A bit salty today, but still pretty good. Hits the spot.

I’ve been having a butter chicken craving the past few days and so I was looking for something cheap and tasty near my office. I was reading through various reviews and noticed that there was an overall consensus that fast Indian food usually would have small curry portions with a price tag approximately $ 9+. So when I saw reviews of Ground For Appeal being good value AND tasty, I just had to try it. This is definitely a hidden gem. I ordered a butter chicken and it came with not only rice but also 4 pieces of naan and a big bowl of butter chicken. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick lunch and craving some awesome butter chicken for less than 9 dollars! Great value and great tasting!

I’d be interested in a report studying the relationship between those who buy their lunches at Ground for Appeal, and those that have ever had a decent curry; my presumption is that it would be inverse. What is to like about this place? I genuinely don’t get it. The butter chicken is comprised of a canned tomato soup, a ladle of cream, some Indian spice with a few chunks of dry chicken breast. The dahl, easily the cheapest thing to cook in an Indian restaurant, was 20% lentils, 80% shitty creamy sauce. The ‘naan’ bread is just thin white bread, more akin to a greek pita than an Indian flatbread. Even the rice was a clumpy overcooked mess.

Just ordered butter chicken and lamb curry. It came as 2 orders. Hardly any chicken, tasted like tomato soup had been added. Just loads of rice and naan for $ 17 and just the sauce left. Urban fare does a better lamb curry and it is a decent portion. In the UK you can have much better Indian food in any supermarket.

Grounds for Appeal is awesome — if you don’t get there between 12 and 1PM. I try and leave work at 11:50 to avoid the insane line-up that only disappears around 1PM. It’s really hard to try new things when their butter chicken is so mouth-wateringly delicious. The butter chicken is creamy, saucy, delicious. They don’t skimp on chicken pieces either. I have to say, this is probably my favourite butter chicken in Vancouver so far. I think I have close to 40 check-ins now… and about 90% of those involved me eating butter chicken. I know I ate the palak paneer last time which was also awesome. For about $ 8 you get a decent sized meal — 4 slices of naan bread, a helping of rice and a(what seems small) bowl of butter chicken. I usually eat about half of this and take the rest home for dinner. If you don’t eat much they allow you to order a half order for a few dollars cheaper. They have lots of other goodies aside from some Indian dishes, they serve coffee, baked goods, salads and sandwiches. This is not really a restaurant, more like a cafeteria setting(it is located in a law building). The seats and tables aren’t fancy or anything, and essentially you line up, order your food, it gets served to you on a tray and you’re on your way.

So I heard so much about the butter chicken… and honestly… it’s good. but that’s about it… by the time I got there(3 o’clock) they already had no rice left… they did offer me twice the naan but it turned out that the naan was really not delicious… Crave India has the best naan and butter chicken I’ve had so far…

I work just down the street from this place and eat here probably 3 – 5 times a month. If you’re looking for something really tasty and intensely filling for under $ 10 at lunch time you can’t do much better than Grounds for Appeal, the unassuming café in the Law Society building that makes great curry and a solid chai. Personally, I don’t care for the Butter Chicken(always find it on the dry side) but almost exclusively get the meat special of the day which usually cycles between badami chicken korma, tikka masala and karahi chicken and combo it with one of the two vegetable specials of the day. Every curry comes with a generous portion of rice and a piece of naan making the combo’s easily stretch to two meals depending on your appetite. Portion aside the curry is consistently delicious and rich, just a nice touch of spiciness. I really recommend you give it a shot or at least the chai. Feels hard to get a chai that isn’t some kind of chai latte meaning there’s a ton of milk in it.

Best butter chicken I’ve ever had. Don’t be fooled by the randomness of the building and interior. SOGOOD. Also tried the Masala chai recently which is delicious.

Absolutely delicious butter chicken — and great value for the price(rare to find downtown!) Doesn’t look like much of a building but it assuredly delicious food(at least the curries, I’ve never tried the sandwiches and other offerings). Line can look daunting around lunch hour but it goes quick and the food is worth the wait.

My favourite new place downtown to eat butter chicken. Amazing butter chicken but the bread needs to be naan. To me, its more like a pita bread than naan. Other than that, the service is quick even with long lines. The portion size is perfect and price is just right $ 8 for butter chicken, rice and bread.

An excellent hidden gem offering authentic and delicious Indian delights in the downtown area for more than reasonable prices. My friend introduced me to this place very reluctantly. I didn’t understand why at first, but after my first visit, I could totally understand why. This place is that secret you want to hold close to your heart because you know that once the cat is out of the bag, nothing will ever be the same again. It’s like that restaurant you love and don’t want anyone else to know about because it means the possibility of less food and longer line ups for you! The Butter Chicken lunch special is the best! THEBEST! $ 7.95 for hard-core yummy Butter Chicken, included are generous portions of rice pilaf and roti. The curry and lentils are pretty decent too, but I’m really all about the Butter Chicken, and the fact I didn’t have to pay $ 10+ still shocks me every time I go.

I can’t get over this place! Curry AND coffee all from the same location? It’s like I’ve died and gone to heaven: D For once, it’s a place where I’ve yet to try the coffee. Work mates took me here, and I now insist we visit every week! I’ve so far had the chicken curry and aloo gobi, all of which comes with rice AND naan bread, for around $ 8 max! This is crazy good, and tastes delicious! Next up with be the butter chicken and dal, and I will have to try a mango lassi: D So exciting!

I’ve been searching high and low for the location of Grounds of Appeal, and finally with a little help from Raza M. I found it. It’s so dumb, all of this time I kept walking around the block to find it. Well, to set the record straight, it’s right inside the Law Society of BC building. Right there in front of my eyes! Today I went with the reviews and ordered butter chicken. The paper bowl/plate and plastic cutlery threw me off a bit but the curry, naan and rice was good. There is no doubt they know how to make authentic curry. I didn’t expect to be full but boy was it filling. Curry and carbs does send me into a 2pm food coma… aahh. $ 7.95 for a quick Indian lunch? A-OK. PS: It really doesn’t matter what kind of a review I write for them, I don’t think. The lunch time queue was consistently 10 to 15 persons long.

What do you get when you combine lawyers, Yaletown hipsters and curry, and throw them together in a coffee shop? Grounds for Appeal, apparently! Located on the ground floor of the Law Society of BC(LSBC) building, you’ll find yourself confused when you first walk in by the smell of curry, which I for one do not typically expect in a coffee shop. But alongside delicious lattes, they offer about 7 types of curry per day. The décor is decidedly 90s, but the space is very large and open and there are an impressive number of tables for casual meetings or working lunches. The biggest surprise for me was that it wasn’t just full of lawyers in the building for LSBC business; the place is also patronized by people working in the neighbourhood and even Yaletown moms with their strollers. The staff are very nice and friendly and don’t seem to mind the influx of stressed out students taking classes upstairs.

This place had been around the block all this time, I just never stepped in, until now. A friend from office suggested the place, and we went across the street. The place is bigger and spacious than I thought it would be. I went there expecting something else but the aroma of spice made me order Indian food. I think it was pretty much lunch time, but they were already out of vegetable curry. Anyways, I had to settle for a tuna sandwich, which was OK at best. But my friends lamb curry looked delicious and was served more like how it would have been served back home. They also have decent options for satisfy your sweet tooth. The prices are decent too. My first overall experience was more like 3 and half stars.

Great food considering the price and lots of different choices. The indian dishes are awesome and I haven’t been disappointed with any other menu items. The family running the place is very nice too.

I work in the building this café is in so i’ve been here plenty of times. If your not a vegetarian you gots lots of options, but if you are, unfortunately your choices are limited. My preference is the Indian cuisine, the palak paneer is super filling and I hear the butter chicken is amazing.

Ok, this place doesn’t look to appealing, it’s kind of hidden and you’d think they only serve decent coffee. But no! they hace AWESOME butter chicken, chicken curry, lamb curry and vege curries. The curries Ébutter chicken comes with rice and naan bread and you can get different combos :) I’m no Indian food expert, but this food tastes homemade and it’s cheap too! how couldyou resist! hehehe!
