Historique

Fondé en 2002.

Rean Cross is a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator and placenta lady in the east end of Toronto. Rean has been involved in birth work and women’s health since the late 1980s. (Rean is pronounced «REE-an» to rhyme with «Ian».)

Rean started out teaching prenatal classes, and had the opportunity to observe a number of births as part of the training process. She was soon invited to attend her first birth in a supportive role — and she was hooked. Along the way she became sidetracked by babies of her own, a return to school, and forays into the world of «real» jobs. In 2002 she decided to commit to birth work full time and founded Lucina Birth Services.

I’m a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator and placenta lady in the east end of Toronto. I have three adult children, two cats and one partner.

I began teaching in the late 1980s after the birth of my second child. I went into the hospital to observe births as part of my training and felt very strongly drawn to help.

In the 90s I went back to school and earned an honours degree in psychology, women’s studies and bioethics, which turned out to be amazing doula training. I started Lucina Birth Services in 2002.

In the late 00s, I discovered placenta encapsulation. I’d always been a big fan of placentas, but when I learned about what they could do to support postpartum transition, I wanted to learn more. I’ve been doing encapsulations since late 2009 and it has become a huge passion for me.

When I’m not doing birth work I’m designing and staging houses for my contractor spouse, singing in my community choir, Singing Out, or paddling in my kayak.
