In the courtyard of the Woodwards complex, and beneath slabs and slabs of concrete lives the Fei and Milton Wong theatre. With balcony and floor seating, this intimate stage is leap years ahead of the Contemporary Art’s faculty which was once located in portables on the SFU Burnaby campus. The space is brand new with a sterile feel, fitting for the school I spent so much time at. Each show will bring something different to space, there’s no doubt. I enjoyed the Bah Humbug performance that humourously highlighted parallels between Victorian England and the DTES. And while there are no food and drinks signs outside the theatre, coffees and noisy snacks were being passed about before this show. But all quietened when the lights went down. In such an intimate space, it’s tough to make any movements for fear of interrupting the actors. But you won’t have to worry about your mobile phone going off… true to SFU form, it’s in such a bunker that a signal is impossible to find. The only downside is the online booking system which feels archaic for a facility that’s so new. The hours are hours off and it assigns seats automatically, although there is no seat assignment.
