it didn’t leave my crevices watering, even asking for additional spices.
Not a sit down place. Just go in, point in the windows and tell them what you want, and go buy some beer for a tasty meal later.

I’m so thankful for Unilocal,that I have discovered such a unique shop. It’s a bit on the pricy side, and duck at large doses I think kind of clogs my arteries. So I will visit this place moderately.
I like the duck neck and pork hocks. they have a good spice to it, but not too spicy, I could handle a bit more spice tho.
I didn’t really like the duck tongues, it was kind of slimy and no meat, just this weird thing. I’ll pass on it next time.

The guy at the counter speaks mandarin and he kind of understands English/​Cantonese but not very good. But I was about to point and stuff.
It was a bit pricey and I didn’t know how to read the price tags, it’s best to go with someone who can read Chinese and speak mandarin.

This place is awesome; naturally so, if you have Mainland Chinese roots. For others, this will definitely be an acquired taste. This is my sugar shack because it has all my favourite snacks. I could much on this stuff all day long in my pyjamas while watching a Chinese soap opera marathon. A deranged little voice inside my head tells me that duck and other animal parts are healthier than potato chips. Plus, I just love gnawing on bones and chewy animal parts. Everything’s clean (I can see the grandma/​grandpa preparing the food behind the counter) and prices are dirt cheap. I wanted to give this place a good review because I appreciate the fact that someone is spending all day (every day) cleaning, marinating, and cooking originally unpleasant animal parts in a very pungent sauce just so I can satisfy my shame cravings. Thank you Kung Fu Duck!

Is it really possible to find some «unusual» snack food very easily in Toronto? Yes, it is possible and this place specializes in selling other edible parts from duck and chicken, made ready to eat, particularly the internal organs. This place is mainly a food stand selling these parts. If you are a really picky eater or are really judgmental of food that does not looking pleasing to your eyes, you may have to go to another place. The good news is that I felt fine after eating the food here.
I came to this place with some interesting people, and when I arrived, I was slightly clueless on what to get. We decided to get a couple small bags filled with duck’s tongues and duck’s hearts. A bag should cost only a few dollars, and should be enough for a few people to share. All of them were served at room temperature, but they all tasted like they were pre-​cooked.
Eating duck’s tongues is not as bad as you might think. They already had some flavour, as if you are eating duck from a Chinese barbecue place. They were fairly bony, eating them reminded me of eating the really pointed ends of a chicken wing, or chicken feet, but with a somewhat unique flavour.
Eating duck’s hearts though, was a little tastier. The texture was tender, and I ate quite a few, making them almost addicting to eat. They already had some flavour, and a tiny bit of spice. It did bring back some memories of eating roasted chicken giblets.
I don’t know if the people here know English, so you may have to say some Cantonese Chinese, such as «Ngaap Sum», which means duck’s heart, or «Ngaap Sit», which means duck’s tongue.
Overall, this is not a bad place to get some small snacks made from ducks. It’s also not a bad choice if you are going to be hosting a house party in Toronto, you need some alternative snacks besides chips and popcorn, and your guests are a little bored. I would probably come here again if I am really craving for some flavourful, tender, tasty, edible and very sanitary duck’s tongues and duck’s hearts.

What happened to the Duck Tongues at Kung Fu Duck?!
They are definitely not as good as before. They taste bland and boring. Where is the spices, the flavours and the aroma?!

The duck hearts though were good, thanks for Edwin A for his bravery. Maybe I would start making some duck hearts and at home.
Maybe I can open up a Karate Duck one day selling my own tongues and what not?!

Kung Fu Duck is NOT a place to get a meal. It’s a place to grab some addictive snacks comprised of everything duck. Duck tongues, feet, webs, necks, gizzards, and others. Everything is so cheap and they don’t really offer much else. They do have some rice vermicelli if you’re actually going to try to add some starch and make a meal of it.
The duck tongues are good, but I am in love with the duck necks. Cheap, tasty, and incredibly addictive. The necks are sold about $ 2 – 3 a piece (can’t remember), and each neck offers up about 4 – 5 pieces. The necks don’t have much meat attached to them, but I just love nibbling on them. They are marinated and spiced wonderfully. They have a great kick and you get that with every little nibble you take.
My girlfriend comes from Northern China and she says that this place is as close as perfect as it can get. I don’t quite love it as much as she does, but it definitely does offer some tasty snacks. And like Jen K. and Wayne have stated, you can’t just have a sample, you need to have large quantities!

Had the duck after we got home, as we couldn’t eat anymore after we pigged out on another restaurant in the same strip mall. The duck is really nothing special.

Kung Fu Duck is neither a Martial Arts Studio or a Disney Movie. It is another Wuhan (Chinese) Duck Specialty Shop. You might remember The Hot Duck from one of my previous reviews, this is of the same nature. It’s unfortunate that there was no Suburban UYE (Unofficial Unilocal Event) tonight, or else I would offer it to my fellow Unilocalers as my natural sharing mentality. Next time!
Kung Fu Duck vs. The Hot Duck. I would give this round to Kung Fu Duck as it kicks ass or rather Tongue (15/​$ 6.00) & Duck Neck ($ 2/​each) simply on a cheaper price point. The Flavour is roughly the same but the Smell of the Spice and the richer deeper Color is more enticing.
If you’re curious how Duck Tongue taste like but not adventurous enough. You can try marinading your own Tongue in the Soya Sauce & Spice Concoction and let it soak up the flavours. When ready, bite your tongue and you will know how it feels to be biting into a Duck Tongue. Enjoy!
Other offerings in this 11 am to 11 pm small take-​out operations are Duck Feet, Duck Heads, Duck Wings, Duck Gizzards, Duck Livers, Duck Hearts, Tiger Eggs (?), Lotus Roots, Bamboo Shoots, Bean Curd, Kelp Shreds, etc…
The whole idea of these specialty shops is that it uses the Traditional Wuhan Marinades which has a savoury spicy note to prepare Meats that are perfect for snacking with Beers. Think of it as the Asian Nachos or something like that while watching sports.
