Ultra Supper Club

What? Ultra is closed? Nooooooyeesss!
I used to walk by this nightclub at night during my teenage years and peer with curiosity at the crowd standing outside of Ultra. Now that I have enough money to dress like the douchebag men & women here, I participate in the foolishness of Ultra Supper Club.
I used to think this place was called LUSH, because it’s attached to the store with that sign, but I learned this was not true shortly after discovering hygiene.
The people who frequented here are absolutely the most pretentious & idiotically dressed people in all of Toronto. Everybody thinks they’re either Baptiste Giabiconi or Kate Moss, in their stupid stupid costumes which wouldn’t pass as fashion in the furtherest corner of the Universe. It really is atrocious, if this were a retail outlet and they were the models, it would be called Style Senseless. Utterly laughable.
The venue itself on the ground floor features a elevated VIP section, a dancefloor which can be converted to a stage/​half runway for Fashion Week – which I find to be highly ironic, and a semi-​outdoor area that serves as an empty space for the purposes of nothing. The ground floor level theme is black.
Upstairs is a slightly more tolerable patio with couches, tables seating, and bar stools. It overlooks a beautiful… parking lot. The only good view of Queen Street is blocked off by the bar. The upstairs theme is white.
Oh I get it… the theme of Ultra is; Heaven & Hell… although I think it’s more like; IKEA + Hell.
The only reason I come here is to replenish my blackberry of six foot tall women, as there are always a good amount of said beasts strutting about. The most exciting thing about Ultra is the outside area. Expensive cars parallel parked next to the scores of moderately good looking women who don’t own them. The line girl with the clipboard pretending that she is actually doing something, and the weirdo Queen Street natives who look on at the party goers with envy as I once stupidly did.
I hope the real estate is turned into something useful… like another condo…

I recall being at Ultra several years ago, but for the life of me I can’t recall why. Apparently it wasn’t overly memorable. Not like the Bamboo, that stood in it’s place back in the day. It was a great place to go after work and to this day I recall the food with pleasure.
That being said fate had me back recently for dinner. It wasn’t anything to write home about. There were inconsistencies in the food from plate to plate, the flavor was meh…, and certain flavours were heavy handed. A pass for me.

Food wasnt the best for the price… i would only go back here for night life.

I haven’t been to Ultra for about 2 or 3 years. I think the last time I was there there were friends in town, and not really friends I’d hang out with if they lived in this city. But tonight there was an event which was held there, so I was back. I realized why I’d not been back in forever.
I was up on the rooftop deck with the group and, while the surroundings are nice, they have a lot to work on before I’d head back there. First, let’s try and have a beer selection. Molson Canadian, Cans of Corona, Heineken and Coors LIght — No, that’s not a beer selection. But if you’re going to have that as your selection, try and make it cold.
So then I move to other drinks. How about a glass of white wine? It’s a nice outdoor patio, fancy furniture, isn’t that the drink we need? but not if it’s served in a plastic wine glass and almost undrinkable wine. Not sure what kind it was, but it was pretty brutal.
Ok, so now I move on again to try another drink. Lots of summer mohitos going around, so let’s try that. And yes, that’s not bad. My friend decides he wants a bit of bitters in his Mohito (which his first version was served with some kind of fruit thing in the bottom). The server didn’t know what bitters were, despite the fact that the bottle was sitting on the bar. Let’s just say that they bartenders here weren’t hired for their bartending skills. They do make for some nice background for the bar.
I guess the next time I’ll be back is when some other doof decides to hold an event here. I do like meeting up with my friends, but please not here.

This restaurant is hidden at the back of an alleyway.
Yvonne T & I upon entry, observed a very dark ambiance with strange décor (Rooster Murals & long wavy strips suspended by wires that lined the ceiling on the east most side of the interior).
I ordered:
Watermelon & Fennel Gazpacho, which was very good & most refreshing being a cold soup.
Masala Chicken Supreme was optimal as the cut I got was the breast attached to the leg & was very moist & flavorful on the inside.
Gianduja Chocolate Mousse was very rich & powerful dessert, it gave me sugar dreams. The desert consisted of flourless chocolate cake, malt crumble & Ovaltine ice cream.
Service here mixed up our orders so that was a minor inconvenience, other than that service was attentive to replenishing our water.
It’s a place where I would go once in a blue moon as I feel there are better upscale eateries.

William T. brought me here for my birthday dinner as a surprise as he had remembered I wanted to check this place out! So thoughtful :)
We arrived fashionably on time, but let the restaurant know ahead of time that we were going to be arriving on celebrity time. The restaurant was still relatively empty when we arrived so it wasn’t a big deal. A part of me loves the restaurant décor, and a part of me wants to call it eclectic. If it were up to me, I would shy away from the table with the snarly roosters gawking at its guests. I remember when we were kids and we’d go to Chinese restaurants where they insist on presenting chicken in its entirety — the adults used to joke that if the chicken head pointed to you it meant you were having good luck. Somehow, I don’t think these intimidating cluckers give off the same vibe. The dim lighting made them seem even meaner — Angry Birds?
We were promptly seated and a breadbasket was brought along with a scant serving of goat cheese spread. Loved the bread sticks, the one dinner roll they brought for our party of 2 was cold and hard. From the Summerlicious menu I ordered the Bay Scallop Escabeche to start which was served with chickpeas two ways, pickled onions, cumin, olive oil and a Belgian endive for presentation. It was cooked just right and there was a generous pile of bay scallops on the plate. The roasted chickpeas were also quite savoury.
William T. had the Watermelon & Fennel Gazpacho with cilantro, toasted goat’s cheese and jalapeño. For those of you who are intimidated by spicy food, you can order this cold soup worry-​free as I didn’t feel the heat and the soup was quite mild and refreshing. However, I am not a fan of cold soups, and this one was more like a watermelon purée as I tasted none of the other ingredients. For mains I ordered the Chili-​Rubbed Boneless Short Rib with a root vegetable purée, and a goat-​cheese-​stuffed-​deep-​fried-​tomato. Now there’s a mouthful! Unlike the gazpacho, there was heat in this tomato. The batter was light but crisp, the tomato moist, and the goat’s cheese was creamy. Yummy! The short rib was on the dry side, and I felt that the dish itself was rather bland. Even the root vegetable purée and a dab of the barbecue sauce could not save this dish. I personally prefer boned cuts of meat as the bones add natural flavour.
The Masala Chicken Supreme was definitely the better of the 2 mains although still lacking in any real flavour. The chicken breast however, was relatively tender. This was served with dahl (lentils), pickled cauliflower, sultanas and a cucumber raita. It seems the chef likes to incorporate Indian spices into his dishes. I’ve got a «bone» to pick with Ultra’s chef, as I would’ve served a boneless chicken and a boned short rib, rather than the other way around.
For desserts we ordered the Chocolate Mousse and the Vanilla Panna Cotta. The mousse was a mousse cake sprinkled with Maltesers and Ovaltine ice cream. Maltesers and Ovaltine — the 2 foods that every Chinese kid has had! That coupled with the Indian spices evoked images in my head that the chef must be Hakka! I have nothing bad to say about this dessert — it was divine!
The Panna Cotta however was disappointing. It was served in a cocktail glass with some semblance of a hybrid between strawberry fruit leather and wafer cookie. This made the dish quite unique. However, when I think of panna cotta, I envision a molded, firm but giggly dessert. Ultra’s take was more like a yogurt cup in my humble opinion. It was not firm, and was more fluid-​like. I didn’t taste much vanilla flavour. The fruits that accompanied the dish were quite fresh (blue/​strawberries — they’re in season now!).
Verdict:
After 10PM, Ultra takes on a whole new personality in the form of a club. The tables are moved to create a dance floor. I would personally not come back for dinner, but would maybe return to check out the club vibe after dark in the near future. Their bar is quite chic and if you ignore the draped images of roosters, the décor is quite trendy. I felt the lighting was a tad on the dim side. The wait staff are quite amateur, as even when there were only a grand total of 3 tables they managed to mix up our orders. I can only imagine what happens when this place gets packed — those with food allergies may want to avoid the switch-​a-​roo? I also found the wait staff to be rather snooty. All in all, a cool place to hang out and sip a few cocktails — but definitely not a place to go for good food.

This is one of the worst nightspots in Toronto. I have never been to a place that makes you wait over an hour in line up while you have a guest list only to tell you they can’t find the reservation and send you to the back of the line. Were trying to get in to My cousins birthday and the bouncers just wanted to make everyone wait outside while they carted in people that were walking off the street. I will never go back here even if Im paid. I would give a zero but then this review wont go up

Until today, I had only been on the bumpin’ rooftop patio at Ultra. But NOW I can also rave about the funky ambience and delicious food downstairs.
Ultra is tucked away on Queen with a cool courtyard that leads either upstairs in the summer or to the dining room on the main floor. I was there for a product launch event so the food was a set menu, but I was very impressed. Started off with a mushroom/​truffle/​duck confit soup that was very interesting (a little heavy), but had a delicious blend of flavours. Secondi we had sirloin with garlic mashed and almost a slaw-​like salad with a sweet vinaigrette & mushrooms, and for desert, a trio! Mini baked alaska, chocolate mousse and some sort of apple cake (I think). Delish!
Really amazing décor! I know I say that a lot, but this place really takes the cake. We had long tables set up with funky center-​pieces and these vintage looking read chairs. There are giant fixtures on the ceiling with almost a zebra print that matches the black accents and rich tones elsewhere.
The rooftop patio is great in the summer, all white, very sleek, and a good cocktail menu.

Despite the negative reviews, I still find this place can be a source of good entertainment for a Saturday night. The inside of the club is decorated really nicely and looks modern. What’s good about this place in the summer time is they have both an outdoor patio as well as a rooftop patio that overlooks Queen st.
In addition to the club/​lounge aspect, they also serve full course dinners here should you choose to eat before dancing the night away. I have had dinner here and thought the food was pretty decent for being a nightclub/​restaurant. In all, the scene is nice and relaxed, just be prepared to spend.

Their new winter menu is really tasty.

Dinner turns into a party around 11pm, so leave if that is not your scene. But the dinner is great.

The standard bridge-​and-​tunnel ‘nightclub’ where shitty food and passé music meet dark décor and date-​rape blazer.
You’re coming here because either (A) You were invited to someone’s birthday/​bachelorette party or (B) You live in Thornhill and you’ve been dying to put on that Le Château dress and go out «downtown».
The audience is pretty much made up of all those kids you remember from high school who were never the actual ‘popular kids’, but now want to relive the false memory of days that never happened. The dark light hides their blemished skin and egos well. The whole place comes together like a bar mitzvah party where the theme is ‘please look at me Joey, I’m cool now, no really!’.
Of course, we were there for reason (A), so we figured we’d make the most of it… But after easily spending well over a thousand dollars on surprisingly poor food eventually the douchbaggery of the place got to be too much… We were forced to bring our group into the washroom lobby (what they call the ‘back lounge’) to eat birthday cake so that the tables could remain empty with reserved signs on them… A number of the people in our party weren’t allowed in by the doormen, who couldn’t decide whether our doctor and lawyer colleagues’ clothes were ‘fancy enough’ to let them into the half empty bar… Spotted a bunch of formerly fat suburban girls in the ‘cancer corner’ outside, woefully chain smoking their bodies into a state of delayed decay as they morph into the cougar exhibit at the zoo …
Ultra-​lame.

Ultra is a great place to party, filled with fun people, but for dinner… it’s mediocre at best.
I went there for a Bachelorette dinner and party good times. The party good times is always a sure bet at Ultra: fun party people…
The food there, meh. I ordered the SALMON TAR TAR, and it was the smallest dollop of toothpaste I’ve ever tasted. But the good news is, they give you THREE dollops.
For the main, I ordered the LOBSTER LINGUINE. Which was decent but nothing to sneeze at.
Overall, you would go there for the ambiance and the fun, but for a good meal, I would recommend you go somewhere else first and then come back to have drinks!

Ultra has that Bar/​Lounge atmosphere, I respectively give it a 4.5÷5. The décor itself looked amazing esp. the entrance to the place. I spoke to the hostess and she said it looked even better in the summer on the rooftop patio. Great and friendly staff and beautiful people, can’t go wrong here. Bottle of crown royal was $ 220 I believe, I paid ~$ 80 for 9 shots of Tequila. Bring lots of money when you come here lol.

Let me give you in on our own little secret… if you ever come to the Ultra during the weekend and there is a line in the enterance, step to the front of the line and say ‘I am a friend of Brenda’… or ‘Brenda asked me to use her name’… if you made it in with no line, you owe me one.
anyway, I like this place although there is some room for improvement when it cames to the food. I would expect a bit more from such an amazing place. the rooftop is superb for the summer days. Great music and very good for groups

Ultra is one of those great places, that if you don’t know about it, you’ll walk right by it. But so fun, when you decide to walk through the gate and down the hallway and discover a really beautiful club that is nicely decorated indoors, has an outdoor patio and a modern rooftop patio with full bar.
A friend and I had drinks on the rooftop. It was a gorgeous summer day, and the furniture is white/​crisp/​modern and upscale for afternoon drinks. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, and I’ll definitely go back again and try the gnocchi with Carol S. raved about;)

I am from DC but have a lot of friends who live in the GTA. I will have to say that aside from seeing them this is one of the things I look most forward to in this great city.
Ultra is a nice blend of great food and a wonderful scene. In the summer there is a deck and in the winter a heated patio. Combined with a fine bar and staff this is a place you must go to while there.
In addition they throw some great private parties. I have been to several closed events there and have always had a good time. The space is a little tight, but it just makes it easier to meet all of the friendly Canadians!

So, it’s after 1am and I am exhausted from a long day at a Sales Meeting in Toronto, really want to get to sleep but I can’t because I feel compelled to give the people at Ultra an honest review from someone who has actually been here (not just a friend of a friend who heard that this and that happened one time — sorry Lynda W. — but stick to places you’ve actually been to). The service was beyond perfect from our waiter, Bryce, and even the bartender, Laura (who came up to talk to us after dinner).
I had never heard of this place until a colleague recommended it tonight for myself and a co-​worker. We made a reservation, arrived 20 minutes late (my LotusNotes’ fault) and there was no issue about being late because the place was pretty open for seating.
I’ve tried some of the best restaurants in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara — my home turf. This place was exceptional and on par with the best. Ultra was similar to Slanted Door in San Francisco, but with much more physical space at the tables and a hipper décor.
Honestly, the swank vibe almost turned me off at first. The décor was a little too over the top for a dining establishment, dripping with coolness that could turn into cliché by next year. Knowing that this place turns into a night club on the busier nights makes perfect sense. With this slight criticism said, I wouldn’t hesitate to take clients here if I want to show them a good time and a good meal.
Anyway, wow! The food was terrific, we had «salmon chips» with guacamole. The flash-​fried, thinly-​cut salmon chips had just enough salt to balance the milder flavor of the fresh guacomole that it was a perfect combination of tastes. I practically eat guacomole for breakfast being from Santa Barbara, and this was outstandingly fresh, perfect texture — great job!
We also had the fresh tuna with benito flakes, very tasty also, although a little difficult to eat so I resorted to using my fork and chopsticks to scoop it up. Tasty as can be.
The vegetarian risotto with goat cheese, plantains and sun-​dried tomato mole was tasty and suprisingly filling for a vegetarian dish, but I didn’t really taste any plantain so maybe could have used a little more of this ingredient. The mole sauce was very unique and flavorful. I also tried my colleague’s cod dish with a side of rice and baby bok choy. The cod was perfectly flavored, mild and presented beautifully wrapped in a banana leaf or some sort of tropical-​looking leaf. The rice was good enough to have as a main dish — flavored sparingly with slightly sweet pieces of ginger. The bok choy had great flavor without being salty or overly cooked, just slightly crisp. Our dessert was sorbet — banana and blueberry flavors with fresh berries.
To top off the great food, I swear this guy Bryce had ESP. I overheard his conversation with a neighboring table when he recommended the dessert and it was like he knew what the woman was thinking before it came out of her mouth. He had a good knowledge of vodkas and recommended just the right wines for our dishes. Totally relaxed and friendly attitude with a good knowledge of the menu and drinks. He is a truly talented waiter and I will specifically request to sit in his section next time I come here (when I plan to bring clients especially). Talking with him for 5 minutes let us know that he is a smart guy and he had his eyes and ears tuned to what’s going on with his customers at all times. Very communicative and helpful.
Prices were reasonable for what you get — excellent food and service in a well-​decorated environment, decent portions — for 2 with a couple drinks each, appetizers, main courses and a dessert our bill was around $ 150.
I can’t recommend the restaurant enough and hope that my next meal will be as perfect as this.

I am not sure if it is ethical to write a review of a place that was seen through a somewhat intoxicated (to down right trashed) pair of eyes but nonetheless, I shall march forward.
Ultra Supper Club is a trendy eat-​and-​boozery that makes you feel like you are the classiest lady in town even if you are stumbling on your stilettos to make it to the washroom ‘before it is too late.’ The food is above average and so is the price, but, factoring in the fun of the rooftop patio after dinner and the amazing décor of the place, it is worth the superlative spending.
Tip: I recommend Ultra for a stagette party (when you know you’re spending big) because the place has giant booths suitable for big parties and lots of room on the tables for martinis and shooters to boot.

Ultra is high end for the low end.
What I mean by that to be totally frank is this: If fine dining is the Olive garden in the suburbs to you, then Ultra is the finest of dining.
The food is actually pretty good, and the staff are friendly and age/​dressed appropriate. This is really where young Bay Street come to drink Grey Goose and try to pick up girls in identical dresses and haircuts from good family standing.
The bathrooms are pretty good and the rooftop patio is totally gorgeous. During the MMVAs and TIFF, Ultra gets the best DJ lineup in the city and when MuchMusic and MTV do parties there, they get a pretty good mixed crowd.
It’s really gorgeous for what it is and the program is dope. But, don’t go thinking you’re gonna get Morton’s on Prego at this joint. It’s a dancefoor with food, and should be treated as such.

Ultra is OK as a lounge. They have a nice rooftop patio which makes it worthwhile in the summer and while it is a typical King West lounge the level of pretention is tolerable.
Surprizingly, being a supper club and all, the food here is pretty good.
