Here at Unilocal we’re all about truth in reviews. We’re about separating the wheat from the chaff, stirring it up and letting the cream rise to the top. So let’s get to it. Let’s talk about quality goods, fair prices and jaw-dropping customer service. Canadian style. Back in 2007, I stumbled across a new tech accessories upstart in Toronto called GelaSkins that sold cool skins for laptops and phones. Skinning laptops was nothing new, but I was struck by the breadth of designs and work from artists I’d never heard of, but probably needed to. Names like Brian Despain, Ruben Ireland, Stella Im Hultberg and Brian Viveros. I subsequently bought a skin for just about every device I owned, and then about a year ago I wasn’t finding GelaSkins in my search engine anymore. Little did I know that GelaSkins’ success had gone supernova and transformed into Nuvango. A full-on gallery. More partnerships with artists. A bonafide photography studio. This train was moving. Nuvango’s goods list now included throw pillows, so for my latest indulgence I couldn’t resist picking up four to spruce up my aging sofa. A week passed. Then two, and three. I knew how cool these things were going to look in my living room, so the delay was killing me. I called to inquire about the order, and faced an avalanche of apology. Apparently I’d placed my order just before they switched to a new billing system, and my order got lost in the shuffle. We’re not talking about human incompetence or gross negligence here. This stuff just happens; you may as well curse the sky for the rain. But before I could even react, the rep on the line took it on the chin and promised an overnight delivery. Overnight from Canada to the States –now that’s impressive. I didn’t know what to say except thank you. Sure enough, the goods arrived the next day, along with a handwritten apology(signed by someone named Lily) and an extra complimentary pillow. Blown away. Buh-lowwn. Maybe my expectations are too low, but really, what American company does this? It has become my life’s mission to track down Lily and let her know what serivce like that means to me. Well-played! I can’t wait for my next trip to Toronto to see their gallery. I already love the artsy, eclectic chaos that is Queen Street(let the tourists have Yonge Street), so they’re in the perfect neighborhood.
