I’ve lost count of how many stylists I’ve tried since moving to Toronto 10 years ago. It’s been a frustrating and gut-wrenching experience(you ladies will know what I mean). I’ve been a customer of David’s for a couple of years now. I LOVE his work. He gives the best cuts I’ve ever had. I have a short angled bob with layers. This isn’t long hair, which hides mistakes, a short cut with severe angles and lines reveals all mistakes. David is great at cutting. The best. And he loves his work. He is always so enthusiastic and excited and a genuinely nice guy to boot. He stands back, re-evaluates then starts up again. He gets it done in a very reasonable amount of time, which is to say, he won’t keep you sitting in that chair a minute longer than necessary to justify charging a ridiculous price, as some places do. His prices are very competitive. I’d gladly pay more :) but we won’t tell him that. Bonus if you like doggies, his little Yorkie is always hanging around and some days, if he feels cuddly, he’ll sit in your lap while you get pampered.

The most important thing I find with hair stylists is chemistry. You gotta be comfortable with the person who’s about to hack off a chunk of your hair and trust in their abilities to shape your head the way you want. It’s a two way street, they aren’t mind readers, so open communication is über important. My experiences at Salon Prive vastly differ from Emily’s as this has become my spot for haircuts. Granted, haircuts for men and women are night and day, but before coming here I was never satisfied with the cuts I’d get elsewhere in the city. It’s a friendly environment, the owner David is easy going and yes, he lets his terrier Jojo wander around the salon which I’m a fan of though I understand that some people aren’t. I’ve referred about 5 people to this place and all have come back with glowing reviews. I pay about $ 28 for a haircut which I think is totally reasonable considering some of the prices they charge on Queen W. Note: they carry Kevin Murphy products which I find hard to come by in the city.

You win some, you lose some with an internet coupon deal… At Salon Prive, you most likely lose more than a few inches, a couple of bills out of your wallet, and your self-esteem. After purchasing a couple of DealTicker coupons, my girl and I went to visit Salon Prive on three separate occasions — sad to report that none of them were very good. When my gf tried to make her first appointment, there were no available slots until a week and ½ later. She showed up on a Wednesday afternoon only to be told by the male hairdresser that it would be a 45 minute wait(…uh, what do appointments mean again?). So she killed some time by going on a shopping spree at H&M(sigh lol). When she returned to SP, she was told it would be another 45 minute wait. This, obviously was very upsetting, and she expressed that they had wasted her time. He offered a free hair cut for the next time she came — I guess that was alright. So she went for her haircut. She thought the hairdresser Camille was very good and was satisfied for the time being. I made an appointment following that, thinking«oh goodie, Camille should be good»… I fricking HATEMYHAIRCUT. I have never had any hairdresser give me such a blunt haircut. I’m so glad the Elite Unilocal gathering was last week because I look like I have a bob with some terrible extensions peeking out beneath it(= apparently those are supposed to be «layers»). And now that I look at my girl’s haircut, it doesn’t look too pro either. We are both suffering a bad case of the blunt cut-no transition layer syndrome. I do advocate that attitude goes a long way, because Camille still had a great attitude and I enjoyed having her cut my hair. Just too bad that the fruits of her labour just was not up to par(OR, extra benefit of the doubt, she was just going for something way beyond/long term/stylish than what my hair could handle right now). Won’t be going back. Need to mention: only three stations… appointment advisable. Also, they have a chihuahua — dog allergists beware.

I recently visited Salon Prive as a walk in client and was treated as if I was a returning long term client. As soon as I walked in and greeted so friendly with a complimentary drink and snack! Fantastic customer service here I promise!!! I had colour and a cut done by their leading female stylist and its honestly the best color cut and style. The best part is its growing out beautifully too. Highly recommend!!!
