Historique

Fondé en 1999.

In 2009 The Block expanded to add a shoe department in the store. Shoe collections include, Loeffler Randall, N.D.C., Coclico, H by Hudson, Sigerson Morrison, Belle by Sigerson Morrison, A.P.C., Filippa K, Dolce Vita, Generic Surplus, Clae, NoBrand, Rokin and Ken Diamond.

Customer service is mediocre. I put a lady’s coat on hold and they couldn’t find it. It was put back on the floor in the men’s section. They didn’t bother to put it back. The sales staff like to address their 40+ year old customers as «ma’am» in an obsequious manner that borders on comical and insulting.

Don’t get me wrong. I love this store! They have many beautiful things. What I find upsetting is that I can usually find whatever I love in this store online for $ 100-​$ 200 cheaper even with the exchange rate. When I do buy something at this store it is usually on sale and then it is about par with what I can purchase online. The sales staff are lovely and I really want to rate this store higher as I feel the clothing is carefully curated and like no other in the city.

I’ve been coming here since high school. I still can’t bring myself to buy items at full price. Perhaps it’s because of my years living in the states and having access to US prices and sales. Still I love coming here and the sales ladies and the owner never make me feel unwelcomed knowing that I come to check out their sales. Hey, they need people to clear their old inventory too!

The Block carries women’s and men’s clothing that ranges from unique local designers to up and coming international lines. Some lines include, Isabelle Dunlop, LaCoste, Adidas, Seven&Juicy.Fabulous clothes, fantastic space and fun staff make The Block a must stop! I appreciate that this store makes use of there space instead of the empty room looks that most clothing stores in Gastown seem to adopt. Everything is well organized and I appreciate how there is something for everyone in this shop, both men and women. Prices are decent for what they are and the customer service is friendly.

The Block is a lovely place to shop! A nicely curated array of classic brands like APC, Filson, & Loeffler Randall but with a few moderately priced brands like Lifetime Collective and Happy Socks thrown in for good measure.
Camila is wonderful and never rushing for a sale. Tried on a pair of Hudson boots on my way to Old Faithful and ended up falling in love with them. The best part is I was never followed around or asked a series of questions, I was just free to browse. Ideal!

This store is full of incredibly trendy and expensive stuff. I get the feeling when I go in that if I bought anything it would last my entire life. I tried on some really beautiful bags here while my shopping companion fell in love with a pair of $ 400 boots. Incredible shoes really. I would love to shop here on the regular but my pocketbook wouldn’t allow it; I wonder at those who do. I suppose quality over quantity is what grown-​ups go for. (I think I’m a grown-​up sometimes.)
While I was shopping at The Block someone asked me if I worked there. Do I really look that hip? Apparently. I took it as a compliment.

The Block is solid. I can’t recall if I’ve ever actually bought anything there in the many years they’ve been in business, but I’m almost always drawn in by the tastefully styled mannequins in the window along Homer Street. Everything is designer — some local, some international — and a little dear in price, but at least the staff have never made me feel like a butt for fondling the goods while not already dressed to the nines.
The music is great too — a little obscure, as fits the indie-​designer-​high end vibe, but never too oft-​putting for shopping (I’m looking at you, Dream). They’ve got the quality duds. Someday soon, I’m gonna graduate from browsing to buying.

Cool store. Cool stuff. The staff is great. They leave you be and let you shop on your own time without being intrusive. One thing… Get more menswear there. The selection is decent, but could use more!

Beautiful selection. High quality. Very wearable. Kinda of the 1st gastown /​main street look store, way ahead of it’s time. Been shopping here since I was a teenager (well in those days I mostly looked and dreamed of buying!) WIsh I could afford this place all the time. Staff helpfulness varies from awesome to bored/​detached depending on the clerk.

Yeah, yeah. Summery, dreamy Ella Moss and Ulla Johnson dresses that make you want to banish clouds forever. And there are gorgeous A.P.C. and Built By Wendy garments designed to make you swoon. And I do swoon. And yes, it’s pricey, but what Gastown boutique isn’t? The real difference here is that it feels unwelcome. Sales staff are too busy whispering too each other to greet a customer. I like gossip. I like chats. I don’t need to be hounded like I’m at a strip mall Gap. I just want someone to acknowledge that Ive stepped into the store. If you wanna sell me expensive, swoon-​worthy clothes, make me feel like I deserve to spend that money.

I don’t know my way around fashion designers and labels. But I can say that the well-​dressed mannequins in the window have caught my eye more than once.
I finally went in today because of a sale sign pinned to an otherwise unclothed mannequin (quite scandalous). The sale was not too big– just a few racks. Grabbing the fabric on a few items conveyed the feeling of sturdy fabrics and quality stitching. I didn’t get anything today, but I’m sure I’ll be back.

Yet another store in Gastown that challenges my budget with local and international designer wares.
My eyes immediately veered towards the shiny, luxe dresses and gowns and stayed there until I peeled myself away and wandered to the other racks of cute tops, lovely skirts, very well-​fitting trousers and fab footwear. This covers the ladies end of things, and Block also carries classy menswear from a number of top-​end designers.
You will find, amongst others, Ella Moss, Free People, Earnest Sewn, Christopher, Jean Okada, Loomstate, Michael Kors, Nudie, Theory and Seven, along with footwear by Loeffler Randall, Bloch London and Built by Wendy. Jewellery lines from Anna de Courcy, Alex and Chloe and leather bags from Erin Templeton will round out your outfit beautifully!

I must be one of only a few detractors of The Block. It is one of Gastown’s bigger stores and it carries plenty of international and independent labels, but I find it a bit on the pricey side, and I often find that in spite of the racks and racks of selection, there’s no single item that really impresses. There are definitely pieces here that are quite original, but it’s not consistent, so I suppose I have kind of lost my faith in The Block. So, stop in here to check it out, but I’m not confident that this is one of Gastown’s better shops.

One of the first stores to revitalize Gastown, this kid has been around The Block (haha) a few times and then some. Having established itself before newly trendy stores and ateliers, The Block continues to devote itself to local design talent and those that stem from elsewhere, giving each equal emphasis.
The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable. Their interest in clothing and style is so clearly sincere – they seem to get a thrill out of promoting the wares of the exceptional designers they carry in-​store.
