Sobey’s

So, I really need to re-​rate this. I still stand by some of previous assessments.
Cons:
— the staff really does suck. It’s like you walked in a high school lunch break and they just gossip, play on their phones, stand around in huddled masses.
— They don’t carry a lot of products you’d expect. (Their candy selection sucks) and they don’t refill the popular items fast enough (plain tortillas, they always have empty row for that but they have lots of whole wheat and multi grain)
Pros:
— I’ve left two things behind in this store: once, at a self-​serving kiosk, I did debit with cash back and forgot the $ 80 withdrawal. I called the next day and they had it! Another time I left my umbrella, went in later and they had that too. I appreciate that, that’d never happen in the metro
— the self-​serving kiosks actually function if you know what you’re doing. The ones at Loblaws SUCK. They are ten times more frustrating then lining up. Here, I always have a fast check out, and I rarely (almost never) run into a problem
— at first I was pissed they switched to Air Miles, but now I realize it’s for the best
— they have the best bananas in the downtown core, no joke (and they sell ones about to be too ripe for a great discounted price, even though they usually have a week left in ‘em if you put them in the fridge!)
— their pre packaged pastry section is on point.
Overall, I find myself frequenting this over most of the other grocery options, so, I give them a bump up!

This is a standard sobeys location. It offers all the typical products. Very central and easy to get to. Nothing fancy, but has nice products for your everyday needs and friendly service. Only downfall is it can be a bit squishy if it’s busy because it’s narrow. But overall nice store.

The Sobey’s near College Park is a lot brighter and cleaner than the Metro near the subway station. It offers more organic and gluten free products than its counter part. As well, Sobey’s offers student a 10% discount every day of the week. The self-​serve check-​outs are also extremely convenient. The line ups are shorter than most places during lunch!
Prices are also higher than most places. The only other major downside is the gourmet soups (small $ 3.29, large $ 3.99) that taste high in sodium. I almost felt like I was licking salt!

Great open space, not crowded or messy. Great selection of food.
Only problem I had recently, which has only happened to me once is the deli counter girl — I asked her if she has a moment to cut up a few selections of ham and she was so rude! lol, I just couldn’t help but smile because she was slapping the meat down on the weighing machine and acting like it was such a pain helping the customers. Very amusing!
Other than this deli counter the other staff were really nice and the layout of the store makes it a pleasant experience!

This is one of many local grocery stores and it offers a number if benefits.
It is cleaner and brighter than the downstairs Metro as it is a newer store, but it definitely carries a smaller product range, and I find that the prices are often higher. Sobeys does have a number of advantages though. It offers a 10% student discount and I find that the staff are generally much more pleasant. As I shop there frequently, I appreciate that the staff recognize me and will often come over to the self-​serve check-​out to enter my student discount without being asked.
I had a really good customer service experience here the other day. I came in the early afternoon to purchase some fruit and vegetable party trays that I was going to bring to a meeting later on that evening. I was going to be passing the Sobeys again on my way from home to the meeting, but I didn’t really want to carry the trays back and forth. I asked the manager if they would put the trays aside for me to pick up later, and she readily agreed to keep them in a downstairs fridge for me.
Sobeys is my neighbourhood grocery store of choice, but they lose a star for not being 24 hours and for tending to have higher prices and a smaller selection than the Metro.

This is a lovely grocery store to get your shopping done, and it’s in a prime time spot! They have all the normal departments you’d expect to find in a grocery store, and everything is fresh and well maintained.
It’s also a perfect place to come and get fresh made lunch from the prepared foods department… you can choose from pizza, chicken, sushi, pastas, salads, and much more. You’ll find plenty of business people who work in College Park coming here for lunch.
Their bakery section is quite impressive, they have a good variety of buns, in-​store made donuts and muffins (which are absolutely amazing!), croissants, cute cupcakes and cookies!
If your lucky, they usually hand out free samples on weekends too, big bonus.
Side note for students, if you show your student card and have a club sobeys card, you’ll get a 10% discount, always make me more enticed to do my shopping here!
The only downside is that it’s a little tiny, and may result in you not finding exactly what you need, but aside from that, its a great grocery store.

At around 7pm, the bread goes on sale. One bag full of bread is $ 1.99. This Sobey’s has good hours and they open on most holidays. The prices are not great, and the options are limited, but they have all the necessities like milk, eggs, vegetables, etc. I would not get their prepared food; find it to be too expensive. It is cheaper to buy a couple of buns, get 100 grams of turkey and cheese, and one tomato (slice it) to make a delicious and more affordable sandwich. :)

This Sobey’s is a cut above the other non-​luxury grocery stores downtown (except the mega-​Loblaws). I would easily give most of their in-​house made foods 5*!
To begin with their food counter, they make some of the best pizza around. The veggie slice loaded with colourful peppers, zucchini, and feta /​goat cheese is always spot on. The in-​house pulled pork is also surprisingly delicious and a steal at ~$ 10/​lb!
Other highlights include the giant veggie focaccia, and most of the rotating hot plate items.
This location also has a pretty decent bakery, with the cannoli and muffins being the most impressive from what I have tried! The cranberry muffin I’m devouring as I write this review is loaded with juicy crans, and the cannoli shells you pick out are loaded with the crème as you order to give you that crunchy taste! Well done.
To top it off, they carry honey dijon Kettle chips! Bringo!

I really like this Sobeys. It has a student discount of 10%, and you can rack up points for your groceries. Unfortunately, it is wayy too expensive for me. So I only go there as a treat. I would recommend staying away from the pre-​cooked discounted pizza, I have seen the horrors of eating a bad slice.

This Sobeys is serves the college park area of office residential complex. This is a smaller store and is designed towards speed i.e. quick pick up and go. The further enhance a push towards this as this is the only Sobeys I have seen that has self checkout (this needs to be pushed a bit as a lot of people were standing in line and going one by one to use the self checkout even though many of them were empty)
Anyway on to the selection it is geared mainly towards frozen items and kick knacks. Produce is run of the mill. Service is was OK when I needed it.
I didn’t get to explore the meat section as I was just picking up some dessert before dropping at a friends place nearby.
Not a bad place to pick up something last minute.

I like Sobey’s, not really sure why, but I just have a better shopping experience when I go here compared to places like no frills, fresh co, food basics etc.
This location in particular is kind of small compared to most major grocery stores, but they seem to have all the essentials that I’m always looking for, and as expected from Sobey’s, the store is always neat and tidy. The lineups are usually non-​existant, and there’s about 4 self serve machines that are almost always active just in case there aren’t enough real cashiers available. A huge plus about this location is that you can show them your student card and you get 10% off of everything in the store, even sale priced items. This is a huge deal for me and the main reason why I don’t go to the Metro downstairs.
Overall a good, reliable grocery store.

A major step up from the Sobey’s Express on Yonge Street, this new Sobey’s location located only a few blocks away blows many supermarkets in the area when it comes to location, design, and décor. With a larger store, more registers, and a central location (777 Bay Street commercial center; located one floor above the Service Canada office and connecting to the College Street subway station) I was very impressed by the size and helpfulness of employees at this location. While prices at Sobey’s might not be the bets in town, when they offer a good sale, I always stop by and take advantage before the offer is gone. With this location, the Church and Wellesley area now has a two Sobeys, a Metro, Loblaw’s, Longo’s, No Frills and several Rabba supermarkets to choose from. This is a major improvement from two years ago. Bravo to Sobey’s for opening this store in an area that really needed a choice when it comes to supermarkets.

This occupies the space that was formerly Druxy’s and Cultures. Haven’t been here since they opened (at least I don’t think I have) and I am impressed.
Even though the space is small, they really maximize the layout without feeling claustrophobic. I like how they also have a nice cupcake display with real oreos on top of the cupcakes. I’m not a fan of ‘fake oreos’ or ‘looks like an oreo but really isn’t’ on my cupcake.
The best part is that they sell Liberte Lemon Mediterranean yoghurt for $ 3.79, cheaper than elsewhere. Sigh… now I know where to get my yoghurt fix!

I live right across the street, and I’ve indefinitely boycotted it after many months of waiting for them to get their produce section together. To forsake convenience like this is not typical behavior for me.
They just don’t have fresh produce consistently. I’ve accidentally bought moldy tomatoes (the kind in a box so you can’t see the tops), or just not bought produce on my list because their selection is mushy or ready to turn. I have had a hard time finding firm onions, and onions last a million years.
Other complaints: many other areas of the store aren’t cared for frequently or well enough and often have products past their expiry date on the shelf (eggs!), and the layout of the store is a little cumbersome. The checkout lines are all consolidated at first, with cashiers calling you out to approach them. This would be fine in theory, but the line forms in front of the bread, bagels, etc., as well as being a key access point to the rest of the store. It can often be cramped or chaotic.
I was really excited when this Sobey’s first opened and gave it dozens of grocery trips these past five or six months. With a decent Metro just an escalator ride away in College Park, it’s well in to DO NOT WANT territory for me.

The other day my co-​workers were speaking about this new Sobey’s and bashing on the Metro that’s just down the stairs from it. Meanwhile all I could do was quietly sulk in the corner because unfortunately that dreary Metro is my neighborhood grocery store :(
So thank you, Sobey gods. Your new Sobey’s location is a refreshing new addition to my hood and I must say I am impressed with what you”ve done with the space! Good lighting, clean, «urban» floor tiles and actually a decent selection of produce and aisle products.
I’ve yet to purchase too many things but I will definitely pay another few visits. It’s a pleasant space to be in and makes grocery shopping feel much less like a chore. The only thing is, I still find metro offers better prices. Shucks.

There’s a new grocery store in the ‘hood, and judging by how busy it’s been the past few days, I’m not the only one who’s excited about it. I work across the street from College Park and until now the dingy, busy, poorly stocked metro in the basement has been the only grocery option.
Enter Sobey’s. This location is pretty tightly packed — lots of products in a reasonably small space, with narrow aisles — so it feels a bit crammed. It’s also a bit pricey, but that’s to be expected from Sobey’s. But, also to be expected of Sobey’s, they have lots of specialty items — fancy cakes and gluten-​infested bakery things, flowers, artisanal cheeses, good meat and fish options. And a gluten free section! Many gf bread products (all frozen), including bagels, donuts, pizza crust, pasta, and regular ol’ bread.
I visited the day after they opened and the customer service was out of this world, but I wont expect that to last too long. It feels way too accommodating and must be just a newbie thing. They have points cards — buying groceries earns you points that can later be used to buy groceries. Nice. They also gave me free coffee and a free reusable bag. Really digging for the customer loyalty.
Since I now have a choice between two pricey grocery stores near work, I will be choosing Sobey’s — it’s on the main floor and has gf options. I guess that’s all it takes to win my love.
