The Frederic Wood Theatre is Theatre at UBC’s primary performance venue on the UBC Vancouver campus.

Theatre at UBC is recognised as one of Canada’s foremost academic Theatre programs. Located on the spectacular UBC campus in Vancouver, British Columbia, we offer a comprehensive range of degrees in the study of Theatre and the opportunity to learn in an interdisciplinary environment combining Film, Creative Writing, Music, Digital Media and other university disciplines.

Historique

Fondé en 1952.

The original Frederic Wood Theatre, a converted military hut, was opened in December 1952. The UBC Theatre Department was created in 1958 and soon outgrew the small structure. Founding Department Head Dorothy Somerset spearheaded the construction of the current 400-seat theatre which opened in 1963.

We’ve been subscribers to the Theatre programme for years. The spaces they use – the Freddie Wood, Telus & Dorothy Somerset are good theatre spaces. We do enjoy most of the performances, but the quality is erratic… not a surprise for a student theatre programme, I suppose. This past year, we switched to Friday nights, which has enhanced our experience considerably. We used to get irritated at the audience because it would giggle inappropriately. It turns out that weekday nights are student nights. By switching to Fridays, we got a more mature audience. It makes all the difference in the world.

Great space. Intimate too. The way the theatre is built really allows the performers to project — and you can hear the voices clearly from any seat.
Given that it’s an older and smaller theatre, ticket prices are reasonable. The two plays I’ve been to see so far were excellent: A Thousand Cranes, and shortly thereafter, a Memory, a Monologue, a Rant, and a Prayer. The acting was also excellent… but then again, that doesn’t have anything to do with the theatre.
The experience would be even more enjoyable if they offered more services like a coat check, so people wouldn’t have to sit on their coats (no place to put them!).

This is a small theatre by most standards. It is cozy and intimate. It is smaller than the Vancouver Playhouse.
This is a no frills theatre. The productions that I’ve seen were very good, but in terms of service, they have minimal refreshments, if you compare it to larger theatres. The box office is not really a box office, it is more of a will call set up.
I’ve come here for several productions, such as Moliere, and Oscar Wilde plays and Dangerous Liasons for which I don’t know how many times I’ve seen live. I can’t seem to get enough of it. Maybe it’s b/c of that damned French Lit course I took when I was a student. =)

I really like this theatre, because no matter what seat you get, you can still see the play really well. I’ve been coming here since I was 8! Well… when I was 8, I remember going on a school field trip to watch a play of Snow White and I didn’t REALLY remember where it was except that it was at UBC, until… I stepped foot into Freddie Wood again a few years ago! All the memories came back – watching the play, and hanging out at the steps of the UBC bookstore.
Anyway, I digress. I was just here last week for the premier showing of Wild Honey by Anton Chechkov/Michael Frayne for UBC Alumni. Great sound and set up for a play. And it’s a good theater with lower priced tickets, as most productions are put on by students. No complaints here!
