Wibke’s Espresso Bar

Nice little coffee shop, and wonderful retreat from West Bloor Village overrun be chains. Home baked goods, delicious coffee and friendly owner/​baristas. On the smallish side, but hardly ever crowded.
Unfortunately, Wibke’s had closed for good.

Absolutely the worst I’ve ever been treated as a pleasant customer by a small business/​coffee shop owner. It was almost agressive.
Will tell all my friends not to go

I found this place when I went to see the Toronto Ukrainian Festival in Bloor west village.
The coffee is not bad a little too strong for people who are used to Tims. The place is quite nice but very small as they have very few seats. Seems to me the concept is to take the drink and leave. The staff is very friendly and does funky designs on the lattes.
All in all its a decent little espresso bar which we need more in Toronto!

Good: Cute little place, nice art, decent washrooms, coffee is good, baristas are friendly. Coffee is normal price for Indie coffee shops.
Not so bad, not so good: Had the Americano. It was «meh». Didn’t have a strong coffee flavour.
Bad: Cash only, only 2 – 3 tables.
Verdict: Next time I have more cash, I’ll drop by to see how their lattes are, but this place is so quiet, I really like it. Great escape from hustle and bustle.

The staff person was very nice, but the coffee here is watery and extremely overpriced ($ 3.25 for a badly made americano). The baked goods were sitting out on the counter, uncovered, in a mess of the half-​caked on baking pans they’d been made in. I wouldn’t care about that stuff if the price was right, but if you’re going to charge that much for drinks, the quality of your product and presentation should be a lot better.

The first of many coffee spots on the indie coffee passport, this place definitely is an interesting twist to what a coffee pub should be all about. Personally, whenever I think of a coffee place I always think a place with big comfy chairs, big tables and somewhere to really relax, unwind and enjoy a nice cup of coffee. Wibke’s takes a twist and feels more like a renovated studio apartment and some interesting furniture designs.
Ambiance
As mentioned above, Wibke’s is totally different then what you’d expect from a coffee pub and that can either be a good thing or a bad thing. In my perticular context, I had just ridden 110 km from Waterloo to Toronto…
So I was looking for the ordinary, comfy place…:P
I would think this would be a great place to take a girl out for a quick espresso hit before going out on the town or something, but I didn’t feel all too comfortable there and wouldn’t imagine this being a great place to take a girl out and having a super long conversation (that’s my feeling atleast).

It’s more of a hipster place then anything and very minimalistic.

I choose to do this one last because I wanted to provide some optimism in my review in the beginning. I’ll be honest: I was quite frustrated with the fact they DON’T accept debit or visa so be warned. The espresso was definitely sharp (good plus) and the treats looked tasty (vegan mostly)…I had to settle with my last remaining cliff bar: P

Question is, would I go back there again? If i was to hangout for a few minutes with friends or have a super casual meeting with a girl: definitely. I suppose this is one of the places that is totally in this hipster scene so i’ll give ‘em that.

I tried Wibke’s on a visit using my Indie Coffee Passport.
There are no prices listed on the chalkboard, so I didn’t know what to order to keep my drink below $ 4. I usually get a latte and the barista said that was ok, but made me pay 75 cents extra for soy milk. I’ve never had to do that at ANY of the places on the Indie Coffee Passport, and I’ve been to about 15 of them now! I asked for a smaller size but the barista said the drinks only come in one size: large.
Great. So I could barely taste the coffee because it was all milk in a giant cup.
I wasn’t impressed and I probably won’t go back. Next time I’m in the area I’ll be going to Coffee Tree where I can get my drink in a more manageable size.

The best cappuccino in Toronto hands down! Excellent service!
I will go out of my way just buy coffee at Wibke’s!
If you like good european coffee, this is the ONLY café i would recommend in TO!

As an espresso snob, I’ve been waiting for a great espresso bar to open in Bloor West Village so I don’t have to make the trek to Crema in the Junction. So I was super-​excited when Wibke’s opened just around the corner from my house. I haven’t tried Wibke’s espresso yet but her lattes are good-​to-​great.
Her baked goods are amazing. It’s a rare week that I can survive without one of her airy croissants. The croissant’s are so good I haven’t ventured to try her other goodies which look amazing (especially the various loafs).
As others have mentioned, the small size of the espresso bar and the friendly owner create a great neighborly atmosphere.

Teeny tiny spaces doesn’t make me claustrophobic but it does make me more aware.
I’m the kind that like to share especially seats to others because I don’t mind standing.
Basically if there were 6 ppl drinking-​in then I would be standing space only.
Not a big issue since most customers seem to be the on-​the-​move non-​Macbook.
We arrived late weekend and notice the 6pm close so don’t be late. 3.5’d
Friendly barista does a good Cappuccino, perfect to seat near the window…
Enjoy watching light drizzle of rain as the rush hour traffic outside takes place.

Went here with a client about a week ago. I was very impressed.
The seating was somewhat limited, but the coffee (espresso and Latte) were amazing. So was the date square!
This welcoming place makes you think of it everytime you walk or drive by. It’s not pretentious at all. I love understated businesses, and this is a great one.
I’ll definately be going back…

Wibke’s Espresso Bar is conveniently located near Jane Subway Station and Moksha Yoga Bloor St West…
Nice cute café. When I walked in I just feel like it is just so white… pine tables, white chairs, white walls. Wibke reminds me of Ikea?!
The barista is so friendly and nice. Making small talks with all the customers.
I used my Indie Coffee Passport for a Cappuccino… The drink was fine… my latte art looked curiously like a cloud? or I need to use more imaginations? a flower? an atomic bomb?
Free WIFI… I having fun checking in and thinking where to go next using my Unilocal App. while my Friend wondering why I made him walked all the way here!

This café is located way on the west end of TO.
The setup is nice clean and functional. The Barista was busy baking the goodies when I walked in.
I went for my cappuccino and asked that it be with a sweetener.
The barista took her time making my drink which is highly appreciated. Meanwhile there was a steady flow of customers who seemed to be regulars here.
The cappuccino looked decent (OK attempt at latte art) there was nice crema though the frothing could have been better. Slightly burnt taste on the espresso. Decent drink

New Expresso bar in Bloor West Villiage, across the street from the Humber Cinema. Small place with limited seating, but since it’s near the intersection of Bloor and Streets, it seems to be setup to cater to folks heading to/​from the Jane Subway Station. They just opened and everything looks quite new.
My Americano was good, but this is really a takeout joint.

Toronto has no shortage of cafes and sometimes you think they’re all located downtown. Last weekend, I traveled to Wibke’s at Bloor and Jane, which is located right across the street from the Humber Cinema.
As soon as I stepped through the door, I was greeted by the owner, Wibke. She is lovely and very friendly. I had planned to stay there for a few minutes, maybe even read my book, but I ended up chatting with her and her friend about our day and learning the fundamentals of Twitter for a while. I could tell from stepping through her front door that the level of comfort and friendliness is turned up to high; everyone that visits is greeted like an old friend.
The décor is simple and clean. All of the seating is located in the front. There’s two stools at the bar and three tables with chairs and a bench that runs across the window. Currently, there’s a series of Holga photography about urban exploration hanging on the wall.
It was a particularly warm day and I cooled down with a large iced latte. I kept my blood sugar levelled by eating one of her gluten-​free cranberry granola bars. All of her baked goods are made by her and they’re damn delicious. I missed out on her banana bread and croissants; these are her hot commodities.
The café is a little bit out of my way but it was well-​worth the trip. It brought me to a neighbourhood I hardly ever think to visit. Given that there’s a Coffee Time nearby, I hope more people, both area locals and visitors from other parts of the city, will discover this place and support it.
I also overheard Wibke mention that her opening party will be sometime in September, which sounds like a lot of fun!

I enjoyed a soy latte and croissant here. The owner, who is the German namesake, made the croissant herself and it was fabulous.
I actually got into one of those conversations where everyone in the café, all strangers, start talking to each other. It helps that all the seating up front is close together. The vibe is very friendly and welcoming and it was great to hear such a diverse set of perspectives.
I will definitely stop by the next time I’m in the area. The window seats give a nice view of the Humber Cinema, which just recently opened for the first time in 8 years!

Some of the best coffee I’ve had (and certainly better than anything else nearby.) She also has some excellent homemade baked treats. Excellent and friendly service! Highly recommended.

Dropped by this afternoon after seeing Wibke’s on Unilocal.
There’s not a lot of smaller coffee shops in the area (being stuck with Coffee Time, Timothy’s, and the terrible service at Coffee Tree), so Wibke’s is a welcomed addition.
I’ll start by saying the service is friendly and welcoming. The interior of the shop was ho-​hum, but very clean and well kept. I hope people actual take note of the coffee house, because it’s a bit out of view from Jane Station.
The drip coffee I had was great, very bold, but flavourful. Prices are reasonable, and there were fresh baked pastries as well, although I did not try them.
I look forward to stopping by again in the coming days on my walks around the neighborhood. Good coffee and service goes a long ways, so I hope people start flocking to this place.

The absolute BEST Cappuccino, Latte, Tea and Smoothies in Toronto! Delicious treats! Warm, friendly, knowledgeable service! All in all, Wibke’s is a wonderful addition to the neighbourhood! Woohoo! Found my coffee spot! :D
