Sugar Mountain Confectionery

It’s PEZ heaven in here. Literally has one of the widest collection of pez dispensers I’ve ever seen. Came in to grab some candy before the movies (cineplex right across the street) and grabbed a bunch of jelly beans and some root beer twizzlers. They have a lot of variety and I think no matter what it is you like you’ll find something for your sweet tooth here. I spotted sugar daddys, gum ball machines, chocolate covered everything, and every candy bar you’ve ever had. Still a bit more pricey than bulk barn but definitely a great place to go for people who have very specific taste in candy.

A lot of great variety, and even a few items I’ve never seen before. However, it’s extremely pricey. I think it was 2 cents per gram, which may seem really cheap, but it’s not. They don’t even have a scale on the floor where you can measure weight, so you’ll end up buying a lot more than you planned to. I think I got like 15 small pieces of candy and 2 larger pieces, and that came out to nearly $ 4. I could get the exact same thing at Bulk Barn for significantly cheaper.

Sad to say, but I find myself back here in the dull streets of Toronto. As you’ve probably gathered I have one of the biggest sweet tooth’s to ever exist. Naturally, if I come across a candy store on my journeys I have an uncontrollable urge to go inside. This past weekend I stumbled upon Sugar Mountain Confectionary at Yonge and Eglinton. The bright colors of the awning and exotic candies in the window display drew my attention immediately. Upon entering I was met with the smell of toffee and hazelnuts. As I ventured through the store I experienced a sweet sense of nostalgia. I came face to face with almost ever candy from my childhood. «Ouch» Bubble Gum Bandaids, Pixy Sticks, Laffy Taffy, Pop Rocks, Sour War Heads… the list goes on and on. After filling my arms with everything I could possibly carry I made my way to the front cash. Unfortunately the service I then experienced was less then pleasurable. As I greeted the cashier I was met with dead silence. No acknowledgement of what I had said, not even a glance upwards. As I stood there awkwardly the cashier began to ring my items through. As the third item was about to be scanned the cashier finally broke the silence to ask how much the item was. Unfortunately I don’t work there and had never purchased this item here before so I had no idea. As I said «I’m not sure» the cashier sighed then continued to ring through the rest of my items. Once they had finished they set aside the item we did not know the price of and told me the total of my order. I asked If I was still able to purchase the last item and was then told no because we didn’t know the price. I have worked in grocery stores and retail stores before and know that there are other ways to find the price of an item but was feeling a bit uncomfortable so I paid for my items and left without saying another word. Upon first entering I thought I had found candy heaven although by the time I left it was less then heavenly. Although the sweets are tempting and the blast from the past brought back a lot of memories on account of the poor customer service I don’t think I will be paying this shop a visit any time soon.

Writing this review as I happily munch on some chocolate-​covered almonds. They have all your essentials in terms of candy, plus a good selection of international candies.
The chocolate is good — the chocolate-​covered almonds taste fresh and high quality. The store is spacious and bright (and smells delicious!). I would definitely come back here again for another candy fix.

Folks, it’s a candy store. What’s not to love? Friendly staff, bright decoration — I love it every time I go in here (and it’s often…)
Best part — they have items that no one else carries. And for some others, they had ‘em way before other Canadian stores. I’m a big fan. Just don’t tell my dentist.

Everything in bulk is the same price, so you can mix and match. Don’t spend it on cheap gummies, because you’d be paying much more than you would pay elsewhere. Go for the Jelly Bellies and other gourmet items. The selection really is good.
But here’s my beef, and the reason why I’m only giving three stars: they don’t always seem to know what the hell they’re selling. I currently have two items that were labelled «Cookie Dough» and «Mint Chocolate Malt Balls». The former seem to be little dark chocolate nuggets covered in dark chocolate, and the latter are just milk chocolate with a green minty covering. Tasty, but neither is what I expected; if they’d been described accurately I wouldn’t have bought them.

Came in looking for Hello Kitty stuff, found a few things. Found it a little pricey for some of the candy I could buy at a gas station or ⁷⁄₁₁ at 5 cents a piece.

They have an excellent selection of candy treats at the best price BUT I’m giving a lower rating based upon the service today. I needed a large order of Jelly Belly’s for a event and the staff was useless. The manager, Jill, was very accommodating the previous experience but that was not the case today.
Great product selection but poor service experience.

Staff are a bit weird. They see you, don’t say hi to you and then try to help you. I don’t know… weird.
THE GOODS
Candy! They have a good selection of British candy here too. Mmm.
I came here to get jelly beans. 2 cents a gram! WTF?! For about ¹⁄₃ bag of jelly beans, it would have been $ 9. I ended up paying $ 6. It was a gift, so I splurged but that is really really expensive for candy.

Ain’t no mountain high enough… for these prices. (It’s not a compliment).

Do not be fooled (ahem, Carleen), the candy here is indeed exorbitantly priced.
Bulk candy at Sugar Mountain is TWO DOLLARS per 100 grams. Scammers!
At Tutti Frutti the majority of the candy costs $ 1.29 per 100 grams. Then the nicer chocolates are $ 1.59 per 100 grams.
I will admit that the bulk candy here is always fresh, so that’s a plus. But it still ticks me off that it costs so much, so 3 stars is all I can give.
The variety is OK but really it’s on par with every other candy store downtown.

Yes yes, it’s a little pricey, but SO MUCH FUN (and delicious)! I almost died when I saw Jelly Tots! Jelly Tots! Amazing, the best blast from the past I’ve had in awhile.
I used to frequent Tutti Fruitti’s for my bulk candy, but was continually disappointed with the poor Jelly Belly selection. Sugar Mountain is WAY better than Tutti Fruitti, has a great selection (always), is a bright and colourful space, AND generally has a bigger footprint to wander around, tongue hanging out, eyes wide with excitement… (yes that’s how I look when I’m cruising candy).
I’m a Jelly Belly fan, and they always have a stocked selection — they also have all the regular bulk candy to buy, PLUS packaged candy and chocolate, and other tasty faves (ie. caramel apple lollipops… so good)
The price may not beat Bulkbarn, but c’mon, it’s so bright and colourful with all that good quality candy? I’ll pay the extra!

I am a die hard sugar fiend, so Sugar Mountain should be like a little paradise to me, but wow is it pricey!
My wife & I used to stock up on candy at Bulk Bin, so I’m used to getting bags and bags of candy for a couple bucks. We were in Sugar Mountain for 10 – 15 minutes and managed to spend $ 45 on a couple bags of candy.
There are some really neat bulk candies that I’d never had before, as well as a lot of unique chocolate bars and other odds and ends, like tequila flavored lollipops with real worms in them, which I would probably go back for, but other than that I would recommend going somewhere else.

This place is so over priced it is unbelievable.
10 years ago, it would be worth a trip. Now it is so easy to find any specialty or novelty candies online or in other stores in Toronto for less money.

I loveeee candy, I’m getting a sugar high thinking about it. But candy is candy is candy. Sugar Mountain has plenty of candy. Towers in plastic containers stacked for your little fingers to get a hold of (no eww use the tongs & scoops provided)!
There’s a lot of different types of candy that aren’t readily available at your local convenience stores or grocer. But there are a lot of candies that are. if you’re going to buy stuff from Sugar Mountain, don’t go buying the fuzzy peaches and hot lips. You’ll be paying three times as much for the same stuff.
You may not think a couple bucks per 100g is a lot, but it adds up. A small bag usually costs upward of $ 4. With that I could go to Walmart and get the king size bag of swedish berries!
