Historique

Fondé en 1967.

The business started in 1967 by Joseph Iorio in Montréal and then moved to Vancouver in 1970. Mr. Iorio remains the owner and manager of operations.

J&M’s coin department buys and sells retail and wholesale worldwide, with clients across Canada, the USA, and Europe. They are authorized agents of the Royal Canadian Mint, The Perth Mint (Australia), and the Lasqueti Mint and are also well known dealers in precious metals (gold, silver, platinum), and foreign currency exchange. J&M’s jewellery department offers the largest selection of quality fine jewellery at our 8,500 square foot showroom on Broadway and at our newly relocated branch at Metrotown Centre. J&M offers the most complete line of jewellery services, including: quality custom design and repairs with workshops at both locations, appraisals, estate jewellery — and the guaranteed every-day lowest price. We even provide online auctions for coins, jewellery and collectibles at auctions.jandm.com. We have two locations.

Been going to J & M once in awhile since they had moved from their more modest location down the street. Great prices on coin collecting supplies and reasonable prices on their huge inventory of world, CDN and US coins.
You must understand that this is not one of those tiny, dusty old coin store but more like an huge emporium that deals with 10’s of thousands worth of transactions daily. It’s true that each of their staff have different personalities, but once you click with one, stick with that one if you want great service. Introduce yourself to staff and they’ll remember your name and treat you well. Nathan is awesome. I just like the fact they constantly get new coins coming in and they’re fair at buying and selling. I may not buy anything every time I go browse but nobody ever bothers me.
They have free underground parking at back and great foreign exchange rates too.
They’re cheaper than buying on EBay and you don’t need to pay shipping.

Iorio Jewellers at J & M have designed and made many items for me over the years. Crystal Worlsey has been the key employee in ensuring that my work was completed to my satisfaction and has been extremely helpful in assisting with design options. Most recently, I requested appraisals on the items that I’ve purchased from J & M; each item was described in detail with an accompanying photograph done by Crystal. I highly recommend her services to anyone wanting custom design pieces and will continue to consult with her on any future design projects.

I have been to this establishment to have my wristwatch band replaced, and also to sell coins and silver. I had a short wait before being served and could not call our negotiations speedy — but as another reviewer pointed out, this is not a grocery express line. I was treated with courtesy and respect and was very happy with my transactions.
I have noticed that many young people today expect service people to be excessively cheerful and overly friendly. Servers in restaurants are trained to be this way. You have to tell them how your day is going and reassure them every 10 minutes that your meal is fantastic. I mention this because I think it helps to explain the multitude of bad reviews on Unilocal — which to my mind are often unwarranted.
J & M provide courteous, reliable and professional service, which to me is more important than lightning quick servitude — which perhaps the Queen of England should receive.

The customer service was really awful. They took forever and a day to verify information for the bank draft that we had brought along with the biz card of the bank manager. Not sure why they even needed to do that as its a bank draft, but they really took a lot of time. The girl who waited on us was new, as she kept telling us, but she literally had no idea what she was doing. Why don’t they train their staff? She took 20 min doing something with the bank draft, and then had to ask 2 other men for other information. Eventually she took us to the cage to gather our silver coins, but she then had a 10 min chat with the woman in the cage in a different language, which irked me because it was right in front of me which was rude, and it was taking up my time when she should’ve been getting our silver. They then dithered around for quite a while as they weren’t sure if they had enough tubes in the cage or should they go into the vault. We only needed a dozen tubes of maple leafs, so it should not have been a problem, and why did they not know what they have on hand? Scary. I would never go back to this place. The only good thing I can say about it is that they will carry your bullion to your car for you if its heavy. Otherwise, I’d go to the Vancouver Bullion Xchange as its much faster and on point. Save yourself the aggravation. Its not worth it.

This place has the most terrible service. My husband and I went in to get a quote to have a custom pendant made. The first sales rep, asked us if she can help with anything, I showed her my stone that I wanted to have set in a pendant, right away, she said «no we don’t buy from outsiders, we only sell our diamonds». I said” no, I’m not trying to sell anything, I’d like my stone put into a custom made pendant, do you do this”. She again said rudely «no we don’t «. We were stumped by her bad attitude. We thought she may of not understood what we were wanting, so we decided to ask another sales rep. We walked around, and no one approached us, I over heared another sales rep dealing with a customer who was getting a custom piece done, so we decided to wait for her. Several minutes went by, she popped her head up and said that she would be a long while and called another sales rep over to help us. This sales rep came over but was not pleased to have to get up from his desk to help us, he was rolling his eyes as he was getting up from desk. We told him what we wanted, he did a drawing and excused himself with the drawing and stone, told us he had to ask another rep, how long it would take and cost. He came back and said he could not guarantee, that the stone would not be damaged while putting it in a setting for a pendant… I asked what do you mean it may be damaged and damaged how. He replied «it may chip or crack». We were shocked to hear that. Ok this is not something you want to hear. This place is NOT PROFESSIONALS at all. So beware when you have anything done, you may have a really nice stone, than have them reck it !!

With all the respect for other reviewers, I’d like to say that someone who complains about J&M it’s not fully aware how this kind of business operates. First, I need to say that I’m not an employee or a member of family of any of the employees at J&M.
Now, short explanation for people who with word «rude» describe any service or behavior that is not according to their expectation. I would like to remind you that buying or selling gold, silver, collectible coins etc., is not the same as buying shoes or groceries.
It takes time, concentration, very often negotiation, and cannot be rushed. I remember times in the past that I had to wait a little bit, but as I said, buying coins is a different experience than getting buns for breakfast and for me it was even a pleasure to walk around the store and appreciate the collection they have there. For people who do not have that passion, I suggest on-line purchases, where you do not have to wait or talk to someone.

After being buzzed into this glorified pawn shop, I stood there at the counter for a long while, no one (4 guys) even acknowledged me with a, «hi be with you in a minute».
Finally one of the coin guys looked at my coins, said he didn’t know much about US coins but knew enough to offer to buy all mine at lower than melt value (some of them more valuable dates and stamps, defiantly not all equal in value).
Rudely told me to take off my hat, didn’t let me talk, interrupted me a few times, know it all attitude. He treated me like a 2^nd class citizen although that’s not how I dressed or looked. He was arrogant and had poor customer service skills. He was basically a doucebag. I would highly recommend to avoid this place they don’t care about customers and it shows. They have a weekly newspaper for pricing he used to look up the value, really, how current of you. Offering less than melt value for walking liberty 90% silver coins in fine to very good condition, why would anyone sell? More importantly why does this idiot get to keep his job? There are lots of nice knowledgeable people who work hard to promote their businesses not themselves, and he gets to work there? Sucks to be the rest of them if they have to work with him. There are lots of places to do business this is not one of them. I left feeling like crap, I didn’t really need to sell my coins and glad I didn’t sell them to him.

Not just bad, actually criminal — I took in a gold chain to sell for scrap, the lady there told me is was 4 grams less than it actually was — glad I weighed it before I took it in! When I pointed that out to her she mumbled something about her coworker making a mistake — but she’s the one who had weighed it behind the counter. Beware!

I am extremely pleased with J & M’s jewellery repair department.
I had a wide white 18k brushed band ring that I needed to be sized down. I was very concerned that there would be a visible seam upon completion. Not only did they make the joint invisible, but the repair was completed sooner than promised and for a very nominal charge.
The store is always busy, but the few times I was in there I received fairly prompt and polite service.

Due to a recommendation by a Unilocal member, I took my mothers silver broach into J&M to have it converted to a pendant.
After choosing a silver chain I was amazed at the match!
Conversion of broach to pendant+silver chain = $ 60.00 I can’t relate to the negative reviews — I found the customer service great.

I wish I could give these guys less than one star. Should have read the reviews before driving down there. I called first, asking about silver coin prices, and was quickly dismissed on the phone, telling me just to come down and they could help me. When I got there however, after being ignored for at least 5 minutes, I finally asked someone who wasnt at all busy for some help. Was passed off to another person, who told me to hang on, then walked away and made a phone call Waiting for the guy to get off the phone, (over 5 mins, i timed) — I asked the first again for some help. This man was perhaps the rudest person I have dealt with in customer service in Years. Do yourself a favour and steer clear of this place. I wouldn’t sell to them if they offered me double market value.

I agree with the brutal lack of service here.
I literally waited 10 minutes staring blankly at watches before anyone even looked at me. Yikes.
But, it is a good place to get rid of any scrap gold you may have acquired over the years (broken chains, jewelry from an ex…) And they have pretty good rates for money exchange. However, there is a new fee ($ 2?) for anything under $ 100. Boooo
Just don’t expect a smile, or anything other than a cold shoulder.

Big selection, coins, lots of coin storage goodies, watches, all, according to signage at deep discount prices.
Unfortunately, though they had to buzz me in, somehow they forgot I existed. After talking to someone who said she was in accounting and didn’t know anything about watches, I got no answer to my query about who would. I stood about while the man behind the watch counter chatted pleasantly with a couple, and watched two other employees apparently busying themselves with closing (posted hours say until 6:00 PM, it was about 5:30).
After ten solid minutes of being completely ignored, I left in disgust. I just wanted a watch-bracelet adjustment done, nothing that was going to keep anyone past closing. And I wasn’t dressed up but I don’t look like a bum. If they didn’t want to do business, why let me (or anyone) in to begin with?
